Ancient Greece was located in the Balkan Peninsula in Europe, featuring a landscape of mountains, valleys, islands and archipelagos in a temperate climate near the sea. The geography influenced agriculture, commerce and maritime trade, as Greeks obtained fish, seafood and used the sea to communicate and trade between independent city-states called polis located near water, with each polis having its own laws and public spaces. The two main city-states were Athens and Sparta.
