This document discusses the concepts of digitization, media convergence, and copyright law in the context of reflective web media creation. It notes that digitization has allowed media to be converted to digital formats and consumed on various platforms through convergence. This has empowered audiences to participate in media production through activities like uploading photos and remixing content. However, it warns that copyright law still applies and permissions are needed to legally use or build upon others' creative works. Creative Commons licenses provide some options for open use and sharing of content with attribution. In summary, digitization and convergence have changed media landscapes while copyright still protects creators' ownership over their original works.
Creative Commons licenses were designed to help
creators utilize the Internet’s potential as a place
for collaboration without copyright law getting in
the way. Since CC was founded, the possibilities
for creativity on the Internet have expanded
tremendously. CC’s products and community must
continue to grow and transform too.

CC at Social Media Art Camp (SMartCAMP)guest5e12482
I gave a talk yesterday on Creative Commons at Social Media Art Camp (SMartCAMP) which also ustreamed live at http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/5261313. It is ideal for those who are artist creators and/or part of arts organizations/projects/institutions.
This presentation defines remixing, examples, and tools teachers and students can use to remix. It also speaks to copyright, attribution, and Creative Commons.
Slides and audio recording from my presentation at Aalto university Media Lab, concerning copyright, creative commons, remixing, and such. The actual presentation is just over half an hour long - the last slide has 20 minutes of discussions, which may be of interest as well.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2. In the past we have consumed media in analogue forms but we are now in the era of
Digitisation. Digitisation is the process of converting analogue objects into digital format.
Analogue Digital
Digitisation
3. Media convergence is the coming together of different technologies as a result of
digitisation. In Henry Jenkins’ view, it gives us the opportunity to develop new skills, new
ways of transmitting information, new creative genres and new modes to deliver education
to students. He argued that it “is more than simply a technological shift”. Convergence
allows one media product to perform many different tasks.
Media Convergence
4. The internet technology and its Web 2.0 platforms together with digitisation and
convergence have given us the opportunity to participate, consume and produce media in
the virtual world. It transforms the relationship between industries, market and audiences.

Web 2.0 platforms
5. Through transformation and convergence audiences are no longer passive consumers but also
active producers. Out of all these emerge a culture of participatory. We upload photographs onto
Flickr or Instagram (photo sharing sites). We download music, movies, artwork, text, cliparts and
images to remix and mashup. We then upload our newly created piece of work onto social media
website such as SlideShare, Vimeo, or YouTube. How many of us are familiar or even aware of
copyright and individual properties law?
Hello World!
Remix and mashup
6. Downloading and copying other people's work are illegal activities unless permission
is sought and given by the owner. Individual’s work is protected by copyright law
which protects the right to the ownership and economic right driven from the work of
the creator. Infringement on copyright law can get you into a great deal of trouble.

Copyright Law
7. Copyright law is restrictive but necessary for the protection of the artist’s income. However,
it need not stop us from producing creative work to share in the digitisation and
convergence era. Legally usable and sharable materials are available on sites such as:

For example my work here gives permission to re-use, share and build
upon. There are many works such as this one that promotes "Free society”.

8. Knowing where to look for and check the license permission is very
important to avoid copyright infringement. Creative Commons’ web site has
information on types of licenses under which the owner of the work has
waved certain rights to their works.
