Mean Girls
The openingof Mean Girlsstarts withloudpunk/rockmusicplayingthroughoutthe opening.
Instantly,thisallowsthe audience tounderstandthe genre of thisfilmisachic flicandcomedy.Due
to thisthe relaxingmoodiscreatedandmakesthe audience feelmore relaxedandatease.
Withinthe filmopening,the namesof the directors,actors,producersetc.are shownthroughthe
use of everydayitemsfoundinahome,suchas toothpaste,nail polish,drinkcartons,school bags
and an album. Due to the coloursusedwhenpresentingthe institution etc. the brightcolourscreate
a fun andlaidback mood. The use of the itemsusedbyteenagersshowsthatthe movie will be
basedon a teenager(specifically,ateenage girl).The constantuse of panningandclose upto the
objectsshowsthatthe audience are able tobe ina relaxedstate asnothingdrasticallyunexpected
will occur.The continuityeditingusedthroughoutthe filmopeningtellsthe audience thatitissetin
a real time.
We are onlyintroducedtothe characters ina picture whichisstuckon an album.We notice the
characters that will appearinthe film.Howeverwe alsogetasense of the type of people theyare as
theyare wearingpinkclothing(bringingin agirlytheme) andone hasa meanlookonher face
showingthatshe may notbe a nice character.
At the endof the opening,the musicstopsandwe hearinaudible chatterandlaughterbymany
people.Thisshowsthatthe openingscene startswithinaschool andis basedaroundteenagersin
school. However,throughoutthe openingwhere the namesare shown,the householditemsshow it
isset ina home showingthatthe maincharacters may have beengettingreadytogo to school
clearlyindicatingthiswouldappeal tofemaleteenagers.

At the start of the filmopeningwe see amanina suitspeaking tohisbrotherwhoappearsto be ina
coma. We hear that he ispromisingrevenge uponsomeone showingusthata lot of action will take
place. The settingof the filmisshownina hospital inLondon.Asthe hospital isa place of safetyand
we see the destructionthathadtakenplace in thisbuildings,the filmimpliestothe audience that
there isa lot of dangerand no place issafe.Due to the destructionof the buildingwithsmoke
everywhere,the genre of thisfilmisanactionfilm.
The character that we followthroughoutthe openingof the filminone take,hasdarklighting
surroundinghimemphasisinghisdarkside andshowingthathe isthe villain of thisfilm.Hisfacial
expressionsare verycoldandshowsnoemotionalthoughthe hospital hasbecome awarzone
showingthathe is powerful andtobe feared.Ashe isin a suitwe see that he ispowerful aswell as
rich.
A soundtrackstartswhenthe characters walksandthe namesof the actors appearfirst.As the
actors such as VinDiesel andDwayne Johnsonhave alreadybeeninthe previousfastandfurious
films,we donotsee the characters inthe filmopeningbutratherthe introductiontothe new
character. The type of musicthatis usedisa hip hopsoundtrackwhichshowswhenitisset(inthe
twentyfirstcentury).The connotationsof thismusicisviolence,the adrenalineanddangerwhich
couldoccur.

The main coloursshown inthe openingare greysandblacks.Due to this,there isa darker andan
intense moodthatiscreated.The non-diegeticsoundtrackisplayedassoonas the openingcredits
starts whichstartswiththe namesof the actors. The actor’s namesare knowninthe centre of the
screeninboldwritingsowe are unable tomissthem.The up-beattempowhich increasesthe
adrenaline andthisclearlyindicates thisisof the actiongenre.Throughoutthe filmopening,itis
shotin one take followingthe characterthat we believe tobe the villain.Asthe audience we focus
solelyonhimandanalyse hisactions.Hiscoldalmostsneeringexpressionshowshimtobe a bad
character. We are alsoaware thathe will playanimportantrole inthe film.

Throughoutthe filmopeningthere are slow andgradual movementswhenthe creditsare shownas
well asthe pictures.Thiscreatessuspense showingthatitis a horror genre.The slow movements
makesthe audience more intriguedinwhat’stocome as the slownessof the movementsisalmost
as thoughthe audience are beinghypnotised.
The backgroundthroughoutthe openingisblack.Itis the maincolourthat we see showingthe
scarinessof thisand the obscuritycreatedshowingasthe audience are unaware of whatelse isto
come creatingmore danger.
Violinsare usedwhichistypical of the horrorgenre,however,atthe one pointtheyincrease rapidly
creatingdisorientationaswell asanincrease of suspense althoughthe audience feel asthoughthe
dangeris approachingfaster.The increase in dynamicsoccurswhenthe title of the filmappearsin
red. As itwas unexpected,the audience are more alertandfearful astheydonot know whatelse
will popupor whenitwill.The colourredconnotes withdangeraswell asbloodshowingthatthe
genre of thisfilmishorror. It also symbolisesthatdeathmayoccur withinthe film. The namesof the
institutions,actorsetc.showupin doublesmakingitblurryandthentheyslowlyfade slowingthe
whole processdowntherefore increasingthe tensionbuilt.

immediatelyaware of the institution.Atthe start,there isa use of establishingshotsshowingthe
locationof the city whichiswhere superheroesare typicallylocated.
The firstcharacter is seenasa typical superheroashiscostume consistsof ared cape and hisred
spandex pantsoverhistrousers. The redisveryvisible indicatingthatthere will be dangerasthat is
the connotationsof the colourredwhichis typicallyusedinsuperherofilms.

yethe hasdiedat the start of the filmshowingthathe isnot as powerful ashe isshowntobe due to

funnystatementsmakingthe audience relaxandbe at ease astheyare understandingthe comedic
side of thisfilm. The brassinstrumentfanfare establishesthe action/superherogenre of thisfilm.

Instantly,thisallowsthe audience tounderstandthe genre of thisfilmisachic flicandcomedy.Due to thisthe relaxingmoodiscreatedandmakesthe audience feelmore relaxedandatease. Withinthe filmopening,the namesof the directors,actors,producersetc.are shownthroughthe use of everydayitemsfoundinahome,suchas toothpaste,nail polish,drinkcartons,school bags and an album. Due to the coloursusedwhenpresentingthe institution etc. the brightcolourscreate a fun andlaidback mood. The use of the itemsusedbyteenagersshowsthatthe movie will be basedon a teenager(specifically,ateenage girl).The constantuse of panningandclose upto the objectsshowsthatthe audience are able tobe ina relaxedstate asnothingdrasticallyunexpected will occur.The continuityeditingusedthroughoutthe filmopeningtellsthe audience thatitissetin a real time. We are onlyintroducedtothe characters ina picture whichisstuckon an album.We notice the characters that will appearinthe film.Howeverwe alsogetasense of the type of people theyare as theyare wearingpinkclothing(bringingin agirlytheme) andone hasa meanlookonher face showingthatshe may notbe a nice character. At the endof the opening,the musicstopsandwe hearinaudible chatterandlaughterbymany people.Thisshowsthatthe openingscene startswithinaschool andis basedaroundteenagersin school. The character that we followthroughoutthe openingof the filminone take,hasdarklighting surroundinghimemphasisinghisdarkside andshowingthathe isthe villain of thisfilm.Hisfacial expressionsare verycoldandshowsnoemotionalthoughthe hospital hasbecome awarzone showingthathe is powerful andtobe feared.Ashe isin a suitwe see that he ispowerful aswell as rich. A soundtrackstartswhenthe characters walksandthe namesof the actors appearfirst.As the actors such as VinDiesel andDwayne Johnsonhave alreadybeeninthe previousfastandfurious films,we donotsee the characters inthe filmopeningbutratherthe introductiontothe new character.
