Costumes can tell audiences some information about the
characters they see. I’ll analyse costumes seen in the trailer
and how this impacts what viewers think about these
characters.
Props can also give you an insight into what the film has in
store. They can also drop hints as to what genre the film is.
The men who wake up and find themselves in a place together are
wearing jeans and shirts which are casual clothing. This makes them
appear as the average stereotypical man as if this could happen to
anyone. The films target audience could relate to the film as they look
like working class characters. Their clothing doesn’t change through out
the film suggesting that the film isn’t set over a long period of time or
the characters aren’t able to change clothing because they’re in the
middle of no where. Throughout the film you see their clothing
gradually getting dirtier as they can’t change or wash their clothes. The
colour of their clothing is dark connoting the dark storyline and the bad
situation they’re in.
In a flashback you will see the character below for about two seconds.
The person is wearing something that burglars wear to hide their facial
identity. This connotes law breaking in the film and the obvious fact
that there are antagonists in the film. His costume is dark blending him
into his surrounding implying he’s trying to not be noticed.
This woman is only shown once in the film where it is clearly her. She is
wearing a smart skirt and a casual jumper. The modest clothing suggests
she is a serious character who may be someone who tries to help out the
men. However, as the skirt is just above her knee she’s also in the film to
support the Male Gaze Theory as she may attract males to watch the
film.
This screenshot below has a different colour because it must be through
what a CCTV camera can see. However, due to the use of costume we
can see who the characters are. We can tell that two of the characters are
in the police force. This shows that the police will get involved in the
film at some stage. Taking this into consideration audiences may think
at some stage there might be some fight scenes between the antagonists
and the police. We can tell this is the woman we previously saw because
she is wearing the same clothing.
Props are used in this screen shot to set the scene and to show viewers
the type of place the characters are in. There are a lot of barrels most of
which could contain flammable liquids suggesting there might be
explosions further into the film.
The phone is shown quite a lot throughout the trailer strongly
suggesting that this is an important element in the film. It is how the
antagonists are able to communicate with the hostages and how the
characters find out people are on their way to kill them. The desk and
the items on it suggest that the people that use this space don’t care
about it’s looks and don’t clean. The cards on the table suggests the
antagonists are people who like to play card games or even betting in
their spare time.
Rope can be seen in this screen shot to show that the people were
captured and tied up to make them unable to move. It shows that
whoever did this to them clearly didn’t want the people escaping.
Including this prop makes the scene even more realistic because if
antagonists left people they captured, they would tie them up to make
sure they don’t try to get help.
In the trailer the clock is emphasised through the use of editing
implying that time is an important element in the film. The people who
have been captured only have a limited amount of time to escape before
the antagonists arrive to kill them. Showing the clock tells viewers this
letting them know the characters are in a race against time.
There is a scene in the film where a character reads from a newspaper
article. To make the scene realistic a newspaper has been made. Even
though the prop is only seen for a couple of seconds it does add meaning
to the scene. Without it, the characters wouldn’t have been able to find
out vital information about people going missing.
Guns are shown quite a bit in the last half of the trailer making the
scenario come across as even more serious. Showing this prop is a genre
convention for action films connoting violence and gun fighting. It
suggests there may be some deaths in the film and threats.
This prop links back to the barrels you see towards the start of the
trailer. The facts that the top of the lighter is off suggests that it is about
to be lit. Therefore, thinking about the two props in the same location
suggests that there will be explosions.

Unknown costumes and props used

  • 1. Costumes can tell audiences some information about the characters they see. I’ll analyse costumes seen in the trailer and how this impacts what viewers think about these characters. Props can also give you an insight into what the film has in store. They can also drop hints as to what genre the film is.
  • 2.
  • 3. The men who wake up and find themselves in a place together are wearing jeans and shirts which are casual clothing. This makes them appear as the average stereotypical man as if this could happen to anyone. The films target audience could relate to the film as they look like working class characters. Their clothing doesn’t change through out the film suggesting that the film isn’t set over a long period of time or the characters aren’t able to change clothing because they’re in the middle of no where. Throughout the film you see their clothing gradually getting dirtier as they can’t change or wash their clothes. The colour of their clothing is dark connoting the dark storyline and the bad situation they’re in.
  • 4. In a flashback you will see the character below for about two seconds. The person is wearing something that burglars wear to hide their facial identity. This connotes law breaking in the film and the obvious fact that there are antagonists in the film. His costume is dark blending him into his surrounding implying he’s trying to not be noticed.
  • 5. This woman is only shown once in the film where it is clearly her. She is wearing a smart skirt and a casual jumper. The modest clothing suggests she is a serious character who may be someone who tries to help out the men. However, as the skirt is just above her knee she’s also in the film to support the Male Gaze Theory as she may attract males to watch the film.
  • 6. This screenshot below has a different colour because it must be through what a CCTV camera can see. However, due to the use of costume we can see who the characters are. We can tell that two of the characters are in the police force. This shows that the police will get involved in the film at some stage. Taking this into consideration audiences may think at some stage there might be some fight scenes between the antagonists and the police. We can tell this is the woman we previously saw because she is wearing the same clothing.
  • 7.
  • 8. Props are used in this screen shot to set the scene and to show viewers the type of place the characters are in. There are a lot of barrels most of which could contain flammable liquids suggesting there might be explosions further into the film.
  • 9. The phone is shown quite a lot throughout the trailer strongly suggesting that this is an important element in the film. It is how the antagonists are able to communicate with the hostages and how the characters find out people are on their way to kill them. The desk and the items on it suggest that the people that use this space don’t care about it’s looks and don’t clean. The cards on the table suggests the antagonists are people who like to play card games or even betting in their spare time.
  • 10. Rope can be seen in this screen shot to show that the people were captured and tied up to make them unable to move. It shows that whoever did this to them clearly didn’t want the people escaping. Including this prop makes the scene even more realistic because if antagonists left people they captured, they would tie them up to make sure they don’t try to get help.
  • 11. In the trailer the clock is emphasised through the use of editing implying that time is an important element in the film. The people who have been captured only have a limited amount of time to escape before the antagonists arrive to kill them. Showing the clock tells viewers this letting them know the characters are in a race against time.
  • 12. There is a scene in the film where a character reads from a newspaper article. To make the scene realistic a newspaper has been made. Even though the prop is only seen for a couple of seconds it does add meaning to the scene. Without it, the characters wouldn’t have been able to find out vital information about people going missing.
  • 13. Guns are shown quite a bit in the last half of the trailer making the scenario come across as even more serious. Showing this prop is a genre convention for action films connoting violence and gun fighting. It suggests there may be some deaths in the film and threats.
  • 14. This prop links back to the barrels you see towards the start of the trailer. The facts that the top of the lighter is off suggests that it is about to be lit. Therefore, thinking about the two props in the same location suggests that there will be explosions.
