World Factbook") and is the largest country in the world. It is about 1.8 times the size of the United
States ("The World Factbook"). Most of Russia is either large stretches of plains or areas with a lot
of forests and mountains, with the exception of the Siberian Tundra. It is difficult to perfectly
describe Russia's climate because of it's large size. However, in general, the country only has two

(O'Connor) between its Air Force, Army, and Navy. When discussing Russia's demographics, it is
important to note that it is the largest country in the world, ranging across 17.1 million square
kilometers. Russia thus has many different ethnic groups, languages, and religions. Russia's reported
population from 2017 is 143.9 million which includes over 170 ethnic groups designating as their
nationalities. Russia's major ethnic groups are Russian and Tatar with their languages being the top
two as well. As for religion, Russians are mostly Russian Orthodox or Muslim, and the 2% are other

Introduction
Understanding a country's culture as it pertains to military operations is highly important in the
modern era. Dictionary.com defines culture as "the behaviors and beliefs characteristic of a
particular social, ethnic, or age group". There are many examples throughout history that show the
negative consequences of ignoring or misunderstanding the cultures of other countries. The most
recent example is our long sustained operations in the Middle East. We have operated in the Middle
East for the better part of two and a half decades. Through our own successes and failures, it is
obvious how important cultural awareness can be. The mistakes we have made have created more
animosity towards our military and our country in general. Over the last decade, our government has
worked continuously to understand and teach those lessons to our service members. Through those
efforts, we have been able to win over many of the hearts and minds that we lost during the early
part of the 1990's and 2000's. Continuing these practices in the future, with countries such as Russia,
will allow us to overcome many of the mistakes and problems we have encountered in the past.
This paper is the culmination of my own personal thoughts and in no way reflects any official views

people is oppressed in a manner intended to crush their spirit, one of two things can happen: either
they will be crushed, as intended, or their resolve will be solidified. Despite occupations in the past,
Ukraine has maintained a nationalistic spirit that has transcended many decades and dictators. Over
eighty years ago Ukraine was nearly pushed to a breaking point. This occurred when Joseph Stalin
instituted a brutal, yet bloodless murder of Ukrainians, something that continues to have an impact
on Ukraine and Russia. In late November of 2013, Ukrainian leadership under President
Yanukovych, decided to pursue closer trade ties with Russia instead of the European Union (Ukraine
Crisis). This is vitally important because it revealed a split in the country which dates back to the
early 1930's. This split, according to a BBC article named Ukraine Crisis, resulted in the people of
Western Ukraine inciting a protest numbering over 800,000. As explained by Chalupa, the European
Union, or E.U., membership means distance from Russia and increased economic potential. Ties

we do know about Russia's early history is quite interesting. Russia started as a small group of cities

A book with no plot, sentence structure that messes with the very rules of what it means to write,
and contains sentences so long they can last five lines and become so confusing a reader may need
to read them three of four times to grasp their meaning, does not sound like it would make a very
good book. But, in this masterpiece of a character study, Nabokov is able to build Pnin throughout
the book, despite there not being any goal he is working towards and having the scenes be strung
together without a connection, simply throwing the reader headfirst into various snapshots of this
character's life. Usually in a book the character receives some of his characterizations through his
experiences and the change that happens naturally as they progress to some sort of climax, but Pnin
does not have this shift because there is no climax, there is no personality shift or lesson learned

In 1911, Polish–British novelist Joseph Conrad composed Under Western Eyes. Conrad is
commonly regarded as one of the greatest novelist ever to write in the English language due in large
part to his stylistic choices, philosophical insights, and general prose proficiency. Under Western
Eyes is a voluminous text with many philosophical undertones, a complex plot, and complicated
narrative structure. The protagonist of the story, Kirylo Sidorovich Razumov, experiences much
turmoil due to his betrayal of a fellow student and revolutionary named Victor Haldin, and finds his
entire existence convoluted new social ties, new emotions, and an inner moral conflict. The question
the novel raises has to do with Razumov's changed circumstances and how these affect his character.
Although it is tempting to see him as a "transformed" character, that interpretation is not entirely
persuasive. I would suggest that Razumov is, from beginning to end, marked by his inveterate
independent nature as an incorrigible loner.
In the beginning of the novel Razumov's character is introduced. He leads a solitary life, having no
family, friends or real purpose and is therefore independent. These characteristics are relayed by the
narrator, who has read Razumov's "diary" and thus is able to speak with some authority about
Razumov's qualities as a person. After reading the diary, the narrator notes in the beginning of the
story, "The word Razumov was the mere label of a solitary individuality. . . . His

integrated into Russia. The whole episode drew international consternation against Russia, which

quickly adopted by the media; for example, on March 2, 2014 Bloomberg published an article

Battleship Potemkin was a 1920's Russian Propaganda film that was used to inspire change, and an
uprising against the Tsarist government. During that time period in Russia there was an Revolution
for change and to the eventual rise of the Soviet Union. During this time they were several different
propaganda movies that some what inspired the Russian nation. Battleship Potemkin was one of
those and it was one of the more famous ones. After watching this film myself I will break down the
films propaganda ways. Near the beginning of the movie it showed how sailors daily lives were like
under the Tsarist control. For the sailors, life on Battleship Potemkin was very hard. They had the
ship captians treating the crew badly and hitting one sailor. Then it showed the sailor break down
and cry as the others watched feeling bad for him. At the same time a sailor named Vakulinchuk
talked of uprising and going arms. That all the sailors should have honor and repsect, as the other
sailors watched they smiled and nodded their heads in agreement. After that scene it showed the
sailors gathering around the meat carcasses ready to cook and eat. But the sailors noticed that the
meat was covered in maggots and rotten. Lead by Vakulinchuk they started a boycott instead of an
uprising. The ship leaders were watching this unfold and had their doctor monitor the carcasses and
