1.Introduction
According to the project brief, the objective of this project is to let us expose the
elements of the natural and built environments in their basic unit, form and function,
show symbiotic relationships of the elements of the natural and built environment
and also to question, analyse and articulate the impact between natural and built
environment.
In order to create our own town, we have to pretend ourself as a mayor for the
‘X’ town. The issue with the town is citizens that living in the town are too crowded.
Therefore, we have to purpose a layout for ‘X’ town to solve this problem.

2.1 A town is a community consisting of people, businesses, and schools. It is a
small society, sometimes referring to a small city. A town could range in mileage,
whether a large area or small.
2.2 i) The word town shares an origin with the German word Zaun, the Dutch word
tuin, and the Old Norse tun. The German word Zaun comes closest to the original
meaning of the word: a fence of any material. An early borrowing from Celtic
*dunom (cf. Old Irish dun, Welsh din "fortress, fortified place, camp," dinas "city;" In
some cases, "town" is an alternate name for "city" or "village" (especially a larger
village). Sometimes, the word "town" is short for "township". In general, today towns
can be differentiated from townships, villages, or hamlets on the basis of their
economic character, in that most of a town's population will tend to derive their
living from manufacturing industry, commerce, and public services rather than
primary industry such as agriculture or related activities. A place's population size is
not a reliable determinant of urban character. In many areas of the world, as in
India at least until recent times, a large village might contain several times as many
people as a small town. In the United Kingdom, there are historical cities that are far
smaller than the larger towns. Towns often exist as distinct governmental units, with
legally defined borders and some or all of the appurtenances of local government
(e.g., a police force). In the United States these are referred to as "incorporated
towns". In other cases the town lacks its own governance and is said to be
"unincorporated". Note that the existence of an unincorporated town may be
legally set forth through other means, as through zoning districts. In the case of some
planned communities, the town exists legally in the form of covenants on the

properties within the town. The United States Census identifies many census-
designated places (CDPs) by the names of unincorporated towns which lie within
them; however, those CDPs typically include rural and suburban areas and even
surrounding villages and other towns.
ii) Age of towns scheme
Australian geographer Thomas Griffith Taylor proposed a classification of towns
based on their age and pattern of land use. He identified five types of town:-
a) Infantile towns, with no clear zoning
b) Juvenile towns, which have developed an area of shops
c) Adolescent towns, where factories have started to appear
d) Early mature towns, with a separate area of high-class housing
e) Mature towns, with defined industrial, commercial and various types of residential
area
2.3 The size of the local population and whether the location has been
incorporated or has a local seat of government. The size of each varies from one
country or region to another.

3.1 Zhouzhuang in east China's Jiangsu Province.
3.2 In the Spring and Autumn (770 BC-476 BC), Zhouzhuang Suzhou was a part of
the fief Yaocheng and called Zhenfengli. After being donated to Full Fortune
(Quanfu) Temple by Zhou Digong, a very devout Buddist, in 1086 during the
Nouthern Song Dynasty (960-1127), Zhouzhuang got its present name.

4.1 Menaggio, Italy.
4.2 The area of current Menaggio was conquered by the Romans in 196 BC. The
Roman conquest culminated with the construction of a road called the Via Regina.
Menaggio was a walled city. Remnants of the wall are evident today. Construction
of big hotels in this cool summer area made it a summer resort area. Between 1873
and 1939, Menaggio was linked to Porlezza, on Lake Lugano, by the Menaggio–

Porlezza railway, a steam hauled narrow gauge line built as part of a multi-modal
transport link between Menaggio and Luino, on Lake Maggiore.

4.4 Menaggio is a beautiful town with a harbor and there’s beautiful scenary
everywhere. It Is also a best place for bag packers to travel around.

The future of towns and Better Towns
i) Dubai’s Food City
Dubai’s free zone— the Food City, as it was named by the city’s
Chamber of Commerce, has been designed by the creative architects
from GCLA as a self sufficient metropolis. An off-the-grid structure that
doesn’t lack on sustainable features, the future-forward urban quarter is
going to sport vertically stacked green walls and aquatic farms, artificial
roof landscapes, renewable energy and thermal conditioning systems.
An amazing project that brings life to a sandy city, GCLA architects also
thought of integrating features meant to lower energy and water
consumption. Hence why the Food City is going to use concentrated
solar collectors, towers covered in thin-film photovoltaic cells,
piezoelectric pads in pedestrian areas, and methane harvesting through
sewage percolation tanks. It’s also designed to use a set of atmospheric
water harvesting, solar desalination through concentrated solar collectors
and grey water recycling systems to keep water levels under control.

More than half the population of the world now lives in cities, which at
690 million is double the entire US population. In 1980, less than 20% of the
Chinese population lived in cities. In a typically top-down style, the
Chinese government is tackling all of these at once: the biggest polluters
have been moved out of the biggest cities, slum populations have
dropped from 37% to 28% since 2000, and China is in the midst of a
building frenzy. In March, the first 60 families moved into the city’s
residential buildings, all of which are designed to a minimum green
buildings standard, including water-saving sanitary fittings, insulated walls
and double-glazed windows, as well as a south-facing orientation to
optimise passive heat. Parks and green spaces are planned around the
city, and reed beds have been created to attract birdlife and help clean
the water. A green spine, called the “Eco valley” runs through the heart
of the city with cycle routes and a tram. Water provision is one of the
bigger challenges in this naturally arid area. Tap water will be drinkable
and piped in, although the city is planning a possible desalination plant
too. A lot of effort is being put into conserving water and recycling it for
irrigation and toilet flushing. The lakes and water pipes have been lined in
clay or concrete to prevent salt water incursion, and all waste water is
being sent to plant for anaerobic biodigestion,” says Ary de Koning of the
EU-China River Basin Management Programme, who is advising the city
on water issues.

6.2 Spring Ville is a sustainable yet livable town. There will be a lot of residential
area since the problem that we are facing is overcrowded. In addition, we
will also provide ‘green’ transportation to the citizens in order to let them able
to access to everywhere.

7.Conclusion
I have learnt that we have to consider everything before making the first step
because it might affect the outcome at the end. Next, we must do our own part
to save the environment as the earth is being polluted. Then, I have learnt that
sustainability is very important, so we must apply it to every building so that it will
long lasting.
