2. Intertitles and Credits
This is the first inter title shown, It is telling the audience that
the trailer is suitable for all ages. Anyone of any age can
watch the trailer. This is common at the beginning of a trailer
for a movie with 15 or 18 age certificate film.
Here it tells the audience that the film and trailer was a Warner brothers
film, this is often shown at the beginning of the trailer.
Here it shows that Legendary pictures also helped to make
the film.
3. Intertitles and Credits
This here shows that the film is based on DC comics, this is
common at the beginning of all films that have been based
on comics.
Here the name of the film is stated. This is shown at the end
of the film so that people remember the name of the film the
most as it is the last thing they see.
It also here tells the audience when the movie is coming out
so that people know when to go and see it at the cinemas.
It also gives credit below to the companies that helped make
the film.
4. Location, Representation and USP
• The Location of this film is Gotham city. Gotham city is used because it is the original city from where
Batman is originally from. The film does not venture outside of Gotham; the scenes are placed in different
areas around the city. The outside world around Gotham is not really discussed. This gives the impression
that Gotham is a very dangerous place, almost in a different world of crime and danger unaffected by the
world around it. The use of a city environment gives the film a very dark environment which is not given in a
rural one. This is a good location for the film as the film makers want the movie to be dark as the batman
and the story in the dark knight is dark.
• The representations given in this trailer is of good and evil. Evil is seen as destructive and dangerous killing
everyone it‟s path, for example in this film the joker is seen as evil as he frightens and terrorises the people
of Gotham trying to create a city of fear and crime. Whereas good is seen as a savour from the darkness of
evil, always there to defend people from the darkness.
• I think the unique selling point of this film is the characters and the machines used by Batman. Characters
such as the joker are very unique to Batman. Many people find the joker fascinating, making him quite a
draw to the film. In the film and trailer bring his character out to be one that is unstoppable. The use of his
face paint and colourful clothing make him look strange. Many people want to know what his motive is,
which is never shown to the audience. The audience finds this very interesting as most „bad guys‟ in films
have motives such as ruling the world where as the jokers is to create destruction, which most people
cannot understand. The Batman is also quite unique, unlike most super hero characters; he does not have
any super powers. Batman is like any guy on the street and uses his human strength and intelligence to
defeat evil. The audience will find this attractive as they are able to relate to him far more. Other unique
points about the film are the machine used by the Batman such as his bat mobile and bike. Both machines
are very unique in the way they look, but at the same time look powerful. Men particularly will enjoy
watching these machines as they are very cool looking.
5. Institutional Reference, Genre and Target
Audience
• The trailer refers three institutions that created the film. Legendary picture, DC comics and
Warner brothers. All of these institutional references are shown at the beginning of the trailer.
Which is common, however sometimes they are shown at the end.
• The Genre of this film is an Action/Thriller. This movie is an action as it shows many
conventions of an action. The conventions shown are for example guns; props such as guns
and knives are often used in action movies, commonly used in action scenes such as
fighting. Other conventions of action movies shown in this trailer, is violence. Violence is
often used in action movies. Explosions also feature heavily in action movies also shown in
the trailer. The movie is a trailer also as it puts the audience on the edge of their seat. I think
this is shown by the use of music, the music is very epic and exciting which would make the
audience exciting making them sits on the edge of their seats. The music creates a large
amount of anticipation making the audience want to see the film. Explosion also in the film
create a large amount of suspense and excitement making the batman also a Thriller.
• Although this film is 12A, meaning that any child under the age of the 12 accompanied by an
adult can watch this film, I do think that the film has a target audience of 15; many people
would also agree that the film should have probably had an age certificate of 15. This is
because the film is quite violent which I do not think is particularly appropriate for the younger
audience and someone of the age of 15 the movie is more appropriate. I do also think that
movie is probably targeted at the age of 15 and above. This is because I think older
teenagers will enjoy the action packed violence in the film. Although I do think that the folder
audience would be attracted to the film, I think the older teenager audience from 15-19 would
enjoy the movie the most.
6. Costume and Sound
• The two main costumes used in the trailer are that of Batman and the joker which both have very unique
images to make them standout from society. Batman, is fully dressed in black with a cape, he appears to be
wear a bat like armour to protect him. The joker on the other hand has make up on his face, he is also
wearing a purple jacket and trousers with a green waist coat, he looks a lot like a clown and the face paint
is more like a war paint. He has quite long greasy long hair, like he has not washed for ages. The costume
he is wearing makes him look very creepy, where as the batman is made to look mysterious.
• The movie immediately starts with a crashing sound. This sound immediately gets the audience‟s attention;
between each scene this crashing sound is made. This really emphasises the „epic-ness‟ of the film and put
people on the edge of their seats. After this music is played, the music is classical and has a very epic like
feel to it, making the film feel very intense from the start. The first voice you here is the voice of the
antagonist, the joker. He says “where do we begin”, it is almost as if the joker is introducing the film. There
are also explosions throughout the movie keeping the audience on the edge of the seats and keeping to
the conventions of an action movie. There is also the sound of laughing by the joker, it is a cackling sound
emphasising the evilness of the joker character. A background story is also told in the dialogue that you
here in the scenes shown. This is to create a background for the audience so that they have some idea of
the story, this will get them interested in the film and want to watch more. Such as:
Joker: It‟s simple, we must kill the Batman
Batman: I know what I must become to defeat him
This dialogue in these scenes shown tells the audience what is going to happen and what the story will be
about. In this case the joker is going to try and kill the Batman and the Batman is going to try and defeat him.
The epic music continues throughout the trailer, keeping the audience interested. The music also increases in
intensity as the scenes shown also grow in intensity.
