2. Relation between the music and visuals
There are three ways that visuals are used to promote a song:
Illustrate – Music videos that use certain images & camera shots to
illustrate/explain the meaning of both the lyrics and the genre.
Disjuncture: Music videos that completely ignore the meaning to their songs.
Amplify: Repetition – When Images and camera shots are manipulated and
shown several times throughout the music video and is imprinted into the
audience’s vision.
3. Illustrative Music Video
The source of the song bases everything in the music video. This is presented by
integrating a set of images and camera shots to accompany the lyrics of the song.
Throughout the music video different images and camera shots to illustrate the lyrics
and genre. The song by Owl City is called ‘Fireflies’ and a shot of fire is actually shown in
the video. There is also a shot where the artist presses a switch with the word ‘Magic’
underneath it, this relates to the song because Fireflies do look quite magical and there
is a lyric that says ‘You would not believe your eyes’ which can also relate to magic.

4. Disjunctive Music Video
Disjunctive music videos are videos that have no relation to the song.
Lana Del Rey’s song ‘Video Games’ has a very interesting music video that
includes themes of 1950’s/60&70’s America, however there is no relation
between what the lyrics mean and what is incorporated in the music video. The
fact that she is singing about video games but has camera shots of people
being thrown into pools and on the back motorbikes is completely irrelevant.

5. Amplification Music Video
Amplification in a music video is when repetition is played throughout the music
video.
Pink’s music video ‘Please Don’t Leave Me’ shows many scenes throughout the
video which are simply just repeated, where her partner begins with no injuries to
major injuries all because he was trying to leave her. Also her lyrics are repeated
through the chorus, however they increase in climax as the music video becomes
more climatic which ends up with Pink dying.
