What is Philanthropy?
A Greek term which directly translated means "love of mankind." Philanthropy is an idea, event, or action that is done to better humanity and usually involves some sacrifice as opposed to being done for a profit motive.
The most conventional modern definition is "private initiatives, for public good, focusing on quality of life". This combines the social scientific aspect developed in the 20th century with the original humanistic tradition, and serves to contrast philanthropy with business (private initiatives for private good, focusing on material prosperity) and government (public initiatives for public good, focusing on law and order.
Acts of philanthropy include donating money to a charity, volunteering at a local shelter, or raising money to donate to cancer research.

A culture of collaboration emerged. Colonial society was built by volunteers, or voluntary associations focusing on quality of life". They permeated American life, were a distinguishing feature of the American character and culture, and a key to American democracy. Americans, did not rely on others like government,aristocracy, or the church to solve their public problems; rather, they did it themselves, through voluntary associations, which is to say, philanthropy, which was characteristically democratic.
One of the first voluntary associations was also one of the first American governments: the Mayflower Compact of 1620. The Pilgrims declared that they “solemnly and mutually, in the Presence of God and one another, combine ourselves together into a civil Body Politick, for our better Ordering and Preservation.” The first corporation, Harvard College, was a philanthropic voluntary association created to train young men for the clergy.
As was typical in that period, American philanthropic associations had ideological dimensions. Three of the leading English colonies :Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Virginia were styled “Commonwealths”, which meant an ideal society in which all members contributed to the public good.

- 1. Mood Board Task completed by Lewis Pike • In this task I have looked at what we associated America with. Starting with America’s iconic stars, looking at the past and present, which are known globally from musicians such as Elvis Presley and Justin Bieber, to activists such as Martin Luther King and sportsman like Mohammed Ali. In addition, politicians such as Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump and Hollywood superstars. • America is such a vast country with extreme hot temperatures in Death Valley to extreme cold temperatures in the north, such as places like Alaska. The landscape in each state is completely different and has a wide multi-cultural society. • Whilst conducting my research I looked at the ‘Make America Great again’ hat, which Donald Trump used whilst running for President in 2016. The hat became a powerful icon, and reminded the American citizens the change in politics, Mr Trump would bring. His campaign was controversial politics such as a temporary ban on Muslims, I will be using the Trump hat in my production. • America has the most iconic diners, known globally, such as McDonalds, Flanigan’s, Five Guys & TGI Friday’s. I will be including a shot of the typical design of a America diner.
