Football factory
- 1. I have decided to analyse Football Factory which is a drama film based around football hooliganism. The official trailer is 2 minutes and 7 seconds long so it is not a teaser trailer. Within the opening encounters we are shown violence, slang (cockney slang) and costume in terms of what you would expect a football hooligan to wear (a cap, puffy jackets and white trainers.) The first shot is of the production company’s logo “Vertigo films” the reason for this is so the audience knows who has made it and if they have seen previous films from this company they will know what to expect.
- 2. The film is based around the football hooligan groups of West Ham and Millwall or as it is called in the film the “firms”. Dramas will normally touch on such problems as crime and that’s why I believe Football Factory is a successful film in terms of a trailer as people who have witnessed or know about the hooligans may be interested to see a realistic version of what it was like in the firms. However I do believe that films such as Football Factory limit themselves in terms of there target audience in the sense that they only appeal to football fans and or people interested in hooliganism which means it has to be successful in the sense that the target market will be interested in it.
- 3. Football Factory is set in an urban environment and faces the problem of gangs and grimes however it isn’t an urban drama. It isn’t a urban drama for the reason that it focuses on one person and his experiences within the football firms. You can tell the film is a drama as we are shown typical drama scenes such as violence and profanity. However there are no genre specific codes noticeable in the trailer in the sense of a drama.
- 4. The text is used to link together the narrative and the story and it gives info about the story. This is effective as if someone who didn’t have prior knowledge about the film/ or what the film is based on they would be confused about what the men are talking about and instantly wouldn’t be interested in the film. The title of the film is show right at the end of the trailer it is done in a way in which the trailer is gaining pace and then it slows it down this builds interest as just as it was getting into interesting/ fast pace scenes it ends leaving you wanting more.
- 5. Stars are highlighted in the trailer through close-ups mainly for example the main character who Danny Dyer portrays is shown numerous times in the trailer this is effective marketing as if someone is a fan of him they may be more entitled to watch the film in the sense that they want to see him. Furthermore the voice over in the trailer is also Danny Dyer so fans of him will be drawn into the film. Finally his voice is effective as it is the accent and speech you would expect to hear from a cockney football hooligan. Accolades and reviews are shown at the end from newspapers.
- 6. Editing is used to achieve drama in terms of the length of the shot as they use long shots followed by short cuts. They use crosscutting lots throughout the trailer I think the reasoning behind this is to suggest that in this sort of environment it is hectic and lots of different things are happening. The main range of shots are mid-shots as it has the person from the waist up this is because most of the trailer is people talking and or fighting. Finally as previously mentioned the key characters are highlighted in the sense that the scenes they are in are the longest.
- 7. The target audience for the film is young adults living in the UK, audiences who do not live in the UK most likely will still enjoy the film but may not understand certain references. The target audience is people in the UK as that it where the film is set and people can relate more. Furthermore crime in football has been widely reported in the media in the UK so people from the UK will have a wider prior knowledge. Furthermore the film is more appealing to a UK audience as cockney rhyming slang is used throughout and people who do not understand this type of speech may be confused when hearing this.
- 8. The target audience for the film is young adults as stereotypically they watch more violent films. The film does contain lots of violence which may be off-putting to a lot of audiences and typically it isn’t a very popular convention. The target audience in terms of gender is male as not many females appear in the trailer and aren’t involved in football hooliganism (stereotypically). There is lots of diegetic sound in this films as for example Danny Dyers voiceover is used throughout. Also there is a soundtrack playing over in the background constantly.
