1) Downsizing is a comedy about people who voluntarily shrink their bodies to escape overpopulation on Earth. It follows an average American couple who become wealthy after downsizing.
2) The trailer introduces the main characters through dialogue and scenes showing their ordinary lives. It establishes that downsizing allows people to gain wealth and status but also change their world completely.
3) Through one-liners, changes in editing pace, and the use of star power in opening shots, the trailer immerses viewers in the world of downsizing while teasing the transformation of the main characters' lives.
We watched both the theatrical trailers for Kong Skull Island, and Rings. We were then asked to create a report on the 7 key conventions of movie trailers. My report is shown below.

2. Downsizing trailer details
• On the 30th of August the Downsizing teaser trailer was
premiered at the Venice film festival 2017 and then the
full trailer on 12 September. Downsizing is the first film
for Alexander Payne since 2013. In the trailer
demonstrate most of the trailers convention such as
Introducing characters, having some of the best bits from
the movie as well as conversation between characters.
3. Narrative context
• Downsizing is a comedy thriller that is all about people
downsizing (in terms of body mass) into small people
because of pressuring overpopulation. The movie
focuses on how Downsizing affects an average couple in
America and how they can turn their orthodox lives to an
exciting rich life because everything is worth more and
turns there average savings into millions. It also looks at
what you lose when people gain wealth and power. This
because they are almost in a completely different world.
5. Pace of editing
• In this trailer the pace of editing starts off slow to show
off one liners and key character as well as the points and
general idea of the film. This slow pace at the start is
also used to give the film a sense of wonder. When in
the end of the second to thrid part of the trailer is where
the wonder and end of introducing characters the pace
of the editing speeds up to quicker cuts and in the end of
the third act a slower resolve to give the audience
something to think about an (enigma) happens and is the
slowest part of the film as well as the most intense.
6. 3 part Structure
• This trailer follows the three part structure (beginning,
middle and end) as well as some timing changes
because its not an action thriller that relies and has a ton
of action. This film is a Thriller Adventure Comedy that
relies on the revile of a joke or wonder for its
entertainment which means scenes a naturally longer
and progress slower and relies on the audience on
having some context prior to the scene. That’s why the
trailer sets up the characters and the mise en scene as
well as the narrative before speeding the pace of editing.
7. Introduction to characters
• In the very first shot we see an introduction to a star and
his character with his name appearing side by side of the
character. In this quick scene we don’t get to know much
about but the mise en scene of their character clothes
and facial expressions makes the audience feel as if
their an average joe. For instance in the very first shot of
the trailer, Matt Damon character is picking at his nails
and then looks up at something or someone with an lase
fair look indicating that he is not really bothered at what
has just has taken place.
8. Stars
• In this trailer the stars are the very first thing we
introduced to. For instance Matt Damon name and face
are used within the first shot and the same can be said
for Christoph waltz in the next shot. This shows that the
film is relying heavily on the star power of the actors
because they are very first things shown which shows
that they believe that these stars are the most important
part of the film. This is likely because people attention
span for products and marketing is a lot shorter which
means marketers have sell the film within the first 5-10
seconds which means they put what they believe will sell
the film within the very first part of the film.
9. Dialogue/One Liners
• In the Downsizing trailer characters use one liners and
dialogue so the audience can understand what type of
person they are and what makes them different. For
example Matt Damon reacts to the situation differently to
everybody in the bar. He says “Wow, that is wild. Isn’t it?
"This piece of dialogue demonstrates the type of
character he is. This shows that he is simple minded as
well as the fact that he doesn’t saying what everybody is
thinking or speaking his mind. This piece of dialogue is
used to make him relatable to the audience
10. Camera Angles
• In the trailer they use a low angle pov shot to make us
feel as if we are in the audience. They have done this
because it is another way to immerse the audience into
the world and makes the audience want to go and see
the trailer because they feel like they are in the world
and have to experience it . Another example of this is
when is in the bar where the shot is a high angle
longshot of everybody face in the bar. This is supposed
to create a sense that everybody in that moment feels
the same and is a way to suggest to the audience that
they should react in the same way.
11. Titles
• The style of the titles are simple to not attract too much
attention away from the sound and the other shots in the
trailer. The film makers have chose to make this design
choice because they believe that their film (stylistically)
is shot simple and that the style of the shots are not the
most important factor this is stereotypical since this film
is a comedy and comedy focus more on the joke rather
than trying to be stylistically different.
12. Voice overs/soundbridge
• In the trailer lots of voice over sound bridges occur
delivered from characters we have just scene talking in
the last couple of shots or will see talking. In the first
eight seconds of the trailer we hear a voice over while
we are getting introduced to Christian Wiig character.
The voice carries over into the next couple of shots until
we see the character who the voice belongs to (as well
as the scene). This sound bridge is used to connects
shots because it’s is usually illustrating that there is a
more important over arching ark.
