THE IMPORTANCE OF science fiction (SF)
in our time is on the increase. First, there
are strong indications that its popularity
in the leading industrial nations (USA,
USSR, UK, Japan) has risen sharply over
the last 100 years, regardless of local and
short-range fluctuations. SF has particu-
larly affected some key strata of modern
society such as the college graduates,
young writers, and general readers ap-
preciative of new sets of values. This is
a significant cultural effect which goes
beyond any merely quantitative census.
Second, if one takes as differentiae of SF
either radically different figures (drama-
tis personae) or a radically different con-
text of the story, it will be found to have
an interesting and close kinship with
other literary sub-genres, which flour-
ished at different times and places of lit-
erary history: the Greek and Hellenistic
"blessed island' stories, the "fabulous voy-
age" from Antiquity on, the Renaissance
and Baroque "utopia" and "planetary
novel," the Enlightenment "state (politi-
cal) novel," the modern "anticipation,"
"anti-utopia," etc. Moreover, although
SF shares with myth, fantasy, fairy tale
and pastoral an opposition to naturalistic
or empiricist literary genres, it differs
very significantly in approach and social
function from such adjoining non-natu-
ralistic or meta-empirical genres. Both of
these complementary aspects, the socio-
logical and the methodological, are being
vigorously debated among writers and
critics in several countries; both testify
to the relevance of this genre and the
need of scholarly discussion too.
In the following paper I shall argue for
a definition of SF as the literature of cog-

Philology is the aggregate of those practices by which we exploit the linguistic record to engage culture perspectives that are distant from us in time, space, and/or perspective. Whether we are exploiting post-colonial theory, corpus linguistics, or some aspect of the cognitive and brain sciences, we are practicing philology. In the 21st century, we confront the challenge of managing interactions across boundaries of space, language, and culture that are unprecedented in speed and complexity, which each point on the globe now able to interact with any other point in real time. We must think in terms of a World Literature – as Goethe suggested almost two centuries ago – and to do so we must articulate a new philology, one that exploits every possibility of new digital media. Ultimately, we need to establish a sustainable set of evolving cultures – a dynamic Global Culture that provides a voice for many different cultures within it. The field of Altertumswissenschaft has an opportunity to play a fundamental role in this larger process but realizing that opportunity requires a reexamination of what we do, why we do it and for whom.

Abstract
This article reexamines a series of Antonine mythologi-
cal group portraits frequently identified as imperial com-
missions. Drawing on new archaeological evidence as well
as sources for their findspots and restoration histories, I
argue that they were private portraits suitable for the com-
memoration of married couples in house and tomb. The
sculptures juxtaposed idealized divine bodies based on
Greek statue types of Ares and Aphrodite with descriptive
portrait heads of Antonine elite couples. In so doing, they
offered patrons an unusual yet compelling means by which
to represent the affective qualities of Roman marriage
through reference to Greek myth and art. My analysis of
the monumental groups in Mars-Venus format comple-
ments recent scholarship on single-figure mythological
portraits to offer a fuller picture of the transformation of
classical Greek imagery in Roman private art.*
INTRODUCTION
Sculpted groups of Roman couples in the guise of
Mars and Venus offer a rare but illuminating example
of the use of monumental mythological portraiture
for the representation of married love (fig. I).1 The
groups, which date to the Antonine period, juxtaposed
idealized divine bodies based on Greek statue types
with descriptive portrait heads of Roman couples. In
this way, the sculptures used allusions to classical art
and Greek myths of Ares and Aphrodite in order to
celebrate the conjugal affection of husband and wife.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

scenes and sources. Whereas some articles try to make sense of a particular film
(Fernando Lillo Redonet on Rudolph Maté’s The 300 Spartans, and both Ivana
Petrovic and Angelos Chaniotis on Oliver Stone’s Alexander) or engage with an
artistic œuvre (Filippo Carlà discussing the work of Pier Paolo Pasolini), others
undertake a more systematic exploration of an ancient theme throughout the his-
tory of film (Eleonora Cavallini on Phryne, Anja Wieber on Alexander the Great,
Herbert Verreth on Odysseus, B. on Damon and Pythias), or focus on a cinematic
genre (Martin Lindner on children’s animated films, Luigi Spina on the ‘peplum’,
Pantelis Michelakis on silent cinema). Nacho Garcia’s article on classical scener-
ies and G.M.’s piece on Greeks in Roman films complete the list. Oliver Stone’s
Alexander appears in three of the essays, but the perspectives are complementary.
It also testifies to the academic freshness of the topic and the historical importance
that is nowadays granted to this film. Not only has this epic war movie, along
with Zack Snyder’s 300, made Greek antiquity much more attractive for popular
cinema than before, but there has also been no precedent to Stone’s biopic in the
history of classical cinematic receptions in terms of historiographical support and
how this support has been publicly displayed. Oxford professor Robin Lane Fox,
who was Stone’s official historical adviser and authored a well received ‘making
of’, wrote the preface to this volume. The Editors made one general bibliography
at the end of the book; it is regrettable that they did not include a filmography.
One particular virtue of this collection is that, even though it has a great variety
of perspectives without much of a guiding conceptual framework, the authors all
share the idea that films engaged with depictions of Greece do not need to be
historically correct. One could say that they all follow the lead of Oliver Stone
arguing about his Alexander: ‘This is not a documentary. It is a dramatisation’
(p. 201). Though this idea is taken for granted by most contributors, it could have
been addressed somewhat more profoundly. It is worth noting that, in contrast to
Stone’s dictum, the truth value of documentary representations has more than once
been contested, not only theoretically or poetically (they are always ‘dramatisa-
tions’ too) but also from an ideological point of view. Recall, for instance, Chris
Marker’s documentary on Greek culture The Owl’s Legacy (1989), produced for
Greek television but surpressed for being too harsh on Greek identity. The film is
still kept away from both broadcasting and distribution by the Greek government.
It is a pity that such cases remain absent from projects like ‘Hellas on Screen’,
all the more so because they offer a means to participate in public debate and to
show how such questions may intersect with academic research. This obviously
requires other specialisms than those offered by a traditional training in classical
scholarship. But from an academic point of view studying the narrative and the
politics of documentary films or engaging with the potential interplay between
fiction and documentary could tell us more about how Hellas has been projected
on screen.
The corpus and the research questions of this volume are mostly traditional,
though this does not necessarily reduce their merits. Most contributors work with
the ideas of the classical tradition (looking for instance at the ‘lineage’ of a theme
from antiquity through to modern times in an evolutionary fashion) rather than
addressing current issues of classical reception studies. This can be clearly shown
by the overall interest in the aesthetic tradition rather than in the institutional his-
tory of a particular film or theme. Not unsurprisingly, most authors apply methods
from classical scholarship to their case studies and give little attention to methodo-
