Mulk Raj Anand was an Indo-Anglian writer known for his realistic portrayals of life in his major works such as Untouchable, Coolie, and The Sword and Sickle. As a humanist, Anand was devoted to concerns of mankind and wrote to celebrate life. He showed compassion for underprivileged people in society and brought attention to issues faced by untouchables, such as the exploitation depicted in the stories of Bakha and Sohini as well as caste differences shown through the character of Priest Kalinath.
