Why We Should Introduce Australia
Principal, teachers, parents and friends welcome. Thank you for this opportunity to speak to you
today.
Are you all aware that there are over 7000 languages spoken in the world today? In recent years,
Australian schools located in metropolitan area were just starting to introduce languages classes other
than English, such as French, Chinese or Indonesia. So that student could choose any other languages
that offer, as their second language. Compares to China, English are compulsory throughout lower and
upper schools and I personally believe that this will result in having a disadvantage position for us as
Australians.
Manea Senior College is specially design for senior s students, who willing to continue for further
study or start their employment. We should take in the accountability that, there will be students who
needing another language to help assist for better opportunities? In order to help students to develops,
I strongly suggest that we should offer more language classes. What languages should Australian
schools introduce? There are studies suggested that Asian languages (Indonesian, Chinese and
Japanese) are preferred to taught in Australia comparing with European languages. I would say that
both languages would not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By knowing a second language broadens employment opportunities. Nowadays China is getting
stronger and their businesses are growing throughout the world. Australia is the only nations that are
locate near to china, so I personally would recommend our school to introduce Chinese as a second
language for sure. According to my background, I am a student who come a from a bilingual country
that speak at least 3 different language. Personally I have the feeling of language empowerment;
language is the main tool for communication so by having the ability to speak more than one language
can always empower us and our

Summary Of The Four Idols Of Bacon And Cultural...
Four Idols of Bacon and Cultural Misunderstanding
Introduction
In the Humanistic Tradition the author, Gloria Fiero introduces Francis Bacon as an English scientist
and politician. Bacon known as the leading advocate of the empirical method, is best known for his
work Novum Organum. Fiero looks at Bacon s work because of the importance of these four classes
of Idols. The four classes of idols in Bacon s method are Idols of the Tribe, Idols of the Cave, Idols of
the Marketplace, and Idols of the Theatre. Fiero states, A prophet of the new learning, he sought to
eliminate errors in reasoning derived from blind adherence to traditional sources of authority and
religious beliefs (The Humanistic Tradition page 115). In other words, Bacon creates a new method
that is based on science rather than religious beliefs. This is essential due to the fact that hypothesis
can be validated. In the film Dear White People written, directed, and co produced by Justin Simien
discusses racial tension in prestigious and predominately white colleges, from a minority perspective.
Thus, correlates with the four Idols of Francis Bacon. A non colored minority student named Kurt, son
of the school s president, Garmin Club House (the house he is affiliated with), and with the assistance
of a colored student conceptualized their annual party theme of interpretation of black culture by
painting their faces black. A minority student named Lionel, insulted by the theme, confronts the party,

A Lie Is What Kept Me Free
A Lie Is What Kept Me Free
Lies often overcomplicate situations by causing a person to have to continually tell more lies to cover
up the original, when he or she could have just told the truth in the beginning. However, the problem
is that the other option is not always so great either. The truth is perfectly honest, and that can cause
one to get in trouble. I believe the main reason why we, as humans, lie is to protect ourselves and to
protect the things for which we have much affection. Once, I had told a lie to keep myself from getting
into more trouble than telling the truth would gotten me. This lie protected from losing what was the
most important thing I had at the time, my freedom. This is the story of the time I lied to protect my
freedom. To understand why I lied, it is primarily important to understand why I believe my freedom
was at risk. I grew up in a sheltered environment in the sense that for a long time I was sheltered from
much of the outside world and sheltered from making my own decision. For example, my parents
believed that I wasn t ready to sleep over a friend s house, whose parents they had known for five
years, until I was in high school. Due to this upbringing, I felt a severe lack of personal freedom when
I entered high school. I believed that I would get more freedom when I turned sixteen and would be
legally old enough to drive because I had always been a well behaved kid. However around the time I
turned fifteen, my parents began to argue

Notes On The Generation Effect
The Generation Effect
Christopher J Gonzaba
Texas A M University
Abstract
Generation effect tests whether people remember information better when they participate and
generate the word rather than just reading them. In our study we used a lexical decision task to test the
spreading activation. Twelve undergraduate students from Texas A M participated. Some of the trails
consisted of two related words and some consisted of two unrelated words. Two main effects were
used; between subjects and within subjects. Task type represented by between subjects showed
whether those who generated words generated information better than non generated words. The
within subjects suggested whether rule type affect generated words and ... Show more content on

Memory storage implies putting that information into either short term or long term memory. Sensory
memory is another type of memory but since it is less than one second memory storage has no use.
Short term and long term memory decide whether we are able to retrieve the information or not
(Mastin, 2010).
Sensory and short term memory is less than one minute of storage and because of that they have no
use for explicit and implicit memory. Both are found and used to breakdown long term memory.
Explicit memory is the use of conscious thinking for the use of recall of important facts or events.
Implicit memory is the opposite; it is the use of unconscious thinking of information and reaction. For
example, texting, walking, or writing, on does not simply stop to think how to preform those actions
(McLeod, 2007).
To further breakdown explicit and implicit memory we use declarative and procedural memory.
Declarative memory corresponds with explicit memory because it engages in conscious thinking to
recall factual information. Procedural memory corresponds with implicit memory because it is the
basic repetition of facts that do not take much into consideration. Declarative memory is broken down
in episodic and semantic memory. Episodic memory helps the retrieval of facts, events, or experiences
in ones life. Semantic memory recollects general facts and concepts that one can typically think of off
the top of their head (Mastin, 2010). Memory plays a

College Debt Vs College Experience
College Debt vs The College Experience
Choosing a college is one of the most important decisions in a young adult s life. That is, of course, if
someone is going to college. For me, I m using my last year of high school to come to the conclusion
of where I want to attend college. There are plenty of college options, but I have narrowed it to two
colleges I would like to attend: Owens Community College and Bowling Green State University.
Owens and Bowling Green are both great options for me, but I believe I would have a better time and
experience if I went to Bowling Green because there are many activities and extracurriculars that I
could be in.
In all reality, Owens, financially, would be the best option for me. It is way cheaper, and a lot ... Show

education. It has my major, and lots of things to do when I don t have class. Owens is a lovely school,
but it s not the one for me. Bowling Green will make me happy while not spending way too much. I m
very excited that I have already been accepted to BGSU and I can t wait to attend my first year at

Essay about Civil War Battles of Chancelorsville and...
This is only two battles in the whole Civil War yet countless lives were lost in each one. These battles
were only two months apart. The goal of this paper is to give information on these two Civil War
battles Chancelorsville and Gettysburg.
The Battle of Chancelorsville In the Battle of Chancelorsville, Hooker was the Union general and Lee
was the Confederate general. Hooker had 130,000 men and Lee had 60,000 men. Hooker had more
men and supplies and Lee was outnumbered. Before the battle Hooker said, May God have mercy on
General Lee, for I will have none. In the morning of May 1, 1863, Hooker was condensing his forces
waiting for Lee to attack. That afternoon fighting started, with Hooker and Lee having skirmishes
outside of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Later that day Lee got news that a Union force under Sedgwick was marching toward Chancelorsville.
Lee went after Sedgwick.
On May 4, 1863 Lee and Sedgwick met at the Battle of the Salem Church. The battle was indecisive.
That night both Hooker and Sedgwick retreated over the Rappahannock. The Union lost 16,800 men
and the Confederates lost 13,000 men. It is considered one of Lee s finest battles. Jackson s arm had to
be amputated from the injury he got. Gangrene set in and he died on May 10, 1863. Even though the
Confederates had won the battle of Chancelorsville it was at high costs.
The Battle of Gettysburg The Battle of Gettysburg happened after Lee won Chancelorsville. Lee went
to Pennsylvania hoping to capture a northern city and re supply his men. Lee also hoped to draw the
Union men from the Mississippi River. On July 1, 1863 Lee sent Confederate General Harry Heth to
Gettysburg to get shoes for his troops. Union General John Buford s force was dug in at Seminary
Ridge in Gettysburg. Heth came in contact with Buford s scouts. The Confederates went up an
unfinished railroad and arrived outside of town at 8:00A.M. The Confederates line was at Cemetery
Ridge. After two hours of fighting Reynold s Union force arrived on the scene. Reynold was killed by
a Confederate sharpshooter almost as soon as he entered the battle field so Abner Doubleday took his
place of command. Later the

Essay On The Center For Life Science In Boston
The construction of The Center for Life Science in Boston was completed in 2008 and a year later in
April 2009 it was awarded LEED Gold certification as part of the LEED BD+C (Building Design and
Construction) Core and Shell v1.0 pilot scheme (usgbc.org, n.d.). The development was designed by
Tsoi/Kobus Associates, Boston, and developed by Lyme Properties, Hanover, N.H., and BioMed
Realty Trust, San Diego and constructed as a high rise research building with multi tenant lease
agreements (Schneider, 2009). The development scope was a project type that the design team had not
undertaken before, and thus a new collaborative approach was necessary to ensure project success.
The project was credited for the unique location within the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The design incorporated 18 floors, outside the traditional building codes that typically limit the use of
high hazard materials above 65 feet (Schneider, 2009), which The Boston Redevelopment Authority
approved despite no similar proposals having been submitted previously. The building of The Center
for Life Science | Boston was not only unique in the fact that concept was far from traditional
construction, but also because no one on the 2001 project team had ever worked on a project looking
to achieve LEED certification in an existing, congested developed area (Schneider, 2009). The project
team was composed of unique positions in order to enhance the likelihood of project success, with the
building s architecture playing a key role in overall LEED concepts and a specific Sustainable Design
Coordinator being employed by Tsoi/Kobus Associates (Schneider, 2009). The project was noted as
being many pieces of a puzzle that the Architect and Developer arranged and rearranged in various
combinations prior to the final layout confirmation (Schneider, 2009), which highlights the agile
approach to the design phase of the project. The integrated, sustainable design approach took a holistic
approach to the building as a whole, not simply independent, individual parts, thus allowing the team
to find resolutions to the many project challenges with specific collaborated and targeted solutions

CHAPTER #1 KEY TERMS Competitive Advantage (p.4) An advantage that a bank, or any company,
has over its competitors is that firm s competitive advantage. This advantage may allow it generate
more sales revenue, increase its profit margins, or deliver better customer service. Whatever the
advantage, it is what makes it better (the advantage) than its competitors. Stakeholders (p. 18)
Stakeholders are groups or individuals who affect or are affected by the company s actions and/or
performance. They are interested in the company s survival and profitability. Stakeholders may be
internal (e.g. teammates, managers, executives) or external (e.g. communities, regulators,
governments, etc.) Chapter #2 KEY TERMS Strategic (long range) Planning (p. 39) An activity that is
used by a company s executive management to set priorities and organize resources to ensure that the
company is working toward the common goal. It is a top down process which could predict future
success based on anticipated growth. Scenario Planning (p. 40) is a strategic planning method in
which managers envision different scenarios to anticipate plausible future outcomes. Using the
scenario planning, management takes the strategic plan, then asks what if and prepares for those
results. Chapter #3 KEY TERMS Five Forces Model (p. 64) Michael Porter identified five key
competitive forces that determine an industry s weaknesses and strengths and those managers need to

recent literature, which I incorporated in my context related discussion. In the last two paragraphs of
chapter four I oppose non contracting situations to contracting situations concerning their respective
benefits to earnings quality. In the end I conclude my seminar paper with a wholistic assessment of all
chapters.
2. The conservatism principle and the asymmetric timeliness of earnings a summary
2.1. The author s motivation
In the underlying paper the author re examines the conservatism principle and its asymmetric effects
on earnings. With samples consisting of all firm year observations from 1963 to 1990 with returns data
on the CRSP NYSE/AMEX Monthly files and respective accounting data on the COMPUSTAT
Annual Industrial and Research files, he formulates and tests four major hypotheses to find evidence
for his predictions. At first he chracterizes conservatism in accounting as the more timely recognition
in earnings of bad news regarding future cash flows than good news .1 In his first hypothesis he
predicts a more sensitive response of earnings towards bad news in comparison to good news, proxied
by negative and positve annual stock returns. His second prediction is that earnings are more timely
than cash flow, indicating a stronger association of accruals to conservative accounting effects.
Hypotheses three and four account for a test on the

The, Social, And The World Of The Plaz Material Culture ...
In the vast field of anthropology, there are many ways to investigate a particular society. The three
readings; Being in the Market versus Being in the Plaza: Material Culture and the Construction of
Social Reality in Spanish America, Excluded Spaces: The Figure in the Australian Aboriginal
Landscape, and Indexical Speech across Samoan Communities all approach this topic differently. The
first uses physical anthropology to examine the landscape, the second uses anthropological taboo to
examine how this impacts the culture, and finally the third uses linguistic anthropology to analyze the
home life of a tribe. Although all different in nature, each form plays a key role in understanding the
world from the view of an anthropologist. As such this paper will examine the similarities and
differences of each work. So that they can be compared to one another, to form a concrete view of the
material, which enables the reader to fully understand how each work relates to one another.
While in Spanish America Miles Richardson examines the difference between the busy street markets
and the indoor plaza. Noticing that the two seem to mirror opposites in nature, he concludes that the
reason for this is due to material culture (Low Lawrence zuniga, 1988). Upon this conclusion,
Richardson continues into detail comparing the two places of business. However before this
comparison can be made, the concept of material culture must be explained first. As put by

Description Of An Effective Villain
English Assignment
What s an effective villain?
It s about what makes an effective villain. What makes an effective villain is their motive, backstory,
characteristics, how they stand out from others, their power and how they use it. Their back story
gives us little glimpses of what they hunger for and it shows us their purpose. It s important for the
villain to stand out from others because then it is easy for the audience to symbolize and spot the
villain. It is also important to state how the villain uses their power, this reveals their feelings and
characteristics. Overview of main villain
Ben Solo is a human from the planet Chandrila. He is also known as Kylo Ren, this name is related to
his association with being a member of the Knights of Ren. The Knights of Ren were a group of

their leader.

Targeting Teen Girls
Too much Pressure on Teen Girls to have the Perfect Body. The perfect body for a teen in America
would be identified as a flat stomach, tan skin, thigh gaps, small waist, and curvy figure. Clothes sizes
are extra small t shirts, 00 pants/short. But the truth is, not everyone has this so called perfect body. It
does not help that big named band stores are influencing this. Constantly girls are targeted to have a
perfect body. Unfortunately, teen girls are overwhelmed by the pressure to look a certain way in today
s society If you were to go out and walk around the city or even a small town, you would constantly
see something or someone advertising weight loss such as TV ads, weight loss ads, shakes, diet pills,
books, and even apps. The models who advertise done help either, they were paid to make the product
look good and say it works. But then again if it doesn t, we wonder why. Industries are targeting
young teens because they know at this stage in their lives, they are vulnerable, are worried about how
they look, and are trying to fit in to the crowd. Which is why these products are targeting young girls.

Modern Heroes In Modern Society
Everyone has had an experience with a hero at least once in their life. People sometimes view real
people as heroes while others have fictional heroes. Whether a person s hero is fictional or real,
everyone has one. Having a hero plays an important role in a person s life. They help provide children
with support while they are growing and developing. Heroes are role models to children. They look up
to their heroes and aspire to be like them. That is why it is so fundamental for children to have worthy
heroes. The concept of heroes has been around for hundreds of years, dating all the way back to
Ancient Greece. Over time, heroes have drastically changed. As society has evolved, our heroes have
evolved with it. Their goals and motivations have changed to coincide with the views of modern
society. Modern day heroes are better role models for children than ancient heroes because they have
less selfish motives, better qualities, and are portrayed
The word heroism brings to mind different things to different people. This is because people tend to
have different concepts of heroism and what it means. The definition of heroism has changed a lot
since ancient times and will continue to change. Despite these changes, there are a few things about
heroes that will never change. A hero can be described as a person who is admired for courage,
achievements, or noble qualities. Both ancient and modern day heroes are idealized for possessing
these traits. Heroes, no matter from what time period, will always be powerful, strong, brave, and
valued. Some people may argue that heroes have remained fundamentally the same, but there are
some key differences that show just how much our heroes have changed since Ancient Greece.
In ancient times, heroes had a different motivation for performing good deeds than they do now. Life
was a lot harder during these times because food, water, and timber for building was scarce. This
caused many ancient heroes to have selfish motives. They only did certain tasks to gain something
from it. An example of an ancient hero with selfish motives is Odysseus. The article Myth of the
Legendary Odysseus states that on his long journey home, Odysseus only completed quests that would
benefit him and

Power Of Joseph Stalin
Following the death of Lenin in January 1924, Joseph Stalin emerged as the vital dictator of Russia in
February; he ruled the Soviet Union like a personal fiefdom. He aimed to transform the Union of
Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) from a backwards agriculture society into a great industrial
totalitarian nation, which he believed was essential if Russia was to survive in a world of powerful and
hostile capitalist states (Todd Allan 2001). Stalin claimed that
The major priority should be to consolidate the Marxian socialist system with the USSR and make the
country strong again (Cowie. H.R, 1992).
Stalin subsequently based the organisation of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union Government
(CPSUG) on the principles of democratic centralism, aiming to achieve the dictatorship of the
proletariat (Payton Rousseau). According to Payton Rousseau, under Stain s reign, the CPSUG and
Soviet Government were two separate bodies, however, almost all high government officials were
Bolsheviks party members. It was this system of interlocking dual membership that enabled the CPSU
to both make and enforce policy (Payton Rousseau). This level of government authority allowed Stalin
to enact any policy he saw necessary, as he was the leading General Secretary and by the late 1930 s
Joseph Stalin was exercising as much power, in as authoritarian a manner, as the Tsars had done
before him (Cowie. H.R, 1992). This idea coincides with a comment made in 1974 by Alexander
Vasilevsky, a

The Difference Between The Art Of Picasso And Braque
Modernist Assault:
1. We know that experts had trouble being able to tell the difference between the works of Picasso and
Braque. Defend whether or not this made each artist s work any less original.
It does not make their art any less original. Originality is about creativity and innovation. While their
work was similar, it was the only of it s kind at the time. They pioneered the path of cubism side by
side. I would not consider this to be unoriginal, but a tandem effort to make their own art. Surely, they
challenged one another which pushed their art to new heights. I don t think cubism would be what it is
today without both artists, as they were at the forefront of creating new art during that period.
2. Filippo Tommaso Marinetti claimed that the motor car was more beautiful than the marble statue of
the winged Nike. Develop an explanation that agrees or disagrees with Marinetti.
I can understand Marinetti s claim that the motor car was more beautiful than the marble statue of the
winged Nike. However, I don t agree with his claim. The motor car is an ingenious creation that
required great minds to create, but the question is about beauty. Marble statues bent to the will of man

Toyota s Production System ( Tps )
Toyota Production System As part of Toyota Global, Toyota Australia inherited legendary Toyota
Production System (TPS). TPS was created by the founder of Toyota Motor Corporation as a set of
principles that have been proven in day to day practice over many years (Toyota Australia n.d.) TPS
has three desired outcomes: To provide the customer with the highest quality vehicles, at lowest
possible cost, in a timely manner with the shortest possible lead times. To provide members with work
satisfaction, job security and fair treatment. It gives the company flexibility to respond to the market,
achieve profit through cost reduction activities and long term prosperity. (Toyota Australia n.d.) TPS
consists of Kaizen, Just In Time (JIT), and Jidoka. Kaizen means never stop improving. Toyota
encourages its employees to not only follow the rules, but also improve the rules to achieve highest
productivity. Just In Time means to produce necessary units in the necessary quantities at the
necessary time. Jidoka means automation with a human touch (Toyota Australia n.d.). Toyota
Australia utilises its manufacturing plant in Althona, Victoria to produce cars in five departments.
Firstly, powertrain department produces engine components. Once the engine is finished, it is sent
directly to assembly department. Secondly, Press plant manufactures steel panels such as side panels,
roof panels and bottom panels using press machine. Thirdly, welding shop department fastens and

The Hills And Rocky Creags
She felt right at home, living in her Seanmhair s cottage and with Scotland, as her new address.
Scotland had actually always been her second home. It s going to take time to get acclimated to her
new living arrangement and the Scots way of life. Aileana decided she should take a walk into town to
see if any of her friends might be out and about. It was a magnificent sunny day, now that the morning
mist had burned off. As she walked along the sidewalk in town, the smell of the ocean and green hills
made her feel so wonderful and content. She could genuinely appreciate the splendor of the country
here, she loved that you were able to see the rolling hills and rocky creags. It was so different from the
San Fernando Valley where she ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Aileana hoped all the married men would be home enjoying their off time with their wives and family.
The testosterone level was quite high in the pub as the men were all bragging about one thing or
another. She could hear a group of rowdy men laughing about some off color story one of the oil
riggers was revealing. The room had a friendly vibe, lots of beer drinking and cheerful men. Aileana
walked over to the bar to place her order for the sampler platter of shrimp, scallops and mussels in
white wine, butter, and garlic broth. The platter was served with a chunk of warm dark Scottish oat
bread with a generous portion of soft creamy butter. She decided to go with a white wine since her
seafood platter came in a wine broth. Aileana thought it s a good thing she had been getting her walks
in the morning and surfing an hour or so in the afternoons. Or else she wouldn t be able to get through
the pub doors. Just as she got ready to take a seat towards the back of the pub; so she could watch all
the local action. She noticed one of the men who was the size of a mountain, and as solid as a block
wall; who played a mean game of darts with his cohorts and seemed to fill the tavern. Dart man
backed up and bumped her glass of Sauvignon Blanc which splashed down the front of her green plaid
woolen Pendleton shirt. The big beast of a man had been laughing with his buddies and was unaware
she walked behind him. He spun around and started to

Noise Atlanta Airport
Anyone who has ever lived by an airport can attest to the noise that is produced by planes landing and
taking off. It can be such a nuisance that some people even move out of their homes to get away from
the noise. Atlanta International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world, with over 800,000
flights arriving and departing annually.(Mutzabaugh, 2015) There is no surprise that the airport
produces large amounts of noise which affect the residents of Atlanta. The Airport has taken measures
to reduce the noise caused by all these flights. Noise abatement here has been ongoing for almost 30
years, starting in 1972 with noise abatement on the departure tracks of runways.
Today the airport has the Airport Noise Mitigation Program.

2. 2 Textbooks Tomlinson (2002) stated that by way of various activities, readings and explorations,
textbooks give the essential recommendations into class (as cited in Rahimi Hasani, 2011, p. 67).
There can be no disclaiming the fact that textbooks still keep very large recognition and most are
certainly here to stay even if one believes that textbooks are notably inflexible and one sided to be
employed instantaneously as instructional material (Mohammadi Abdi, 2014, p. 1149). Furthermore,
the advantages of the use of textbooks are:  Providing the structure of the teachers and students to
follow which can give a sense of security as the class advances through the book  Providing
attractive, motivational, colourful, and diverse content  Providing graded content suitable for the
learners level and a full syllabus that covers language skills and language systems  Serving as a great
time saving for teachers  Providing the source of ideas and methodologies (Retrieved from

The Importance Of Small Business In America
Small businesses in America have existed since civilizations first settled, whether people traded goods
in the place of currency, or offered services and talents for money. Over the past 100 years, the small
businesses and entrepreneurs of America have evolved in ways no one could have predicted. From the
invention of the internet to the sliding scale that is the American economy, small businesses have seen
their times of great success and struggle alike. With the changing culture, obstacles may morph into
opportunities, and, conversely, opportunities can turn into obstacles. The presence of social media is
an opportunity for businesses today but an obstacle for businesses of the early 20th century; demand
was an opportunity for business owners in the 20th century but an obstacle today; and economic
fluctuation is an obstacle found in both time periods. Unlike small businesses in the early 20th
century, small businesses today can greatly benefit from social media platforms. Not only can
businesses run their own pages online, they can pay for ads that promote their product in a unique and
novel way. For example, social media can allow a smaller business to grow on their chosen platform
(such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.) and increase the amount of potential customers that view
their product(s) or service(s). Everyday, there is an abundance of advertisements uploaded and viewed
on several varieties of social media platforms and [b]ehind these staggering numbers is a

The Charity Organization Society
1. The Charity Organization Society was based in the scientific movement of organizations. Workers
believed that charity work needed more definition and organization and that charity should be focused
more on individual need rather than as a whole population. Focusing on individual need was intended
to improve relief operations while making resources more efficient. They also intended to eliminate
public outdoor relief. With the promotion of more organization and efficiency the new Charity
Organization Societies were born. Trattner states that these new requirements for organization and
efficiency spread so rapidly that within 6 years 25 cities had such organizations and by the turn of the
century there were some 138 of them in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This evidence made it clear that dependency was linked to misfortune rather than misconduct
(Trattner, 1999). The new conclusions about poverty made way for reform in poverty relief; within
this reform where the roots of the Settlement House Movement lie.
The Settlement House Movement was a response to the Charity Organization Society who had made
little efforts to improve living and working conditions of the poor. Where C.O.S had friendly visitors
Settlement House workers considered themselves social reformers rather than charity workers
(Trattner, 1999). Their approach was to prevent ails that the poor suffered from such as urban living
and working conditions. They also attempted to bridge the gaps between classes and races. These
workers were not interested in just giving out financial or verbal relief they were trying to reform
society and the way the poor were viewed.
This new ideology of the Settlement House Movement was very different from that of the C.O.S who
had focused on individual need rather than looking at society as a whole as a cause of poverty. Where
C.O.S provided spiritual uplift the Settlement House Movement promoted social and economic
change (Trattner, 1999). C.O.S workers focused on dependency while Settlement House workers were
concerned with the reasons behind poverty. Settlement House workers focused on equality within their
philosophy and in their

Unequal Distribution Of Wealth
The unequal distribution of wealth has always been a huge problem that has plagued society
throughout the ages. As forms of governments of each nation have changed, the unequal distribution
of wealth has remained a constant. Even in Communist countries, which were supposed to eliminate
this problem by abolishing the private ownership of land, the unequal distribution of wealth was still a
problem in their society. It is difficult for society as a whole to make advancements, because of the
unequal distribution of wealth. It also creates a gap between the classes in a society, which usually
leads to clashing opinions about many important issues. The unequal distribution of wealth also makes
the living conditions of the less fortunate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The unequal distribution of wealth is a major problem that all societies must face. The biggest
problem that it creates is a large separation between the upper and lower classes in society. The gap
between the two classes is mostly caused by a difference in interests. For example, Marx believed that
the upper class is only concerned with increasing its own cash flow, and as a result, ?Has converted
the physician, the lawyer, the priest, the poet, the man of science, into its paid wage laborers?(225). I
only partially agree with Marx?s idea, because although the upper class is concerned with its own well
being, it doesn?t necessarily exploit the lower class and make them a mere wage slave. The gap is
actually created because the poor want laws to be made that help them maintain what little wealth they
have, while the upper class wants to pass laws that will help them gain more wealth. Marx also
believed that the unequal distribution of wealth, ?Has reduced the family relation to a mere money
relation?(225). I have the opposing opinion on this matter. People who are in poverty usually have
closer family relationships than the upper classes do, because they are more dependent upon one
another to survive. The unequal distribution of wealth also makes it difficult for the poor to get out of
poverty. The poor normally have inadequate schooling, which makes it difficult for them to get good
jobs, and thus

Examples Of Marxism In Fight Club
The novel Fight Club is a complicated violent novel. It contains a lot of meaningful things about
psychological aspects. According to the article Is Tyler Durden a Marxist? , Goodman states that this
novels is a character study in schizophrenia. It s true because the main character of the novel is a multi
personality person, the nameless narrator. When he sleeps, he is Tyler Durden, a total different
personality man, a Marxist s representative. When he wakes up, he is him. Ideologies of Marxism are
expressed by Tyler s words such as religion, class struggles, and consumerism. Along with Marxism,
the psychoanalytic criticisms of Sigmund Freud such as displacement, dream and the meaning of
death are also expressed in this novel. Most responses ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He represents for the narrator s dream of freedom. Today, the modern world is characterized by three
big C : Consumerism, Corporatism, and Capitalism. These three C mechanize people, and push them
into a chain of exploitation unconsciously. The workers received money from the bosses for their
labor. Then, the workers use for shopping. Quickly, the money is back to the bosses. Despite of being
surrounded by innumerable valuable things, the workers lived meaningless lives: an endless loop,
unable to escape. The narrator realizes it, and finds bored with his life. He wants to escape the endless
loop, he wants to be freedom, but no hope. The narrator just only has that in his dream. In the novel,
Tyler works for himself; he invents Fight Club, and then Project Mayhem in order to create classless
society (Tyson, 51). Therefore, we can conclude that Tyler represents for the narrator s dream. It also
explains why Tyler just only appears when the narrator is asleep. Dream and Dream Symbols are
expressed very clearly through the multi personality person, the

Case Study for Cognitive Behavior Therapy
The main theory that has largely influenced my clinical work at my current practicum site is cognitive
behavior therapy (CBT). CBT asserts it is an individual s thoughts and behaviors that directs the
individual, so in this case my job would be to help the my client (individual) to find his or her thought
that is driving his or her action(s). CBT is a fine dance; it may seem simple, identify the thought and
replace the thought with a healthier thought. CBT is quite contrary to being simple, the techniques and
timing is a fine juggling and balance act. To elaborate further, after a client has identified his or her
thought that has been driving his or her action, they would need to restructure certain things in the
their life that will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

What We Now Call The Ozone Layer
What we now call the ozone layer was discovered in 1913 by the French physicists Charles Fabry and
Henri Buisson. Caroline et al suggests the earth s atmosphere has five layers; they are placed in order
of closest and deepest to farthest and thinnest. They include the troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere,
thermosphere and exosphere. (Tran, Caroline, Dan Chong, Anne Keith, and Jordan Shively. Depletion
of the Ozone Layer. UC Davis ChemWiki. STEMWiki Hyperlibrary). Ozone is a naturally occurring
molecule containing three oxygen atoms. These ozone molecules form a gaseous layer in the Earth s
upper atmosphere called stratosphere. (The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia, 6th ed. ozone layer .
Columbia University Press) this extends from six miles above the Earth s surface to 31 miles. In the
stratosphere the ozone layer acts as the earth s sun screen; as ozone take in solar ultraviolet radiation
strongly, especially at wavelengths less than about 310 nm in the ultraviolet A and Ultraviolet B parts
of the spectrum. Ozone thus acts as a strainer, preventing potentially detrimental Ultraviolet radiation
from reaching the surface which can causes skin cancer and genetic damage. (Hester, Ronald E, and
Harrison, Roy M, eds. Causes and Environmental Implications of UV B Radiation. Cambridge, GBR:
Royal Society of Chemistry, 2000. ProQuest ebrary)
So, what causes the ozone layer depletion? Scientists knew that Nitric oxide (NO) can catalytically
react with ozone (O3) to produce O2

The Effects Of Colonialism In Monkey Beach By Eden...
Canada has been well regarded with its attitude towards multiculturalism, establishing an Act that
protects the rights of people who have different beliefs and the encouragement for all cultures to work
together. While being the only country to have a policy such as the Multiculturalism Act, racism has
been a part of Canadian history, including but not limited to the colonialism of Indigenous Peoples and
the internment of Japanese Canadians. The effects of colonialism on indigenous culture and the
treatment of Japanese Canadians are reflected in the novels Monkey Beach by Eden Robinson and
Obasan by Joy Kogawa. The main characters of the novels, Lisamarie in Monkey Beach and Naomi in
Obasan, both come to terms with the effects of growing up in minority communities in British
Columbia, as well as discovering their own identities, by reflecting on their pasts during a time of
family tragedies. Lisamarie struggles with accepting and understanding her spirituality in a family that
mostly ignores and denies their connections to the spirituality of their ancestors, due to the effects of
colonialism and residential schools. Naomi reflects on her family being removed from their homes and
the racism that the Japanese faced after the Pearl Harbour attack. Robinson and Kogawa use their
protagonists to look back to the past and reflect on the events that have shaped their families.
Lisamarie discovers how spirituality and relationships have been molded due to the colonialism and

Coastal Dune Systems Serve As A Natural Alternative For...
Chapter 1. Introduction, project aim and main objectives.
1.1 Introduction
Coastal dune systems serve as a natural alternative to hard engineering defence methods. They act as a
barrier which contribute to the stabilization of the coastal landscape and protects it when coastal
disasters occur. During storms, waves flatten the beach and collapse the dune facing the beach,
realising sand offshore and creating large bars in the surf zone. These sandbars cause waves to break
further offshore, and following the storm, waves with less height return the eroded sand slowly from
offshore back to the beach, allowing the dune to recover. In this way, the dunes absorb the impact of
storms preventing or minimising intrusion of waters into inland areas, protecting structures from
flooding. On the other hand, hard engineering methods tend to interrupt natural beach processes,
increasing erosion risk and beach scour, which often ends up in artificial replacement of sand.
Therefore, dune systems are highly efficient and the least expensive defence against shoreline erosion,
and is a softer solution since there is no introduction of harsh elements to the system (Choi et al.,
2013; Gomez Pina et al., 2002; Cornelis and Gabriels, 2003). An example is the dune system along the
Dutch coast, where plenty of research has been done due to their importance as a line of defence
feature in the Netherlands (de Groot et al., 2012).
Such defences also have downsides, and one of those are transgressive

The Viewpoints of Three Muslim Women on Being Oppressed
When non Muslims in the United States think of Islam the first things that comes to many their minds
are September eleventh, terrorist, the middle east, and oppression of women. Most Americans believe
that Muslim women must be oppressed because they have to wear those veils over their heads ,
completely cover themselves, and their husbands are allowed to have multiple wives. A survey last
year by the Council on American Islamic Relations found that more than half of the 1,000 U.S.
respondents believe that Islam encourages the oppression of women.( al Jadda, A veil doesn t mean
oppressed,1). But are Muslim women really oppressed or do they have a choice? In this paper I will
look at the viewpoint of three Muslim women. The first one is Sumbul Ali Karamali the author of The
Muslim Next Door . The second is Aisha Stacey who is an Australian revert to Islam that works as a
writer at the Fanar Cultural Islamic Centre in Doha, Qatar. The third is Khalida Tanvir Syed who is the
author of Through White Noise , but the source I will be referring to is a paper she wrote called
Misconception About Human Rights and Women s Rights In Islam. I will also look at the viewpoint of
Azam Kamguian, who is an Iranian writer and women s rights activist and my final source.
In The Muslim Next Door Ali Karamali argues that when it comes to the status of women in Islam
what we Americans see is very different from Muslim women s reality. She says that the oppressed

  • 2. Why We Should Introduce Australia Principal, teachers, parents and friends welcome. Thank you for this opportunity to speak to you today. Are you all aware that there are over 7000 languages spoken in the world today? In recent years, Australian schools located in metropolitan area were just starting to introduce languages classes other than English, such as French, Chinese or Indonesia. So that student could choose any other languages that offer, as their second language. Compares to China, English are compulsory throughout lower and upper schools and I personally believe that this will result in having a disadvantage position for us as Australians. Manea Senior College is specially design for senior s students, who willing to continue for further study or start their employment. We should take in the accountability that, there will be students who needing another language to help assist for better opportunities? In order to help students to develops, I strongly suggest that we should offer more language classes. What languages should Australian schools introduce? There are studies suggested that Asian languages (Indonesian, Chinese and Japanese) are preferred to taught in Australia comparing with European languages. I would say that both languages would not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By knowing a second language broadens employment opportunities. Nowadays China is getting stronger and their businesses are growing throughout the world. Australia is the only nations that are locate near to china, so I personally would recommend our school to introduce Chinese as a second language for sure. According to my background, I am a student who come a from a bilingual country that speak at least 3 different language. Personally I have the feeling of language empowerment; language is the main tool for communication so by having the ability to speak more than one language can always empower us and our ... • 3. Summary Of The Four Idols Of Bacon And Cultural... Four Idols of Bacon and Cultural Misunderstanding Introduction In the Humanistic Tradition the author, Gloria Fiero introduces Francis Bacon as an English scientist and politician. Bacon known as the leading advocate of the empirical method, is best known for his work Novum Organum. Fiero looks at Bacon s work because of the importance of these four classes of Idols. The four classes of idols in Bacon s method are Idols of the Tribe, Idols of the Cave, Idols of the Marketplace, and Idols of the Theatre. Fiero states, A prophet of the new learning, he sought to eliminate errors in reasoning derived from blind adherence to traditional sources of authority and religious beliefs (The Humanistic Tradition page 115). In other words, Bacon creates a new method that is based on science rather than religious beliefs. This is essential due to the fact that hypothesis can be validated. In the film Dear White People written, directed, and co produced by Justin Simien discusses racial tension in prestigious and predominately white colleges, from a minority perspective. Thus, correlates with the four Idols of Francis Bacon. A non colored minority student named Kurt, son of the school s president, Garmin Club House (the house he is affiliated with), and with the assistance of a colored student conceptualized their annual party theme of interpretation of black culture by painting their faces black. • 4. A Lie Is What Kept Me Free A Lie Is What Kept Me Free Lies often overcomplicate situations by causing a person to have to continually tell more lies to cover up the original, when he or she could have just told the truth in the beginning. However, the problem is that the other option is not always so great either. The truth is perfectly honest, and that can cause one to get in trouble. I believe the main reason why we, as humans, lie is to protect ourselves and to protect the things for which we have much affection. Once, I had told a lie to keep myself from getting into more trouble than telling the truth would gotten me. This lie protected from losing what was the most important thing I had at the time, my freedom. This is the story of the time I lied to protect my freedom. To understand why I lied, it is primarily important to understand why I believe my freedom was at risk. I grew up in a sheltered environment in the sense that for a long time I was sheltered from much of the outside world and sheltered from making my own decision. For example, my parents believed that I wasn t ready to sleep over a friend s house, whose parents they had known for five years, until I was in high school. Due to this upbringing, I felt a severe lack of personal freedom when I entered high school. I believed that I would get more freedom when I turned sixteen and would be legally old enough to drive because I had always been a well behaved kid. However around the time I turned fifteen, my parents began to argue ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Notes On The Generation Effect The Generation Effect Christopher J Gonzaba Texas A M University Abstract Generation effect tests whether people remember information better when they participate and generate the word rather than just reading them. In our study we used a lexical decision task to test the spreading activation. Twelve undergraduate students from Texas A M participated. Some of the trails consisted of two related words and some consisted of two unrelated words. Two main effects were used; between subjects and within subjects. Task type represented by between subjects showed whether those who generated words generated information better than non generated words. The within subjects suggested whether rule type affect generated words and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Memory storage implies putting that information into either short term or long term memory. Sensory memory is another type of memory but since it is less than one second memory storage has no use. Short term and long term memory decide whether we are able to retrieve the information or not (Mastin, 2010). Sensory and short term memory is less than one minute of storage and because of that they have no use for explicit and implicit memory. Both are found and used to breakdown long term memory. Explicit memory is the use of conscious thinking for the use of recall of important facts or events. Implicit memory is the opposite; it is the use of unconscious thinking of information and reaction. For example, texting, walking, or writing, on does not simply stop to think how to preform those actions (McLeod, 2007). To further breakdown explicit and implicit memory we use declarative and procedural memory. Declarative memory corresponds with explicit memory because it engages in conscious thinking to recall factual information. Procedural memory corresponds with implicit memory because it is the basic repetition of facts that do not take much into consideration. Declarative memory is broken down in episodic and semantic memory. Episodic memory helps the retrieval of facts, events, or experiences in ones life. Semantic memory recollects general facts and concepts that one can typically think of off the top of their head (Mastin, 2010). Memory plays a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

That is, of course, if someone is going to college. For me, I m using my last year of high school to come to the conclusion of where I want to attend college. There are plenty of college options, but I have narrowed it to two colleges I would like to attend: Owens Community College and Bowling Green State University. Owens and Bowling Green are both great options for me, but I believe I would have a better time and experience if I went to Bowling Green because there are many activities and extracurriculars that I could be in. The goal of this paper is to give information on these two Civil War battles Chancelorsville and Gettysburg. The Battle of Chancelorsville In the Battle of Chancelorsville, Hooker was the Union general and Lee was the Confederate general. Hooker had 130,000 men and Lee had 60,000 men. Hooker had more men and supplies and Lee was outnumbered. Before the battle Hooker said, May God have mercy on General Lee, for I will have none. On May 4, 1863 Lee and Sedgwick met at the Battle of the Salem Church. The battle was indecisive. That night both Hooker and Sedgwick retreated over the Rappahannock. The Union lost 16,800 men and the Confederates lost 13,000 men. It is considered one of Lee s finest battles. Jackson s arm had to be amputated from the injury he got. Gangrene set in and he died on May 10, 1863. Even though the Confederates had won the battle of Chancelorsville it was at high costs. The Battle of Gettysburg The Battle of Gettysburg happened after Lee won Chancelorsville. Lee went to Pennsylvania hoping to capture a northern city and re supply his men. Lee also hoped to draw the Union men from the Mississippi River. On July 1, 1863 Lee sent Confederate General Harry Heth to Gettysburg to get shoes for his troops. Union General John Buford s force was dug in at Seminary Ridge in Gettysburg. Heth came in contact with Buford s scouts. The Confederates went up an unfinished railroad and arrived outside of town at 8:00A.M. The Confederates line was at Cemetery Ridge. The development was designed by Tsoi/Kobus Associates, Boston, and developed by Lyme Properties, Hanover, N.H., and BioMed Realty Trust, San Diego and constructed as a high rise research building with multi tenant lease agreements (Schneider, 2009). The project team was composed of unique positions in order to enhance the likelihood of project success, with the building s architecture playing a key role in overall LEED concepts and a specific Sustainable Design Coordinator being employed by Tsoi/Kobus Associates (Schneider, 2009). The project was noted as being many pieces of a puzzle that the Architect and Developer arranged and rearranged in various combinations prior to the final layout confirmation (Schneider, 2009), which highlights the agile approach to the design phase of the project. The integrated, sustainable design approach took a holistic approach to the building as a whole, not simply independent, individual parts, thus allowing the team to find resolutions to the many project challenges with specific collaborated and targeted solutions (Center for Life Science Boston / Tsoi/Kobus ... In the end I conclude my seminar paper with a wholistic assessment of all chapters. 2. The conservatism principle and the asymmetric timeliness of earnings a summary 2.1. The author s motivation In the underlying paper the author re examines the conservatism principle and its asymmetric effects on earnings. With samples consisting of all firm year observations from 1963 to 1990 with returns data on the CRSP NYSE/AMEX Monthly files and respective accounting data on the COMPUSTAT Annual Industrial and Research files, he formulates and tests four major hypotheses to find evidence for his predictions. At first he chracterizes conservatism in accounting as the more timely recognition in earnings of bad news regarding future cash flows than good news .1 In his first hypothesis he predicts a more sensitive response of earnings towards bad news in comparison to good news, proxied by negative and positve annual stock returns. His second prediction is that earnings are more timely than cash flow, indicating a stronger association of accruals to conservative accounting effects. Hypotheses three and four account for a test on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The three readings; Being in the Market versus Being in the Plaza: Material Culture and the Construction of Social Reality in Spanish America, Excluded Spaces: The Figure in the Australian Aboriginal Landscape, and Indexical Speech across Samoan Communities all approach this topic differently. The first uses physical anthropology to examine the landscape, the second uses anthropological taboo to examine how this impacts the culture, and finally the third uses linguistic anthropology to analyze the home life of a tribe. Although all different in nature, each form plays a key role in understanding the world from the view of an anthropologist. As such this paper will examine the similarities and differences of each work. So that they can be compared to one another, to form a concrete view of the material, which enables the reader to fully understand how each work relates to one another. While in Spanish America Miles Richardson examines the difference between the busy street markets and the indoor plaza. Noticing that the two seem to mirror opposites in nature, he concludes that the reason for this is due to material culture (Low Lawrence zuniga, 1988). Upon this conclusion, Richardson continues into detail comparing the two places of business. However before this comparison can be made, the concept of material culture must be explained first. • 19. Modern Heroes In Modern Society Everyone has had an experience with a hero at least once in their life. People sometimes view real people as heroes while others have fictional heroes. Whether a person s hero is fictional or real, everyone has one. Having a hero plays an important role in a person s life. They help provide children with support while they are growing and developing. Heroes are role models to children. They look up to their heroes and aspire to be like them. That is why it is so fundamental for children to have worthy heroes. The concept of heroes has been around for hundreds of years, dating all the way back to Ancient Greece. Over time, heroes have drastically changed. As society has evolved, our heroes have evolved with it. Their goals and motivations have changed to coincide with the views of modern society. Modern day heroes are better role models for children than ancient heroes because they have less selfish motives, better qualities, and are portrayed The word heroism brings to mind different things to different people. This is because people tend to have different concepts of heroism and what it means. The definition of heroism has changed a lot since ancient times and will continue to change. Despite these changes, there are a few things about heroes that will never change. A hero can be described as a person who is admired for courage, achievements, or noble qualities. Both ancient and modern day heroes are idealized for possessing these traits. Heroes, no matter from what time period, will always be powerful, strong, brave, and valued. Some people may argue that heroes have remained fundamentally the same, but there are some key differences that show just how much our heroes have changed since Ancient Greece. In ancient times, heroes had a different motivation for performing good deeds than they do now. Life was a lot harder during these times because food, water, and timber for building was scarce. This caused many ancient heroes to have selfish motives. They only did certain tasks to gain something from it. An example of an ancient hero with selfish motives is Odysseus. • 20. Power Of Joseph Stalin Following the death of Lenin in January 1924, Joseph Stalin emerged as the vital dictator of Russia in February; he ruled the Soviet Union like a personal fiefdom. He aimed to transform the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) from a backwards agriculture society into a great industrial totalitarian nation, which he believed was essential if Russia was to survive in a world of powerful and hostile capitalist states (Todd Allan 2001). Stalin claimed that The major priority should be to consolidate the Marxian socialist system with the USSR and make the country strong again (Cowie. H.R, 1992). Stalin subsequently based the organisation of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union Government (CPSUG) on the principles of democratic centralism, aiming to achieve the dictatorship of the proletariat (Payton Rousseau). According to Payton Rousseau, under Stain s reign, the CPSUG and Soviet Government were two separate bodies, however, almost all high government officials were Bolsheviks party members. It was this system of interlocking dual membership that enabled the CPSU to both make and enforce policy (Payton Rousseau). This level of government authority allowed Stalin to enact any policy he saw necessary, as he was the leading General Secretary and by the late 1930 s Joseph Stalin was exercising as much power, in as authoritarian a manner, as the Tsars had done before him (Cowie. Defend whether or not this made each artist s work any less original. It does not make their art any less original. Originality is about creativity and innovation. While their work was similar, it was the only of it s kind at the time. They pioneered the path of cubism side by side. I would not consider this to be unoriginal, but a tandem effort to make their own art. Surely, they challenged one another which pushed their art to new heights. I don t think cubism would be what it is today without both artists, as they were at the forefront of creating new art during that period. 2. From the invention of the internet to the sliding scale that is the American economy, small businesses have seen their times of great success and struggle alike. With the changing culture, obstacles may morph into opportunities, and, conversely, opportunities can turn into obstacles. The presence of social media is an opportunity for businesses today but an obstacle for businesses of the early 20th century; demand was an opportunity for business owners in the 20th century but an obstacle today; and economic fluctuation is an obstacle found in both time periods. Unlike small businesses in the early 20th century, small businesses today can greatly benefit from social media platforms. Where C.O.S had friendly visitors Settlement House workers considered themselves social reformers rather than charity workers (Trattner, 1999). The unequal distribution of wealth is a major problem that all societies must face. The biggest problem that it creates is a large separation between the upper and lower classes in society. The gap between the two classes is mostly caused by a difference in interests. For example, Marx believed that the upper class is only concerned with increasing its own cash flow, and as a result, ?Has converted the physician, the lawyer, the priest, the poet, the man of science, into its paid wage laborers?(225). I only partially agree with Marx?s idea, because although the upper class is concerned with its own well being, it doesn?t necessarily exploit the lower class and make them a mere wage slave. The gap is actually created because the poor want laws to be made that help them maintain what little wealth they have, while the upper class wants to pass laws that will help them gain more wealth. Marx also believed that the unequal distribution of wealth, ?Has reduced the family relation to a mere money relation?(225). I have the opposing opinion on this matter. People who are in poverty usually have closer family relationships than the upper classes do, because they are more dependent upon one another to survive. The unequal distribution of wealth also makes it difficult for the poor to get out of poverty. Caroline et al suggests the earth s atmosphere has five layers; they are placed in order of closest and deepest to farthest and thinnest. They include the troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere and exosphere. (Tran, Caroline, Dan Chong, Anne Keith, and Jordan Shively. Depletion of the Ozone Layer. UC Davis ChemWiki. STEMWiki Hyperlibrary). Ozone is a naturally occurring molecule containing three oxygen atoms. These ozone molecules form a gaseous layer in the Earth s upper atmosphere called stratosphere. (The Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia, 6th ed. ozone layer . Columbia University Press) this extends from six miles above the Earth s surface to 31 miles. In the stratosphere the ozone layer acts as the earth s sun screen; as ozone take in solar ultraviolet radiation strongly, especially at wavelengths less than about 310 nm in the ultraviolet A and Ultraviolet B parts of the spectrum. Ozone thus acts as a strainer, preventing potentially detrimental Ultraviolet radiation from reaching the surface which can causes skin cancer and genetic damage. While being the only country to have a policy such as the Multiculturalism Act, racism has been a part of Canadian history, including but not limited to the colonialism of Indigenous Peoples and the internment of Japanese Canadians. The effects of colonialism on indigenous culture and the treatment of Japanese Canadians are reflected in the novels Monkey Beach by Eden Robinson and Obasan by Joy Kogawa. The main characters of the novels, Lisamarie in Monkey Beach and Naomi in Obasan, both come to terms with the effects of growing up in minority communities in British Columbia, as well as discovering their own identities, by reflecting on their pasts during a time of family tragedies. Lisamarie struggles with accepting and understanding her spirituality in a family that mostly ignores and denies their connections to the spirituality of their ancestors, due to the effects of colonialism and residential schools. Naomi reflects on her family being removed from their homes and the racism that the Japanese faced after the Pearl Harbour attack. Robinson and Kogawa use their protagonists to look back to the past and reflect on the events that have shaped their families. Lisamarie discovers how spirituality and relationships have been molded due to the colonialism and the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 34. Coastal Dune Systems Serve As A Natural Alternative For... Chapter 1. Introduction, project aim and main objectives. 1.1 Introduction Coastal dune systems serve as a natural alternative to hard engineering defence methods. They act as a barrier which contribute to the stabilization of the coastal landscape and protects it when coastal disasters occur. During storms, waves flatten the beach and collapse the dune facing the beach, realising sand offshore and creating large bars in the surf zone. These sandbars cause waves to break further offshore, and following the storm, waves with less height return the eroded sand slowly from offshore back to the beach, allowing the dune to recover. In this way, the dunes absorb the impact of storms preventing or minimising intrusion of waters into inland areas, protecting structures from flooding. On the other hand, hard engineering methods tend to interrupt natural beach processes, increasing erosion risk and beach scour, which often ends up in artificial replacement of sand. Therefore, dune systems are highly efficient and the least expensive defence against shoreline erosion, and is a softer solution since there is no introduction of harsh elements to the system (Choi et al., 2013; Gomez Pina et al., 2002; Cornelis and Gabriels, 2003). An example is the dune system along the Dutch coast, where plenty of research has been done due to their importance as a line of defence feature in the Netherlands (de Groot et al., 2012). Such defences also have downsides, and one of those are transgressive ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. The Viewpoints of Three Muslim Women on Being Oppressed When non Muslims in the United States think of Islam the first things that comes to many their minds are September eleventh, terrorist, the middle east, and oppression of women. Most Americans believe that Muslim women must be oppressed because they have to wear those veils over their heads , completely cover themselves, and their husbands are allowed to have multiple wives. A survey last year by the Council on American Islamic Relations found that more than half of the 1,000 U.S. respondents believe that Islam encourages the oppression of women.( al Jadda, A veil doesn t mean oppressed,1). But are Muslim women really oppressed or do they have a choice? In this paper I will look at the viewpoint of three Muslim women. The first one is Sumbul Ali Karamali the author of The Muslim Next Door . The second is Aisha Stacey who is an Australian revert to Islam that works as a writer at the Fanar Cultural Islamic Centre in Doha, Qatar. The third is Khalida Tanvir Syed who is the author of Through White Noise , but the source I will be referring to is a paper she wrote called Misconception About Human Rights and Women s Rights In Islam. I will also look at the viewpoint of Azam Kamguian, who is an Iranian writer and women s rights activist and my final source. In The Muslim Next Door Ali Karamali argues that when it comes to the status of women in Islam what we Americans see is very different from Muslim women s reality. She says that the oppressed Muslim women we see in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
