MEANING OF DISCREPANICES
ANALYSIS
• Discrepancy analysis is a type of task analysis used to organize
the steps of a task to be taught and to assess instruction by
identifying the discrepancy between how an individual with a
disability performs the task as compared to a nondisabled person.
It is typically used to teach episodic routines and job related skills.
Discrepancy analysis differs from traditional task analysis because
it includes additional performance information.
CONT….
• How well each step of the task was performed (accuracy of step
completion).
• Level of support required to complete each step (cues and prompts) .
• Individual actions that interrupted the task sequence.
• Natural cues in the environment that may help the individual learn the task.
• Natural consequences when the individual fails to complete a step or skips
a step.
• Adaptations for steps that may be more difficult to master.
EXAMPLE EXPLAINING DISCREPANCY
ANALYSIS
• Example of discrepancy analysis needs assessment
questionnaire. comparing current and desired level of
knowledge. For each of the medical areas listed below, please
rank your current level of knowledge and your desired level of
knowledge from 1 to 5, with 1 being the lowest level of
knowledge and 5 being the highest.

ANALYZING DISCREPANCIES IN OD
• A useful model for thinking about diagnosis and intervention
could be termed as discrepancy analysis .
• Examining the discrepancies or gaps between what is
happening and what should be happening , and discrepancies
between where one is and where one wants to be.
• Discrepancies therefore define both problem and goals .
• Discrepancies require study (diagnosis and planning ) and
action to eliminate the gaps .
CONT….
• A good part of OD is problem solving , and hence discrepancy
analysis .
• Action research describes an iterative problem solving process
that is essentially discrepancy analysis linked to action taking.
• Any manager primary task is discrepancy analysis i.e.
1. Study of problems
2. Find/Study the opportunities
3. Study the discrepancy where one wants to be.
