Eco City Development towards Developing Low Carbon SocietyMD. SAIDUR RAHMAN
This presentation focuses on eco-city development initiatives in developing countries towards developing low carbon society. Rapid urbanization in developing countries may be the most significant demographic transformation in our century as it restructures national economies and reshapes the lives of billions of people. At the same time, urbanization has also contributed to environmental and socioeconomic challenges, including climate change, pollution, congestion, and the rapid growth of slums. But as a major style of residential environment, city, has been endowed new contents by new ideas ever emerged in the history and eco-city development has emerged as a way to address climate change issues in the context of developing sustainable cities in developing countries. Eco-cities have the potential to address many of the problems like climate change and socio-economic aspects associated with urban development, as does the concept of sustainable development in an urban setting. Drawing on lessons learned from the planning and development process of several low-carbon eco-cities, this paper explores the potential of an integrated urbanism approach for developing countries. The objective is not only to mitigate factors contributing to climate change, but to manage risk, maximize resilience, and promote the successful economic and social growth of the urban eco community in developing countries. An integrated urbanism approach to planning may give us the tools to leapfrog the environmental and public health costs of economic progress and create a new model for cities across the developing world.

Kuala Lumpur Waterfront: A Public Place for All? drboon
As one of the efforts to improve the quality of living environment in the city centre, revitalisation of the Kuala Lumpur waterfront was announced as one of the nine Entry Point Projects in the Economic Transformation Programme. This is an opportunity to revive the public place that used to be a trading post. When the function of the river changes from being the life line for the city to the city’s backyard, the use of this waterfront space was affected. This paper aims to examine the user’s perception on the accessibility of the Kuala Lumpur waterfront. Using the qualitative approach, the focus group technique was employed. The findings suggested that poor access to the waterfront has affected the use of the waterfront. The research inferred the importance to consider public access at the waterfront by future decision makers in reviving this priceless public place for all.
The Importance of Urban Agro-Recreation in the Formation of a Sustainable Int...drboon
Due to present global economic crisis, many people in cities had to lose their jobs or went for early retirement. Thus, productive self-sufficient areas were designed as agro-recreational sites. Integration of the city with its countryside is undertaken as important issue in the formation of urban agro-recreational areas/activities in Gaziantep city. Such urban-rural areas/activities have growing recreational significance for inhabitants of Gaziantep. This made important contribution to local production of fruit and vegetables, reveals present-day leisure pattern of Gaziantep urban agro-recreational activities. The growing demand for such urban-rural activities has recently created business with special focus on agriculture, livestock breeding and local agro-tourism. Therefore, a concept is growing where families, in highly urbanized areas, can experience rural life in first hand, providing leisure activities and support their living with an innovating concept, where urban parks and city fringe areas can be the engines of a self sufficient urban environment.

Raising animals and growing fruits

Land - improves soil structure and protects it against erosion
and nutrient loss by maintaining a permanent soil cover and
minimizing soil disturbance.
Water - requires significantly less water use due to increased
infiltration and enhanced water holding capacity. Mulches also
protect the soil surface from extreme temperatures and greatly
reduce surface evaporation.

16. Introduction
We were given a task to create our own city. Putting ourselves
as the mayor, we will have to rebuilt our city that has been
destroyed.
We had been given various topics such as an Underground City,
an Underwater City, a Floating on Water City, a City in the Air (or
sky scraper city) and On land next to a river or sea.
My group has chose the topic on land next to river or sea. So
we had to design the whole city related to the topic. We had to
do lots of research and planning as we wanted our city to be a
sustainably one.
The main purpose of this project is to allow us students to
explore, differentiate and compare the basic elements such as
natural topography, landscape, space, building and
infrastructure.

17. What makes a city
• The amount of people, population, social issues, activities,
food distribution, culture and religion.
• Having transportation and networking.
• Proper infrastructure, utility, services and amenities.
• Maintaining a sustainable initiative and climate change
consideration and resilience etc.
• Having other services (such as police, army, economy,
security, technology etc)

18. A livable city
• Having efficient public transportation
• Having education, health services, cultural facilities and job
opportunities.
• It should be walkable with large footpaths along its roads.
• It should be totally automobile independent, as all the
major cities of the world such as, London, New York, Tokyo,
Hong Kong and Singapore.
• The roads should be full of taxis and buses with a minimum
of private vehicles. In these cities one does not need a
driving license to survive.
• Great public places where people can congregate.
• Housing for all its citizens.

19. How I came up with the idea of my city
I got inspired by our national flower, the hibiscus.
It reminds us of our love for our country.
It also represents unity that we need to make our
city a peaceful place.

20. Different types of layout of major cities
I used this as a reference to create the layout of my city.
As it has so many different types of layout which gives me
a wider range to design one for my city.
Basically, its a plan or sketch, as of an advertisement or a
page of a newspaper or magazine, indicating the
arrangement and relationship of the parts, as of type and
artwork.
What is a layout?

21. Riveria Oasis
The city was hit by a horrendous tornado. It was the worst
natural disaster ever faced by the citizens there. Not a single
person was prepared to face it.
One fine day, as everyone was doing their daily routine as
usual, the worst thing happened to the citizens there. They
were attacked by a tornado. Everyone was panicking and running
away from it but it was not a success.
Most of the buildings were crushed and buried, nothing was
left. It soon became a deserted island as too much money was
needed to be invested to rebuilt the city all over again.
This was when, I was chosen to become the mayor. After much
thinking, I have decided to redevelop this city as nothing was
impossible to do if we had to desire to do it. I needed to work
very hard and efficient as it had to be designed and build from
scratch.
After all the planning and researches I did, I proudly present
to you, Riveria Oasis. This is where the future begins!

Are owned by the government/

This are where the residents are
staying. All their houses are located
in this area.
All the factories are located in this
section. Its located near the sea as
it needs a lot of water to function
certain machines
All the commercial blocks are placed

All the parks and malls are located here.
For people to hang out and relax
All the vegetables and animals are here.
This is where they plant most of our food.
This is where all the energy is stored.

25. Conclusion
A good city, is a city which is diverse, clean, safe and has a healthy
environment.
What I’ve learnt is that the key features to a successful city is the presence of
nature, clean, attractive public spaces and buildings, walkable city centers and safe
neighbourhoods.
It will also need the participation of everyone if we want the place to be a
successful area.
We also need to remember that cities are not only places for people, but it is
also for tress, plants and animals.
Public transportation also has to be efficient so that all the citizens can reduce
the amount of cars on the road. Which will then improve the air quality
We must also have a proper way to dispose all of our rubbish and not just throw it
at the side of the road. Adding on to that, human or animal waste can be a form of
fertilizers too.
