Music Video Analysis- Michael Jackson, Beat it
The music video I will be analysing is Beat it by Michael Jackson. I will be
focusing on the genre and how this music video is conventional and how it is not
conventional. Michael Jackson in this song didn’t stick to only one genre, in the
song he would jump from genre to genre. The genre he mixed and
matched in this music video was hip hop, pop and
Rock. In the music video when MJ was dancing
throughout the song there were many close ups and
long shots so the audience could clearly see his
performance, this part of the song was part of the
genre pop, as pop music video’s usually include dancing and
with the artist being the main centre of attention. The fact that
some of this music video goes into the rock genre is because a loud
base guitar is heard throughout the song, which is common in rock
music. This music video also falls into the hip-hop genre because
the two groups in the video are in gangs and armed with weapons
such as knifes. Also the clothes are similar to what people wear in
Hip Hop videos.
The reason why I chose this song is because this music videos shows you don’t
have to stick conventionally to one music genre you can mix and match, which
might lead me to do the same when I start to do my own music video.
