1. EVALUATION 7
ACTIVITY 7- LOOKING BACK AT YOUR PRELIMINARY TASK (THE CONTINUITY
EDITING TASK), WHAT DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE LEARNT IN THE PROGRESSION
FROM IT TO THE FULL PRODUCT?
AS Media- Albiona Ramadani
2. PRELIMINARY
▸ During the preliminary task, I had not acknowledged which camera shot
should be used to create a specific affect. The only thing I was focussing on
was to have a variety of angles which consisted of: long-shot, close up,
medium shot, birds eye view and over-the-shoulder shot. However, within the
opening, I made sure that it created a certain affect and gave an impression
to audience about the setting or character.
▸ Within the preliminary task, I decided to use the birds eye view when two
people were having a conversation. This is an incorrect decision that I had
chosen to do as the audience are unable to see the characters’ emotions
which lost the tension that was needed within the shot.
3. ▸During the editing of the preliminary task, the clips did not edit
together smoothly as it was very bumpy and created a bulky
feel as there was no clear flow between the different shots and
angles. Instead, there was a need of a smoother transition
between shots.
▸Throughout the clip there was a static background sound
when filming, of other students that were in the building, which
distracted the audience form the scene itself. Of which the
static constantly changed between every cut. The dramatic
mood and the tension was not clear due to this.
4. ▸With every cut the sound or positions of the actors changed
not allowing the clip to flow smoothly showing it is
inconsistent and hard to understand what is going on or how
the characters are feeling which is vital when filming.
▸Another mistake which was made when filming was that the
180 degree rule was broken which was due to the
inexperience of camera works. Therefore creates confusion
as to the positioning of the character before them.
5. LACK OF THE RIGHT CAMERA SHOT
▸Within the preliminary, there was not a shot/reverse shot
which would amplify and confirm the tension between the two
characters. However as this was not used, only half of this, so
the tension is lost and blocks the audience’s views on the
emotions of the character which does not let them empathise
or detect the personality of the characters and took away the
professional look to the preliminary task.
6. FILM OPENING
▸ However within my opening, I did not repeat the same mistakes as I did
before because now I used the shots and angles that were necessary to
create suspenseful mood that I wanted to make. For example, the low angle
shot shows the female protagonist as superior as well as making it clear that
she will be the main focus throughout this film.
▸ In addition, I had reduced the number of cuts within my final product as it did
not show the suspenseful atmosphere that I wanted to create. The prolonging
each scene, this makes the audience feel as though there will be a
excruciatingly long and almost never-ending occurrence within the film.
7. TEXT
▸Within the editing pop the opening sequence, I decided to
mute the diegetic sound from the clip as the music replaced
it to create a tense and dark mood which was contrary to the
existing diegetic sound from the scene. Therefore the
audience are able to focus solely on the character and her
journey of discoveries. Furthermore, as she is muted this
implies that she is not a powerful being as she is unable to
make her voice heard giving the impression that she will
have issues with her voice being heard by others.
Alternatively, the non- diegetic sound of the music shows
that Mandy is oblivious as she is not aware of her
surroundings due to her not being able to hear the ordinary
diegetic sounds of cars, footsteps etc.

LIGHTING
▸Low key lighting was essential for this particular opening as
it darkened the atmosphere implying the danger that will
occur. This also helped cast shadows within the scenes
creating an ominous atmosphere. This was also consciously
done to reflect the mood that the character is in and showing
her mental state. This allows the audience to connect with
her although she is yet to speak.
