2. • The nose is an olfactory and respiratory organ.
• It is divided into right and left nasal cavities by nasal septum.
• It consist of nasal skeleton which houses the nasal cavity
• It is extended from the vestibule of the nose to the nasopharynx
4. Functions of the external structurs of the nose
• Nasal bone: it protects arteries and nerves from damage and supports the
septum
• Lateral nasal cartilage: gives form and flexibility within structure
• Greater alar cartilage: it holds the opening nasal nostrils
• nasal spine : forms a cephalometric landmarks
• Pyriform aperture: forms boundary between nasal cavity and posterior
nasal cavity proper
8. • Nose - warms and moistens air
• Palantine bone separates nasal cavity from mouth.
• Cleft palate - Palantine bone does not form correctly, difficulty in swallowing and
speaking.
• Septum - separates right and left nostrils
• rich blood supply = nose bleeds.
• Sinuses - 4 air containing spaces – open or drain into nose - (lowers weight of skull).
