GREECE
Greece, officially the
Hellenic Republic is a
country in Southeast
Europe.According to the
2011 census, Greece's
population is around 11
million. Athens is the
nation's capital and
largest city, its urban
area also including
Piraeus.
Languages
The first concrete evidence of the Greek
language dates back to 15th century BC
During the 19th and 20th centuries there
was a major dispute known as Greek
language question, on whether the official
language of Greece should be the archaic
Katharevousa,, or the Dimotiki. The dispute
was finally resolved in 1976, when Dimotiki
was made the only official variation of the
Greek language.
Greece is today
relatively
homogeneous in
linguistic terms,
with a large
majority of the
native population
using Greek as
their first or only
language
GASTRONOMY
Greek cuisine is an example of the healthy
Mediterranean sea diet. Greek cuisine
incorporates fresh ingredients into a
variety of local dishes such as moussaka,
stifado, Greek salad, spanakopita and
souvlaki. Some dishes can be traced back
to ancient Greece like. Throughout Greece
people often enjoy eating from small
dishes such as meze with various dips such
as tzatziki, grilled octopus and small fish,
feta cheese, dolmades, various pulses,
olives and cheese. Olive oil is added to
almost every dish.

fate, as many of its

the steep cliffs,along the

then flooded millennia ago However, it
is precisely this spectacular setting
that makes Santorini such a
spectacular destination

ancient times. The most
important civilization of

Athens and relives through

formidable edifices.
ATHENAS

enter the eurozone until 2001 and was
not able to start minting coins as early
as the other eleven member states.
COIN
GREECE COINS BEFORE EURO
The history of Ancient Greek coinage can be
divided into three periods, the Archaic, the
Classical, and the Hellenistic. The Archaic period
extends from the introduction of coinage to the
Greek world in about 600 BC until the Persian
Wars in about 480 BC. The Classical period then
began, and lasted until the conquests of
Alexander the Great in about 330 BC, which
began the Hellenistic period, extending until the
Roman absorption of the Greek world in the 1st
century BC.
RELIGION
Among religions in Greece, the largest
denomination is the Greek Orthodox Church
and Christianity, which represents the majority
of the population and which is constitutionally
recognised as the "prevailing religion" of
Greece. Other major religions include
Catholicism, Hellenic Neopaganism,
Protestantism and Islam.
FLAG
The flag of Greece is recognized by
Greece as one of its national symbols, is
based on nine equal horizontal stripes of
blue alternating with white.
