Music video analysis
1.
2. First thoughts:
this music video seems to be set out sort of like a
film in that it has a 30 second intro to bring across the
narrative to the audience. The establishing shot in the
first scene also brings across a film feeling to the
audience. There is ambient sound and no music
playing and is heavily narrative focussed tie-ing in
with performance.
3. Thought Beats:
Throughout the course of the video there is mixture of editing
following the pace of the music and also editing following the
structure of the song/narrative.
For example in the beginning of the video when the song begins
the shots contain the instruments that are playing on the song.
This is to help the viewer distinguish the main instrument and to
help the listener from getting almost confused.
The video is also split up into sections following the structure of
the song For example this song follows a verse-chorus-verse
structure (as do most popular songs) and on the low-key verses
the shots on the screen reflect the music, but on the upbeat
more energetic chorus the lighting becomes more darker and
concert-like, in order to create a sort of festival/arena feel.
5. Narrative and performance:
This song features both of these aspects but favours
performance over a narrative. For example the
narrative is that there is a normal village having a
‘normal’ village get together with cakes and tea but
there is an unusual punch and Judy show, And the
‘crowd’ are very surprised.
The main aspect is the performance of the puppets
playing music in a ‘live venue’ this is the most
prominent focus of the video, as the narrative
revolves around a ‘surprise’ performance.
6. Star Image:
This video is very good to represent the visual
appearance and mannerism that is
associated with a lead singer of a Rock/indie
band and also to distinguish how the other
members of a band feel compared to the
lead singer getting all the ‘lime light’.

7. Examples:
In this video, the lead singer is perceived to be very
reckless and careless which backs up the conventions
that are associated with lead rock singers, he thinks
he is very cool and would be a huge role model to
fans and followers that want to be this type of person.
Evidence
8. As a contrast the band members are perceived to be very
different from conventions that are associated with rock bands
as a whole. Instead they are dressed in smart attire and
performing as if they are in an orchestral environment. This could
be the artist’s way of mocking people that are part of
orchestras and makes the music seem very asynchronous to the
images that are shown on screen.
Evidence:
9. Relation of visuals to song:
This video illustrates the meaning of the song through the use of
the imagery and mise en scene, but also special editing
techniques that relate to the lyrics that are being sung.
MISE EN SCENE
The way this relates to the song is that the time the video is set is
in very early morning, which mirrors the lyrics ‘its 3 in the
morning’.
Another way the mise en scene follows the lyrics are when the
singer sings ‘the mirrors image, tells me its home time’. The shot
that’s in frame is a sequence of the very drunk lead singer
looking into a mirror with blurred distorted effects to show the
visuals relate to the lyrics.
10. Examples of visuals matching lyrics:
‘the mirrors image, tells me its home time’
Relates to the song title in that the
protagonist is shown as being under the
influence of alcohol
‘left you multiple missed calls’
11. Editing techniques:
On shots where the protagonist is on his phone, the messages appear
out of the phone and follow the movement of the phone. This relates
top the song in that the audience can see what the protagonist is
texting. But also gives very smooth and professional looking visuals
and make the video seem more authentic and attractive.
Another way of relating to the visuals, is by editing
to show the hallucinating of the protagonist and
thus relates to the song as it is about being under
the influence.
