Geography shaped the development of civilization in ancient Greece. The mountainous landscape and isolation of Greek city-states due to surrounding seas led them to develop individually with unique customs and beliefs, resulting in conflicts. Farming was difficult with rocky soil and scarce water, so terracing and crops like grapes, olives, and livestock were important. As the best farmland was limited, Greek cities established colonies abroad and trade by sea grew to supply needed resources, spreading Greek culture.
