An Advanced Practice Nurse ( Apn )
Almost every day an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) will feel the impact of policy and change in
the healthcare field, from the institutional, local, community, state and national levels nurses have a
responsibility to contribute to the discussion focused on healthcare improvement on all levels. Let's
first look at these issues on an institutional level, Often we are faced with changes in policy in our
current roles , it could be a new policy or a revision to an old policy , it can be written or a unwritten
" understood policy" that everyone follows . We had one of these policies in our clinic, Uninsured or
self–pay patients were routed to main campus clinics over 35 miles away because of their uninsured
or self–pay status. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This new policy made it easier for the patients to seek care closer to their homes and work and not
exhaust their limited funding. The number of uninsured has grown steadily since 2000 in this
country. It has increased from 1–2 million with one exception a dip in 2007 and now continues to
increase. (Nickitas, Middaugh & Aries) As nurses we must advocate change and implementation of
policies that will improve healthcare for this population as well as others. The impact of policy
change can also be seen on the local or community level, disparity in access to health care is seen in
many communities. In 1985 , The Report of the Secretary's Task force on Black and Minority Health
in the United States , took a close look at health disparities among blacks, Hispanic, Asian / Pacific
Islander and Native American Indians . This disparity led to an 80% excess of mortality these groups
due to such diseases as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, infant mortality, chemical
dependency and unintentional injury. A good example of policy change includes nursing taking an
active role in breaking that link with social economic status and health status in healthcare Mason,
Leavitt & Chaffee (2014). Nurses should education patients about resources in community to assist
with prevent of diseases , they can , take leadership roles in emergency preparedness

of Health Administration (2015–17) 1. INTRODUCTION The shortage of qualified human
resources in the health sector is a major challenge India is currently facing. 18% of the primary
health centers are without a doctor and out of the 52% sanctioned posts for specialists at CHCs that
remain vacant, 55% are for surgeons, 48% are for obstetricians and gynecologists, 55% are for
physicians and about 47% for pediatricians (Rao et al. 2011). As a consequence, the worst hit are the
people from the rural sections and other marginalized communities. Although the proportions may
be different in the case of Kerala, the reality is not quite promising either. The shortage of MBBS
graduates to serve under the National Health Mission on contract in government hospitals is an issue
of concern for the NHM authorities in Kerala (The Hindu 2015). The reluctance of the doctors to
serve in the rural areas is also evident. In situations such as these it is imperative to adopt prudent
alternative courses of action. The Planning Commission's HLEG report suggests that a new cadre of
mid–level practitioners called the BRHC with a 3–year training should be introduced to meet the
growing needs especially in the underserved areas. It is also worth considering what can be done to
the existing HR. Why not utilize

The role of a family nurse practitioner is a fundamental portion of the future of healthcare. The role
is clearly not as understood by other healthcare professionals as needed which results in the
disagreement if the role of a family nurse practitioner is even required for primary care. As people
are getting older, the need for medical professionals that can provide patient care to our ever
growing population increases. The need for the role of family nurse practitioners will grow too. The

The best way that the nurse practitioner will be able to help the patients is to manage the patients
who might have an acute illness. Since the nurse practitioners will need to be able to diagnosis and
treat these illnesses, they are going to need more training than some of the other nurses would.
The Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) is an advanced practice nurse with specialized knowledge in
family focused health care. The FNP is responsible for patient care delivery throughout the lifespan
which includes diagnosing, prescribing and examination responsibilities. As the healthcare field has
taken on more collaborative and integrative initiatives, the need for the advanced practicing nurses
has grown in demand in efforts to offer more timely, efficient, and optimal patient care.
"To continuously improve health care for the public, in collaboration with other stakeholders, by
evaluating health care organizations and inspiring them to excel in providing safe and effective care
of the highest quality and value" (Jointcommission.org, 2015). These requirements are regimented in
the National Patient Safety Goals and are enforced via surveys and internal inspections to ensure
that healthcare institutions abide by the safety mechanisms put in place to facilitate the optimal
patient outcomes and environments. With patient safety as a primary priority, state

What Is Advanced Practice?
What is Advanced Practice? Advanced practice is a term originated from the US, which has
attempted to be defined by many organisations and professions over the past few years; some
definitions being concise whilst others being inexplicit in their approach of outlining the key
concepts of advance practice. Due to these varying definitions, advanced practice has been
inconsistently applied to different job roles in a range of professions. Furthermore, this has led to
confusion about the level of competency and training required as an Advanced Practitioner. The
more advanced practice has evolved, so too has its definition (Lewis 2000). Some of the different
definitions of advanced practice are discussed below. In the UK, it has been suggested ... Show more

This definition by the Central Council provided a benchmark to nurses and other healthcare
professionals as to what was expected of advanced practitioners, but never provided any clarity of
how to apply this in real life practice, leading to confusion as to what was intended by the Council.
This then led to many job roles and posts being labelled as 'advanced practice' but were never
analysed as to whether they actually fitted in line with the definition provided by the Council. The
Council acknowledged this in 1999 and released a summary stating that the standards have not been
set for the preparation of such title holders as above (UKCC, 1999). This then led to
recommendations from other organisations on how to prepare and set standards for the introduction
of these job roles (Bryant–Lukosius et al. 2004). One such example is in the West Midlands, the
Local Health Authority supported 225 students by funding them onto programmes of study for
advanced nursing practice, over a period of 3 years, and evaluating their progress, thereby helping to
provide a set of standards and competencies for this job role (Wilson–Barnett et al. 1999, Dunn and
Morgan 1998). The outcomes of this study indicated some improvements in quality of care to
service users provided by the nurses.

Comparision of the Competencies for Advanced Practice Nurses
Advanced practice nurses have core competencies that are similar or are specific to each
specialization defined as an advanced practice. The profession of nursing presents favorable
circumstances for nurses to specialize in roles with distinct responsibilities and opportunities to
contribute to the function of a health care industry with growing demands and complexity. The
profession of nursing continues to debate to whom the title advanced practice nurse applies to.
Examination of the core concept frame works described by nurse leaders and professional
organizations tend to either support or refute the argument related to the use of the term, advanced
practice nurse for nursing administrators and educators. For the purpose of this paper the author will
explore the core competency similarities and differences of a nurse practitioner and a nurse educator.
Nurse educators and nurse practitioners are registered nurses that possess advanced education, skills,
and experience. Each specialty nurse has defined scopes of practice with distinct sets of
responsibilities, requirements, and skills. Each role represents distinct educational requirements and
activities that contribute to the complex and diverse health care industry.
Nurse educators (NEs) possess competencies such as facilitation of learning, fostering development
of the learner, socialize the learner to integrate behaviors and values within the nursing profession,
use of assessment and evaluation strategies, develop and

Health Policy And Bioethics : Telehealth And Ethical Issues
NUR 562 Health Policy & Bioethics: Telehealth and Ethical Issues As populations around the world
continue to grow, it becomes more evident that health services provided worldwide are not growing
at the same rate and instead will continue to put further strain on existing health disparities, and
create new ones. In the United States alone, access to healthcare is a crucial topic of discussion
principally as the American government continues to create initiatives and legislation such as the
2010 Affordable Care Act. Although, the United States has come a long way to legally create access
to care to all its citizens, there is a disparity in the number of individuals that in actuality receive
healthcare due to the geography of cities and the nation. Presently, telehealth is recognized as the
use of remote healthcare that includes non–clinical services, provider trainings, administrative
meetings, and continuing medical education in addition to clinical services through different modes
of technology over distances (Krupinski, Bernard, 2014). Telehealth, creates an opportunity to
increase access and the quality of care to individuals without general means of transportation and
individuals in rural communities everywhere around the world. Telehealth in conjunction to
advanced practice nursing, also referred to as telenursing, creates an opportunity to make an even
greater impact and make the use of telehealth more feasible in many respects. In the same way

An advanced practice nurse is thought to be intimately linked to advanced knowledge and skill. In
defining the advanced practice nurse and giving insight on the principal foundation of advanced
practice, the International Council of Nurses states that an advanced practice nurse is a registered
nurse who has developed the skilled knowledge base, multifaceted decision making skills, and
clinical proficiencies for extended practice. Completing an advanced nursing degree increases and
develops advanced nursing knowledge. Using this knowledge can help spur change in the healthcare
field by offering healthcare organizations with skilled nursing professionals and ultimately stimulate

This environmental factor could possibly have detrimental effects on this patient's diabetes
management. I was able to refer the household to a dietitian in order to promote healthy habits
among the entire family as well as offer a reliable form of support to my patient. By incorporating
Nightingale's Environmental Theory that states poor environment can lead to poor health outcomes,
I was able to intervene on my patient's behalf in order to increase his compliance with diabetes
management. Being able to incorporate advance knowledge coupled with nursing theory produces
positive health results for patients (Alligood & Tomey, 2010). The significance of clinical leadership
in today's healthcare system cannot be undervalued. Effective clinical leadership has reliably been
identified as a vital element for ensuring quality care and healthy workplaces. Leadership and
ethical decision making skills are important for all advanced practice nurses to possess. I have
gained more knowledge on the benefits of effective leadership and proper decision making skills
during my graduate studies. Being able to take the lead and make effective decisions in a timely
manner can make a significant difference in patient health outcomes. As a nurse in the MICU I have

Advanced Practice Nurse Implications. Spiritual Assessment
Advanced Practice Nurse Implications
Spiritual assessment and care of a patient at each medical or psychiatric appointment is an essential
aspect of providing adequate care by all NPs. To be able to do so, NP must understand that
spirituality and religiosity are not synonymous. Unlike the concept of religion, which defined by the
online Oxford dictionary (2017) as "The belief in a worship of a superhuman controlling power,
especially a personal God or gods," spirituality holds various definitions depending on whom you
ask. According to Taylor (2002; who credits Reed [1992]) "...spirituality refers to that part of being
human that seeks meaningfulness through intra–, inter–, and transpersonal connection (p. 10).

578). de Vries suggests that humility is "mysterious and eludes literal interpretation" therefore it is
"not possible to identify, or grasp, in its entirety the phenomenon of humility" (p. 578). Equally,
Castledine (2011) states, "The trouble with humility is that it is a very humble virtue to have and one
that cannot be easily rated in the same way as other values in life" (p. 527). Likewise, Srokosz
(2013) suggests, "humility is difficult to define and a clear scientific understanding of humility does
not exist yet" (p. 103). Similarly, Crigger and Godfrey (2010) review of literature offer two reasons
for the lack of "scholarly interests in humility": (a) original meaning of the term humble, "narrow
sense of having a low estimation of one's self and being of little value, the notion of humility
conflicts with modern conceptions of the self" and (b) its religious affiliation "may also dampen the
benefit of acquiring or nursing humility, particularly in the US culture..." (p. 311–312).
Notwithstanding, de Vries (2004) examined humility by applying qualitative approach in order to
explore the following two objectives: (a) "To describe how washing feet is a participatory
experience, and (b) "To describe how the experience of washing feet can change the relationship
between nurse and patient (p. 580). Utilizing a sample size of seven post–registered nurses as

NUR 604–QM2: Leadership in Advanced Nursing Practice Roles
School of Nursing
University of Alabama at Birmingham
Fall, 2016
Individual Leadership Assessment Leadership is a very important role for an advanced practice
nurse. There are many leadership styles a person can utilize when working in a collaborative team
environment. It is the responsibility of an advance practice nurse to take on a leadership role and
finding which leadership style to adapt can determine the success of creating a successful work
environment. The purpose of this paper is to analyze different styles of leadership, assess our
emotional intelligence finding our strength and weakness and lastly defining leadership in our own
terms.
Assessing Emotional Intelligence
Having self awareness is a significant attribute to utilize when leading/managing others, interacting
in social events and making personal decisions. Having the insight to distinguish your emotions,
then using that knowledge to manage your behavior and relationships is being emotionally
intelligent (Bradberry & Greaves, 2009). After using the Emotional Appraisal Instrument, I learned
that self–awareness is my strongest emotional intelligence (EI) skill and my weakest EI skill is
social awareness (TalentSmart, Inc., 2016).
In my future role as an advance practice nurse I will be spending my time interacting with patients
discussing their complaints

Concepts Within Nursing And Advanced Nurse Practice...
"The metaparadigm is part of the domain of the discipline" (Turkel, 2013, p.423). Person, health,
environment, nursing, and research are concepts or domains within nursing and advanced nurse
practice discipline. A further question originate the concept of teach, and how this concept can be
part of each domain in the nursing metaparadigm. The concept of teach in the unitary caring
paradigm is the integrality or continuing interaction of human and the environment. In the person
domain, the concept of teach would enhance the quality of knowledge within the person and his/her
community, develop a deeper understanding of learning, forming a diversity of teaching strategies,
increase reflection, and would learn how to deal with environment (Peter et al., 2015). The concept
of teaching in health domain describes the transmission of knowledge from one individual to others.
Teaching is a process, an event that occurs during life's process; it shows to the person 'the whole'
can achieve maximum potential (Tubaishat & Tawalbeh, 2015). "Health education in the community
is guided by transpersonal teaching–learning" (Turkel, 2013, p.425). The nature of teaching depends
on the person's attitude, beliefs, mood, and communication skill to emancipate significant health
promotion, prevention, and maintenance of health. The environment domain reflects teaching
concept as the change of behavior, knowledge, skill, and attitudes that can occur at any time or in
any place. Teaching expands

advancement in nursing practices. In the UK barriers for advanced nursing practice has been

They say that expert advanced practice nursing bridge the gap between the theory and practice.
Advance practice nursing has been applied to variety of roles like Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
(ACNP), Nurse Practitioner (NP), Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS), Certified Nurse– Midwife
(CNM) and Certified Registered Nurse Anaesthetists (CRNA). Even though clinical expertise is the
core ingredient for APN practice, these nurses are expected to demonstrate competencies like use of
holistic perspective, initiation relationship with patients, use of expert critical thinking and use of
diverse health and illness management (AACN, 2006). Additionally they need to express core
competencies like consultation, collaboration, leadership, research and expert coaching (NACNS,
2004). Experienced staff nurses may exhibit these competencies whereas the APN make it visible in
their practices and they are believed to be basic components of every APN (Hamric B, 2009 p 84).
Furthermore a brief consideration of Benner's model is required to understand the acquisition of
expertise in nursing. Benner defines expertise as a mixture of theoretical and practical knowledge
and every APN begins as a novice and ends up with some expertise. A specialist nurse is registered
practitioners who has additional training in a specific area and are recognised to be experienced

range of healthcare services. It has a bed capacity of 2,300 for acute care and is a member of
Adventist Health System (Geetter, et al. 2013). A hospital of this magnitude will provide a platform
for the effective implementation of the set plans in as far as advanced practice role is concerned. The
scenario in this set up is that of a hospital that treats many patients with chronic ailments and
performs cardiology and vascular surgeries on inpatients and those with more acute conditions than
any other hospital in Florida. A case of chronic illness such as diabetes or cancer can be treated with
the level of professionalism it so desires owing to its well–furnished facilities and qualified
practitioners (Geetter & Sussman, 2013). The hospital's annual statistics include: Number of

Translational Research and EBP As an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN), one should
utilize translational research and apply it to the medical field. Knowing the doctorate of nursing
practice (DNP) role in translating evidence is a necessity when implementing solutions to problems
identified in the clinical setting. This paper will describe translational research and will identify and
evidence–based practice (EBP) model to discuss the role of the APRN.
Understanding Translational Research Translational research is a complex subject that can often be
misunderstood by many people. The term can be defined as transcribing research data into clinical
practice (Mulnard, 2011). Translational research is frequently summarized with the phrase "bench–
to–bedside," which essentially means that analytics from the research bench are tested and applied
to new pharmaceuticals and devices for patients (Mulnard, 2011). Ultimately, the research stimulates
the APRN to evaluate the learned science and cultivate new solutions to problems. The
conceptualization of translational research originated in the 1990s in the oncology field (Callard,
Rose, & Wykes, 2012). In 2003, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), led by Dr. Elias Zerhouni,
introduced the "Roadmap for Medical Research" (Mulnard, 2011). The Roadmap for Medical
Research is composed of three components: a) new pathways for discovery, b) research teams of the
future, and c) re–engineering the clinical research

Physical Activity and Hypertension in Young Adults Who Have Been Overweight or Obese Starting
in Childhood Globally the mounting predominance of childhood overweight and obesity is a
significant public health crisis as it is associated with substantial risks that occur in childhood and
gain momentum as the child enters adulthood. In early childhood, pediatric risk factors start to
surface such as hypertension, atherosclerosis, or type–2 diabetes. Hypertension is a principal
cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor internationally, causing heart disease and stroke in many
patients (Gee, Chin, Ackerson, Woo, & Howell, 2013). In addition, in the United States The Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), (2015) states that hypertension is a leading risk factor in
early morbidity and CVD. Statement and Purpose The purpose of the research proposal is to test the
effectiveness of a advanced practice nurse (APN)– led study focusing on physical exercise as a
means to decrease blood pressure measurements in adults between the ages of 20 and 25 who were

Significance of Financial Statements
Financial statements provide financial decision makers with varied information presented in specific
formats that is easily attainable tools to evaluate financial health. Three of the necessary financial
statements are the statement of financial position or the balance sheet, operating statement also
called income statement, and the statement of cash flows (Finkler, Jones, and Kovner, 2013).
The balance sheet (BS) is significant to a business due to its ability to provide a "snapshot" of a
company's assets and liabilities at any given time. This financial document is a cursory
representation of a business's health. The use of comparative BS whether it be yearly, quarterly, or
monthly provides the interested parties a tool to observe trends that are positive, negative, or neutral
to a company's financial health (Finkler, Jones, and Koyner,2013) .
The cash flow (CFS) statement represenst revenue and expenses for a specific period of time
(Sticker, 2012). . The CFS details exactly where cash is being derived and spent and may be
generated at any time for analysis (Finkler, Jones, and Koyner, 2013).
The income statement (IS) also known as the profit & loss statement provides the net gain or net
loss of a business entity. The importance of the income statement is to evaluate profitability of a
company (Finkler, Jones, and Koyner, 2013). The best use of the IS,

There have been concerns regarding the identification and credentialing of advanced practiced
registered nurses (APRNs). AAPRN is a registered nurse who has successfully completed an
accredited graduate–level education program, in which the individual is well prepared and
successfully passed the nationwide certification examination (APRN Consensus Model, 2008).
However, there are still debating issues of who would fall under the APRN category. The National

The Importance Of The Advanced Practice Nurse
Florence Nightingale says that, "For us who nurse, our nursing is a thing which, unless we are
making progress every year, every month, every week, take my word for it, we are going back..."
(Cook, 1914, p. 264). From the time Florence Nightingale practiced nursing, the discipline of
nursing has evolved. Due to the lack of accessibility to health care and expanding health care needs,
the scope of the nursing practice continues to broaden. Because of the rise of scientific knowledge
related to illness and disease process, the advance practice nurse emerged. In 1965, the first nurse
practitioner program was developed. Since that time the need for more formal education and
training has become the norm (Fairman, n.d.). The remainder of this report will review the role of
the advanced practice nurse and how this role delivers comprehensible care, followed by a brief
personal philosophy.
First of all, let us begin by identifying two terms, an advanced practice nurse and a nurse
practitioner. The term advanced practice nurse acts as an umbrella to include an array of terms.
These terms include family nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, nurse anesthetists, and clinical
nurse specialists. The difference between nurse practitioners (NPs) and advanced practice nurses
(APRN) is that NPs can offer a broader range of services to a wider population (Buppert, 2015).
Buppert (2015) states NPs offer:
Wider range of services (evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, education, risk

The Impact Of Nurses And Advanced Practice Registered Nurses
Impact of Nurses and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses
Nurses are the first health care professionals that patients meet in a health care setting. The nurses
have a major impact on the patients. A condition like Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
infection and Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) has a major stigma with it. In the
past, the stigma of HIV/AIDS was higher among people due to the cultural, social, and religious
reasons. The AIDS certified registered nurses and other nurses can help reduce the stigma towards
the patients. Organizations like the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care (ANAC), promote the
health and welfare of the people affected by this condition (Association of Nurses in AIDS care
[ANAC], 2015). This global organization is, of nurses who are in the AIDS care and aim to study
more about AIDS. They conduct community events such as promoting social awareness concerning
issues related to HIV/AIDS. These nurses have the training to help the patients cope with and
manage the different emotional and physical symptoms. They administer treatments to help the
patient's suffering through the different stages of this condition (Association of Nurses in AIDS care
[ANAC], 2015). The Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) play a critical role in
maximizing the effectiveness of the care team. Their care outcomes in the patients with HIV/AIDS
are comparable to the patients managed by the physicians (HIV Medicine Association [HIVMA],
2014).

Roles Of Advanced Practice Nurses
Introduction The roles of advanced practice nurses have been an ongoing debate in many states. In a
globalized world, advance nurse leaders are regarded as forefront leaders that provide first–rate
healthcare to the public. However, the role of new advanced practice nurses is known to be complex.
Advance practice nurses use countless different strategies and nursing theories to improve the
wellbeing of their patient. To improve the well being of all patients, there is a growing demand for
advance practice nurses worldwide. The advanced practice roles of CNM, CNP, CNS, and CRNA
require a toolbox of skills, understanding, and integrative abilities that synthesize advanced practice
nursing knowledge" (Buppert, 2011). With the rapid development of the advance practice nurse
leader, the national organization of Nurse Practitioners are eager to help ensure the competencies of
the diverse roles of APN. In this paper, the author will discuss the 9 NONPF core competencies,
interview an APN leader, discuss APN leader perspective on core competencies, and summarize the
benefits of meeting an APN leader within the APN role. Description of the NONPF NP Core
Competencies Competence is defined as the ability to do something well; the quality or state of
being competent (Bernadette et al., 2014, p. ). The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner's
Faculty is an organization that focuses on developing guidelines for nurse practitioners (NP) and
maintaining program standards nationally.

Using A Standardized Guideline Offers Advanced Practice...
Delivering a baby at 40 weeks gestation is optimal for mother and for baby. Spontaneous deliveries
decrease the incidence of maternal and/or fetal complications (Bingham, Ruhl, & Cockey, 2013).
Exploring ways to decrease elective deliveries that are not medically necessary in the current
obstetric clinic setting is the point of interest. An important step in the reduction of non–medically
necessary inductions is to develop and implement standardized protocols that can be used by all
providers in any setting. The use of a standardized guideline offers advanced practice nurses (APN),
certified nurse midwives (CNM), physicians and other providers a document to reference when
scheduling induction procedures for patients. The World Health Organization (WHO)
recommendations for induction of labor (World Health Organization [WHO], 2011) provides
guidance and offers specific instances of induction, methods used to induce, management of
complications and safe settings for induction. The purpose of this paper is to appraise an existing
guideline to determine if the guideline might be used in the current obstetric clinic as it is written or
if the guideline needs modifications. Importance of Evidence–Based Practice Guidelines in Practice
Evidence–based practice (EBP) guidelines are important in practice because they answer clinical
questions after a rigorous review and grading process. (EBP). The guidelines support interventions
that will help the patient and discourage

Types Of Advanced Practice Nurse
There are four types of Advanced Practice Nurse roles, the nurse practitioner, clinical nurse
specialist, certified registered nurse anesthetist, and certified nurse–midwife. The Family Nurse
Practitioner is the advanced practice role that will be discussed. According to Hamric, Hanson,
Tracy, and O 'Grady (2014) the primary care NP provides care for patients in diverse settings,
including community–based settings such as private and public practices, acute, and long–term care
settings across the life span (pg. 396). Family Nurse Practitioners have faced many challenges in the
medical profession to be recognized as health care providers. Most of these challenges where from
fellow nurses. According to Hamric, Hanson, Tracy, and O'Grady (2014) conflict and discord about
the Nurse Practitioner role continued to characterize relationships between NPs and other nurses
(pg. 18). Despite the resistance to NPs in nursing, physicians increasingly accepted NPs in
individual health care practices (Hamric, Hanson, Tracy, and O'Grady, 2014, pg. 18). Physicians
readily accepted the role of the Nurse Practitioner, working together to improve patient outcomes
and safety. The Family Nurse Practitioner is a clinical role that promotes patient safety. There are
two National Patient Safety Goals in particular that directly relate to the role of the Nurse
Practitioner and patient safety. Goal two, which emphasizes communication and reporting critical
results of tests and Goal three,

Advanced Nursing Role
Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), have a master's degree or higher, advanced practice
training and a certification in their specialty of advanced practice roles (Yeewan, 2015). The roles of
a APRNs consist of certified nurse–midwife (CNM), certified nurse practitioner (NP), certified
registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), and certified clinical nurse specialist (CNS) (Yeewan, 2015).
The best way for Mary to choose is to decide which advanced practice nursing role is right for her.
Mary needs to examine her passion within each roles (Nurse practitioner, Nurse Anesthetist, Nurse
Midwife and Clinical nurse specialist). Before Mary goes any further she should list pro and con
about the roles to help her make her decision.

CRNA is not an excited role and Mary may experience boredom (Texas Wesleyan University, 2015).
Mary may need to take into consideration the CRNA program is not easy to get into and there are a
lot of competition (Texas Wesleyan University, 2015). The rationales for Mary choosing this path is
her pay rate will increase, she will have autonomy in making safety decision for her patients and this
will be the beginning of acquiring new knowledge in a different area.
The rational for Mary choosing this path is, She will still be providing patient care, but in the form
of pain management.
Clinical nurse specialist is also another path Mary can take. The pro of CNS, is Mary will be able to
integrate care across the continuum, and by doing so will influence patients, nurse and the system
(Barile, Munoz, & Hanson, 2016). If she chooses this path, she will be in a position to influence
patients care directly and indirectly and also having that position to improve the outcome of nursing
practices by using evidence–based practices (Barile, Munoz, & Hanson, 2016).
The cons for Mary choosing CNS is their scope of practice are not clearly define so they faces
challenges related to diverse roles, competencies (Barile, Nunoz, & Hanson,

Reflection Paper One
Advanced practice nursing (APN) can be loosely defined as an area of nursing in which nurses are
required to practice at an advanced level in a specific area of interest. APN extends the boundaries
of nursing's scope of practice and contributes to nursing knowledge, and the development of the
profession (Canadian Nurses Association, 2008). In order to become an APN, the nurse must obtain
a master's or doctoral degree from an accredited university in an area of concentration designated for
advanced practice nursing. According to Joel (2009), there are currently four major groups of APNs:
certified registered nurse anesthetist, certified nurse midwives, clinical nurse specialists, and nurse
practitioners. APN focus on ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Future of the advanced practice nurse
With an aging population, and a high demand for primary care providers, a nurse practitioner will
play an important role in serving the elderly population. Unfortunately, it is felt that gerontology is a
specialty not viewed as important as others. According to de Chesney & Anderson, senior
citizens are among the most vulnerable in any society, including the United States (2012). Many
practitioners choose more glamorous or exciting specialties when beginning their careers. With an
increasingly aging baby boomer population, and a demand for primary care givers, a graduate
curriculum tailored for this population would not only raise more awareness and peak curiosity
among new APNs, but also benefit this vulnerable population with a flux of quality primary care
givers. The aging population is an important group we must hold in high regard and advocate for
them that high quality care is obtainable.
In conclusion, the nurse practitioner profession provides many diverse and challenging opportunities
to provide quality patient care, enhance knowledge base, and improve clinical skills. Also important
is the aged population. As this vulnerable group continues to expand, requiring primary care, the
nurse practitioner is a valuable player in the caregiver role. While the NP profession continues to
make advancements in the medical world, NPs will potentially have more

Examining the Role of the Clinical Nurse Specialist in...
Historically, the American Medical Association (AMA) has continuously contended the progression
of nursing practice, in particular advanced nursing practice (Keeling & Bigbee, 2005). They have
done so by opposing the advances of nursing practice claiming the broader and more specialized
roles of advanced practice nurses (APNs), which includes diagnosing and prescribing, encroaches
on physician practice and claim nurses are not educationally sufficiently prepared to take on these
roles (Summers & Summers, 2007). The medical profession posits APNs should be supervised by
physicians in their advance practice roles. Examples of such opposition are evident in for example

This paper will specifically explore the prescriptive authorities for APNs in the State of California
and examine the CNS's inclusion in this policy.
Policy In Question
In the State of California, the Business and Professions Code pertaining to Healing Arts, makes
provisions for Nurse Practitioners (NPs) and Certified Nurse–Midwives (CNMs) to gain prescriptive
authority (CA BRN, 2002, CA BRN, 2010). This policy stipulates this privilege to be accompanied
with the stringent criteria that NPs and CNMs can only furnish prescriptions and medical devices
under the supervision of a physician or under standard protocols sanctioned by physicians. The
California Board of Registered Nursing (CA BRN) along with the State's Business and Professions
Code do not however, advocate for the inclusion of Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSs) amongst those
APNs authorized to be able to furnish (California's legal terminology for "ordering" medications)
prescriptions (CA BRN, 2003).
The only CA BRN policy affecting CNSs and signed into legislation as assembly bill (AB) 90
(Cunneen) in 1998, addresses the minimum educational requirement for the CNS being masters
prepared with a minimum of 500 hours of practicum and the stipulation that no nurse or
organization can utilize the title of a CNS unless it is intended for someone who has actually
fulfilled the requirements (CA BRN, 1998). The policy addresses the CNS's role within the scope of

Nurses And Advanced Practice Nurses
There has always been a debate on the educational requirements for entry–level nurses; whether
beside registered nurses or advanced practice nurses. Continuing education is always time well
spent. What's the big deal with diploma and associate degree nurses being intensely encouraged to
obtain their bachelors? In situations similar to the push towards nurses having their bachelors, there
is always going to be negativity and conflict. Although most will agree that individuals should have
the right to choose what kind of education they want to acquire, does a profession like nursing run
into opposition? The profession of nursing is held to high standards. Patients depend on their nurse
to give them the best care possible. Through the online research this week it's been interesting to
learn the true importance behind the achievement of a Bachelor of Science in nursing. Through this
debate on the educational requirements for entry level registered nurse and advanced nurse
practitioners; it would be best to at least have a Bachelor of Science in nursing to provide patients
with the best care.
Registered Nurses As a nurse the patients are top priority. Nurses are around the patient more than
any other health care worker. The nurse acts as a patient advocate, communicates with the rest of the
healthcare team, and so much more. Whether it's recognized or not, nurses are responsible for more
than just clinical skills taught in nursing school. Patients are not just

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing has identified nine essentials that are incorporated
into master's nursing programs to help direct the practice of advanced practice nurses (APN's).
Essential II outlines how an APN can utilize organizational and systems leadership to promote safer
and more cost effective care. By incorporating effective leadership skills, APN's can help transform
healthcare and make quality improvements for the patient, the institution, and the community.
According to the American Association of College of Nursing (2011), an effective leader assumes
and applies "the skills of communication, collaboration, negotiation, delegation, and coordination"

Credentialing for Advanced Practice Nurses
Three issues or trends I see that are important with regard to credentialing are reimbursement,
malpractice and education. Within each issue are opportunities for the advance practice nurse (APN)
to grow in knowledge and participate in change. It is important to understand why each one effects
credentialing for the APN.
Reimbursement for the advanced practice nurse (APN) is improving but how they fit into
reimbursement systems is vey important. One question that arises is if the APN should be paid the
same fee for service as a physician or should only a percentage of the payment be received. Most
third–party reimburses, which include a few large insurance companies are now reimbursing APNs
and more states are getting on board with reimbursements by developing reimbursement models for
APNs (Hamric, 2009). For example, Aetna US Healthcare, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of
Kentucky, Medicare and Medicate all credential NPs as primary care providers and pay at 85% of
the physician rate. Tricare of Kentucky credentials NPs and pays 100%.
A second issue is malpractice. Malpractice issues are always present in an unstable environment
where patients will seek to remedy an incident if they feel they have been harmed (Hamric, 2009). It
is important to always act in a reasonable way as a health care clinician but unfortunately there are
always those who are negligent in their actions as practitioners.

Introduction
Advanced practice nurses are nurses who possess post–graduate education and training in nursing,
and who have been equipped and prepared with advanced clinical and didactic knowledge, skills,
education, and scope of practice in nursing (Schober, 2017). Because of the increased demand for
care to levels that greatly surpass its provision coupled with the shortage of healthcare professionals,

APN Scope of practice The term scope of practice is used to illustrate the legal authority that is
conferred upon a professional to provide health services and be reimbursed for providing such
services (Hamric, Hanson, Tracy, &, O'Grady, 2014). The scope of practice for the advanced
practice nurse illustrates the requirements and responsibilities that accompany the position. The
scope of practice nurse provides regulations and guidelines for the advanced practice nurse to ensure
that they maintain professionalism and conform to ethical standards whenever they provide services.
The APN practice is founded in scientific evidence and entails many aspects that foster the
enhancement of the nursing practice such as health education, research, mentorship, and leadership.
Just like laws, the APN scope of practice is closely knitted to state and national statuses, and,
therefore, it varies from country to country and from state to state. In Maryland, the scope of
advanced practice nursing is set and regulated by the Maryland Board of Nursing (Maryland. gov,
2016). The board is mandated with regulating the practice, offering certification for eligible
members, ensure that APN's strictly adhere to laws that have been set to govern their performance,
and that the act regulating the profession is aptly followed. The scope of practice is regulated by the

Role Of An Advanced Practice Nurse
The role of an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) is evolving as the shortage of primary care providers
occurs as a result of an aging population and the implementation of Affordable Care Act (ACA)
(Laurant, 2014). The advancement in medical technology, increasing aging population, and the
prevalence of chronic diseases increase the expectation of public in healthcare system. In order to
meet those needs various nursing roles evolved, and all those fall under the umbrella of APN
(Ramis, Wu, & Pearson, 2012). Evidences support the role of APN in reducing patient length of
stay, subsequent hospital costs, and functions as a recruitment strategy to encourage nurses to stay
within the profession (Bauer, 2010). In order to be a successful APN, a nurse needs to have the
advanced knowledge and expertise in the designated area. The APN is one who has advanced
knowledge and skills in meeting the needs of a population with complex and unpredictable health
needs. The skills needed to be successful as an APN is critical thinking, leadership skills, and
clinical judgment in addition to the mastering of core competencies required by the National
Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculty (NONPF). For the purpose of this project I interviewed
Mrs. A.C, who is an APRN for the Cardiovascular Surgeon. The main focus of the interview was to

The Role Of Advanced Practice Registered Nurse
This paper will focus on the role of the advanced practice registered nurse (APRN), specifically
highlighting the family practitioner and the integral role played with the underserved. The focus will
be on a San Diego nurse's journey to become an APRN and her work in giving back to underserved
communities throughout the county. Mary Baker, MSN, RN, CNS, FNP–BC, APHN–BC continues
to contribute to nursing as part of her dedication to serving the underserved.
Historical Perspective
According to the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (N.D.), the progression of the advanced
practice nurse (APN) began nearly 50 years ago. From the advent of the first APN program to the
over 350 accredited programs and over 222,000 certified nurse practitioners in the United States, the
role of the APN has significantly increased and expanded a profession to better improve healthcare
for Americans (American Association of Nurse Practitioners, N.D., American Academy of Nurse
Practitioners, 2016). Of these, more than half are in the field of family practitioners (American
Academy of Nurse Practitioners, 2016).
One such family pracitioner began her journey nearly a decade ago. Following a career in
information technology, Mary Baker completed her nursing degree at California State University
San Marcos in 2009 and continued to pursue her advanced practice nursing degree as a family nurse
practitioner. In 2014, she obtained her national certification as a family nurse practitioner as well as

Advanced Practice Nurses are Registered Nurses with specialty training at the master 's–degree
level, in primary care settings, such as the Nurse Practitioners and Nurse Midwives and acute care of
inpatients, such as the Clinical Nurse Specialists and in operating rooms, such as Nurse Anesthetists.
This has opened a door in the nursing field. Nurses ' roles are no longer limited. Nurses now have
opportunities to advance their career and expand their roles. Advanced Practice Nurses can be more

"They are also more likely to provide disease–prevention counseling, health education, and health–
promotion activities, as well as to know about and use community resources, such as nutrition
programs, self–help or group therapy, and parenting and stress–reduction programs" (Mandelblatt
1993). Clinical Nurse Specialists are also proving that high–quality, cost–effective care can be given
in place of medical care of inpatients who are stable (Knickman 1992).
The role of Advanced Practice Nursing continues to change and develop. In the past few years, state
legislatures authorized Nurse Practitioners to receive direct payment and write prescriptions. These
changes have increased the Nurse Practitioner 's independence. This has resulted in Nurse
Practitioners establishing independent practices that provide the same health care of primary care
physicians, or they can also work in practices where the Nurse Practitioner and the doctor care for
patients together (Spitzer 1974). "Many states are increasing the level of authority and
reimbursement for Nurse Practitioners. Most private insurance companies and health maintenance
organizations cover the services of Nurse Practitioners (Pearson 1993). Some blame the nursing
shortage partly on Advanced Practice Fields. Registered Nurses are obtaining their master 's degree
in order to earn more money and have more opportunities.

An Advanced Practice Nurse ( Apn )

  • 1. An Advanced Practice Nurse ( Apn ) Almost every day an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) will feel the impact of policy and change in the healthcare field, from the institutional, local, community, state and national levels nurses have a responsibility to contribute to the discussion focused on healthcare improvement on all levels. Let's first look at these issues on an institutional level, Often we are faced with changes in policy in our current roles , it could be a new policy or a revision to an old policy , it can be written or a unwritten " understood policy" that everyone follows . We had one of these policies in our clinic, Uninsured or self–pay patients were routed to main campus clinics over 35 miles away because of their uninsured or self–pay status. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This new policy made it easier for the patients to seek care closer to their homes and work and not exhaust their limited funding. The number of uninsured has grown steadily since 2000 in this country. It has increased from 1–2 million with one exception a dip in 2007 and now continues to increase. (Nickitas, Middaugh & Aries) As nurses we must advocate change and implementation of policies that will improve healthcare for this population as well as others. The impact of policy change can also be seen on the local or community level, disparity in access to health care is seen in many communities. In 1985 , The Report of the Secretary's Task force on Black and Minority Health in the United States , took a close look at health disparities among blacks, Hispanic, Asian / Pacific Islander and Native American Indians . This disparity led to an 80% excess of mortality these groups due to such diseases as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, infant mortality, chemical dependency and unintentional injury. A good example of policy change includes nursing taking an active role in breaking that link with social economic status and health status in healthcare Mason, Leavitt & Chaffee (2014). Nurses should education patients about resources in community to assist with prevent of diseases , they can , take leadership roles in emergency preparedness ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Interpreting The Role Of Nurses During Kerala 's Public... Research Proposal Interpreting the Role of Nurses in Kerala's Public Health Care System Name of the Guide: Dr. Mathew George Pallavi Muraleedharan Enrollment Number: M2015HE018 Master of Health Administration (2015–17) 1. INTRODUCTION The shortage of qualified human resources in the health sector is a major challenge India is currently facing. 18% of the primary health centers are without a doctor and out of the 52% sanctioned posts for specialists at CHCs that remain vacant, 55% are for surgeons, 48% are for obstetricians and gynecologists, 55% are for physicians and about 47% for pediatricians (Rao et al. 2011). As a consequence, the worst hit are the people from the rural sections and other marginalized communities. Although the proportions may be different in the case of Kerala, the reality is not quite promising either. The shortage of MBBS graduates to serve under the National Health Mission on contract in government hospitals is an issue of concern for the NHM authorities in Kerala (The Hindu 2015). The reluctance of the doctors to serve in the rural areas is also evident. In situations such as these it is imperative to adopt prudent alternative courses of action. The Planning Commission's HLEG report suggests that a new cadre of mid–level practitioners called the BRHC with a 3–year training should be introduced to meet the growing needs especially in the underserved areas. It is also worth considering what can be done to the existing HR. Why not utilize ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Nurse Practitioner Essay ROLES OF A NURSE PRACTITIONER Sabine Dorsainvil NSG5000 South University The role of a family nurse practitioner is a fundamental portion of the future of healthcare. The role is clearly not as understood by other healthcare professionals as needed which results in the disagreement if the role of a family nurse practitioner is even required for primary care. As people are getting older, the need for medical professionals that can provide patient care to our ever growing population increases. The need for the role of family nurse practitioners will grow too. The role of the family nurse practitioner, the ability of the FNP to be able to transition into their role. The scope of the nursing role has transcended overtime to allow ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The best way that the nurse practitioner will be able to help the patients is to manage the patients who might have an acute illness. Since the nurse practitioners will need to be able to diagnosis and treat these illnesses, they are going to need more training than some of the other nurses would. The Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) is an advanced practice nurse with specialized knowledge in family focused health care. The FNP is responsible for patient care delivery throughout the lifespan which includes diagnosing, prescribing and examination responsibilities. As the healthcare field has taken on more collaborative and integrative initiatives, the need for the advanced practicing nurses has grown in demand in efforts to offer more timely, efficient, and optimal patient care. "To continuously improve health care for the public, in collaboration with other stakeholders, by evaluating health care organizations and inspiring them to excel in providing safe and effective care of the highest quality and value" (Jointcommission.org, 2015). These requirements are regimented in the National Patient Safety Goals and are enforced via surveys and internal inspections to ensure that healthcare institutions abide by the safety mechanisms put in place to facilitate the optimal patient outcomes and environments. • 7. What Is Advanced Practice? What is Advanced Practice? Advanced practice is a term originated from the US, which has attempted to be defined by many organisations and professions over the past few years; some definitions being concise whilst others being inexplicit in their approach of outlining the key concepts of advance practice. Due to these varying definitions, advanced practice has been inconsistently applied to different job roles in a range of professions. Furthermore, this has led to confusion about the level of competency and training required as an Advanced Practitioner. The more advanced practice has evolved, so too has its definition (Lewis 2000). Some of the different definitions of advanced practice are discussed below. In the UK, it has been suggested ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This definition by the Central Council provided a benchmark to nurses and other healthcare professionals as to what was expected of advanced practitioners, but never provided any clarity of how to apply this in real life practice, leading to confusion as to what was intended by the Council. This then led to many job roles and posts being labelled as 'advanced practice' but were never analysed as to whether they actually fitted in line with the definition provided by the Council. The Council acknowledged this in 1999 and released a summary stating that the standards have not been set for the preparation of such title holders as above (UKCC, 1999). This then led to recommendations from other organisations on how to prepare and set standards for the introduction of these job roles (Bryant–Lukosius et al. 2004). One such example is in the West Midlands, the Local Health Authority supported 225 students by funding them onto programmes of study for advanced nursing practice, over a period of 3 years, and evaluating their progress, thereby helping to provide a set of standards and competencies for this job role (Wilson–Barnett et al. 1999, Dunn and Morgan 1998). The outcomes of this study indicated some improvements in quality of care to service users provided by the nurses. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Comparision of the Competencies for Advanced Practice Nurses Advanced practice nurses have core competencies that are similar or are specific to each specialization defined as an advanced practice. The profession of nursing presents favorable circumstances for nurses to specialize in roles with distinct responsibilities and opportunities to contribute to the function of a health care industry with growing demands and complexity. The profession of nursing continues to debate to whom the title advanced practice nurse applies to. Examination of the core concept frame works described by nurse leaders and professional organizations tend to either support or refute the argument related to the use of the term, advanced practice nurse for nursing administrators and educators. For the purpose of this paper the author will explore the core competency similarities and differences of a nurse practitioner and a nurse educator. Nurse educators and nurse practitioners are registered nurses that possess advanced education, skills, and experience. Each specialty nurse has defined scopes of practice with distinct sets of responsibilities, requirements, and skills. Each role represents distinct educational requirements and activities that contribute to the complex and diverse health care industry. Nurse educators (NEs) possess competencies such as facilitation of learning, fostering development of the learner, socialize the learner to integrate behaviors and values within the nursing profession, use of assessment and evaluation strategies, develop and ... Health Policy And Bioethics : Telehealth And Ethical Issues NUR 562 Health Policy & Bioethics: Telehealth and Ethical Issues As populations around the world continue to grow, it becomes more evident that health services provided worldwide are not growing at the same rate and instead will continue to put further strain on existing health disparities, and create new ones. In the United States alone, access to healthcare is a crucial topic of discussion principally as the American government continues to create initiatives and legislation such as the 2010 Affordable Care Act. Although, the United States has come a long way to legally create access to care to all its citizens, there is a disparity in the number of individuals that in actuality receive healthcare due to the geography of cities and the nation. Presently, telehealth is recognized as the use of remote healthcare that includes non–clinical services, provider trainings, administrative meetings, and continuing medical education in addition to clinical services through different modes of technology over distances (Krupinski, Bernard, 2014). Telehealth, creates an opportunity to increase access and the quality of care to individuals without general means of transportation and individuals in rural communities everywhere around the world. Telehealth in conjunction to advanced practice nursing, also referred to as telenursing, creates an opportunity to make an even greater impact and make the use of telehealth more feasible in many respects. Spiritual Assessment Advanced Practice Nurse Implications Spiritual assessment and care of a patient at each medical or psychiatric appointment is an essential aspect of providing adequate care by all NPs. To be able to do so, NP must understand that spirituality and religiosity are not synonymous. Unlike the concept of religion, which defined by the online Oxford dictionary (2017) as "The belief in a worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods," spirituality holds various definitions depending on whom you ask. According to Taylor (2002; who credits Reed [1992]) "...spirituality refers to that part of being human that seeks meaningfulness through intra–, inter–, and transpersonal connection (p. 10). Equally, Castledine (2011) states, "The trouble with humility is that it is a very humble virtue to have and one that cannot be easily rated in the same way as other values in life" (p. 527). Likewise, Srokosz (2013) suggests, "humility is difficult to define and a clear scientific understanding of humility does not exist yet" (p. 103). Similarly, Crigger and Godfrey (2010) review of literature offer two reasons for the lack of "scholarly interests in humility": (a) original meaning of the term humble, "narrow sense of having a low estimation of one's self and being of little value, the notion of humility conflicts with modern conceptions of the self" and (b) its religious affiliation "may also dampen the benefit of acquiring or nursing humility, particularly in the US culture..." (p. 311–312). Notwithstanding, de Vries (2004) examined humility by applying qualitative approach in order to explore the following two objectives: (a) "To describe how washing feet is a participatory experience, and (b) "To describe how the experience of washing feet can change the relationship between nurse and patient (p. 580). Leadership For An Advanced Practice Nurse Individual Leadership Assessment Paper Meta Cristiano NUR 604–QM2: Leadership in Advanced Nursing Practice Roles School of Nursing University of Alabama at Birmingham Fall, 2016 Individual Leadership Assessment Leadership is a very important role for an advanced practice nurse. There are many leadership styles a person can utilize when working in a collaborative team environment. It is the responsibility of an advance practice nurse to take on a leadership role and finding which leadership style to adapt can determine the success of creating a successful work environment. The purpose of this paper is to analyze different styles of leadership, assess our emotional intelligence finding our strength and weakness and lastly defining leadership in our own terms. Assessing Emotional Intelligence Having self awareness is a significant attribute to utilize when leading/managing others, interacting in social events and making personal decisions. Having the insight to distinguish your emotions, then using that knowledge to manage your behavior and relationships is being emotionally intelligent (Bradberry & Greaves, 2009). After using the Emotional Appraisal Instrument, I learned that self–awareness is my strongest emotional intelligence (EI) skill and my weakest EI skill is social awareness (TalentSmart, Inc., 2016). • 21. Concepts Within Nursing And Advanced Nurse Practice... "The metaparadigm is part of the domain of the discipline" (Turkel, 2013, p.423). Person, health, environment, nursing, and research are concepts or domains within nursing and advanced nurse practice discipline. A further question originate the concept of teach, and how this concept can be part of each domain in the nursing metaparadigm. The concept of teach in the unitary caring paradigm is the integrality or continuing interaction of human and the environment. In the person domain, the concept of teach would enhance the quality of knowledge within the person and his/her community, develop a deeper understanding of learning, forming a diversity of teaching strategies, increase reflection, and would learn how to deal with environment (Peter et al., 2015). The concept of teaching in health domain describes the transmission of knowledge from one individual to others. Teaching is a process, an event that occurs during life's process; it shows to the person 'the whole' can achieve maximum potential (Tubaishat & Tawalbeh, 2015). "Health education in the community is guided by transpersonal teaching–learning" (Turkel, 2013, p.425). The nature of teaching depends on the person's attitude, beliefs, mood, and communication skill to emancipate significant health promotion, prevention, and maintenance of health. The environment domain reflects teaching concept as the change of behavior, knowledge, skill, and attitudes that can occur at any time or in any place. Teaching expands ... Advance practice nursing has been applied to variety of roles like Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP), Nurse Practitioner (NP), Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS), Certified Nurse– Midwife (CNM) and Certified Registered Nurse Anaesthetists (CRNA). Even though clinical expertise is the core ingredient for APN practice, these nurses are expected to demonstrate competencies like use of holistic perspective, initiation relationship with patients, use of expert critical thinking and use of diverse health and illness management (AACN, 2006). Additionally they need to express core competencies like consultation, collaboration, leadership, research and expert coaching (NACNS, 2004). Experienced staff nurses may exhibit these competencies whereas the APN make it visible in their practices and they are believed to be basic components of every APN (Hamric B, 2009 p 84). Furthermore a brief consideration of Benner's model is required to understand the acquisition of expertise in nursing. An Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Translational Research and EBP As an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN), one should utilize translational research and apply it to the medical field. Knowing the doctorate of nursing practice (DNP) role in translating evidence is a necessity when implementing solutions to problems identified in the clinical setting. This paper will describe translational research and will identify and evidence–based practice (EBP) model to discuss the role of the APRN. Understanding Translational Research Translational research is a complex subject that can often be misunderstood by many people. The term can be defined as transcribing research data into clinical practice (Mulnard, 2011). Translational research is frequently summarized with the phrase "bench– to–bedside," which essentially means that analytics from the research bench are tested and applied to new pharmaceuticals and devices for patients (Mulnard, 2011). Ultimately, the research stimulates the APRN to evaluate the learned science and cultivate new solutions to problems. The conceptualization of translational research originated in the 1990s in the oncology field (Callard, Rose, & Wykes, 2012). In 2003, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), led by Dr. Elias Zerhouni, introduced the "Roadmap for Medical Research" (Mulnard, 2011). The Importance Of AAdvanced Practice Nurse Physical Activity and Hypertension in Young Adults Who Have Been Overweight or Obese Starting in Childhood Globally the mounting predominance of childhood overweight and obesity is a significant public health crisis as it is associated with substantial risks that occur in childhood and gain momentum as the child enters adulthood. In early childhood, pediatric risk factors start to surface such as hypertension, atherosclerosis, or type–2 diabetes. Hypertension is a principal cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor internationally, causing heart disease and stroke in many patients (Gee, Chin, Ackerson, Woo, & Howell, 2013). In addition, in the United States The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), (2015) states that hypertension is a leading risk factor in early morbidity and CVD. Statement and Purpose The purpose of the research proposal is to test the effectiveness of a advanced practice nurse (APN)– led study focusing on physical exercise as a means to decrease blood pressure measurements in adults between the ages of 20 and 25 who were obese or overweight in childhood, and remain so, and have developed hypertension that can lead to early morbidity. The Importance Of The Advanced Practice Nurse Florence Nightingale says that, "For us who nurse, our nursing is a thing which, unless we are making progress every year, every month, every week, take my word for it, we are going back..." (Cook, 1914, p. 264). From the time Florence Nightingale practiced nursing, the discipline of nursing has evolved. Due to the lack of accessibility to health care and expanding health care needs, the scope of the nursing practice continues to broaden. Because of the rise of scientific knowledge related to illness and disease process, the advance practice nurse emerged. In 1965, the first nurse practitioner program was developed. Since that time the need for more formal education and training has become the norm (Fairman, n.d.). The remainder of this report will review the role of the advanced practice nurse and how this role delivers comprehensible care, followed by a brief personal philosophy. First of all, let us begin by identifying two terms, an advanced practice nurse and a nurse practitioner. The term advanced practice nurse acts as an umbrella to include an array of terms. These terms include family nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, nurse anesthetists, and clinical nurse specialists. The difference between nurse practitioners (NPs) and advanced practice nurses (APRN) is that NPs can offer a broader range of services to a wider population (Buppert, 2015). Spontaneous deliveries decrease the incidence of maternal and/or fetal complications (Bingham, Ruhl, & Cockey, 2013). Exploring ways to decrease elective deliveries that are not medically necessary in the current obstetric clinic setting is the point of interest. An important step in the reduction of non–medically necessary inductions is to develop and implement standardized protocols that can be used by all providers in any setting. The use of a standardized guideline offers advanced practice nurses (APN), certified nurse midwives (CNM), physicians and other providers a document to reference when scheduling induction procedures for patients. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations for induction of labor (World Health Organization [WHO], 2011) provides guidance and offers specific instances of induction, methods used to induce, management of complications and safe settings for induction. Future of the advanced practice nurse With an aging population, and a high demand for primary care providers, a nurse practitioner will play an important role in serving the elderly population. Unfortunately, it is felt that gerontology is a specialty not viewed as important as others. According to de Chesney & Anderson, senior citizens are among the most vulnerable in any society, including the United States (2012). Many practitioners choose more glamorous or exciting specialties when beginning their careers. With an increasingly aging baby boomer population, and a demand for primary care givers, a graduate curriculum tailored for this population would not only raise more awareness and peak curiosity among new APNs, but also benefit this vulnerable population with a flux of quality primary care givers. The aging population is an important group we must hold in high regard and advocate for them that high quality care is obtainable. • 57. Examining the Role of the Clinical Nurse Specialist in... Historically, the American Medical Association (AMA) has continuously contended the progression of nursing practice, in particular advanced nursing practice (Keeling & Bigbee, 2005). They have done so by opposing the advances of nursing practice claiming the broader and more specialized roles of advanced practice nurses (APNs), which includes diagnosing and prescribing, encroaches on physician practice and claim nurses are not educationally sufficiently prepared to take on these roles (Summers & Summers, 2007). The medical profession posits APNs should be supervised by physicians in their advance practice roles. Examples of such opposition are evident in for example AMA's posting of a recent speech given by Nancy Nielsen (2009) stating ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This paper will specifically explore the prescriptive authorities for APNs in the State of California and examine the CNS's inclusion in this policy. Policy In Question In the State of California, the Business and Professions Code pertaining to Healing Arts, makes provisions for Nurse Practitioners (NPs) and Certified Nurse–Midwives (CNMs) to gain prescriptive authority (CA BRN, 2002, CA BRN, 2010). This policy stipulates this privilege to be accompanied with the stringent criteria that NPs and CNMs can only furnish prescriptions and medical devices under the supervision of a physician or under standard protocols sanctioned by physicians. The California Board of Registered Nursing (CA BRN) along with the State's Business and Professions Code do not however, advocate for the inclusion of Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNSs) amongst those APNs authorized to be able to furnish (California's legal terminology for "ordering" medications) prescriptions (CA BRN, 2003). The only CA BRN policy affecting CNSs and signed into legislation as assembly bill (AB) 90 (Cunneen) in 1998, addresses the minimum educational requirement for the CNS being masters prepared with a minimum of 500 hours of practicum and the stipulation that no nurse or organization can utilize the title of a CNS unless it is intended for someone who has actually fulfilled the requirements (CA BRN, 1998). The policy addresses the CNS's role within the scope of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 61. Nurses And Advanced Practice Nurses There has always been a debate on the educational requirements for entry–level nurses; whether beside registered nurses or advanced practice nurses. Continuing education is always time well spent. What's the big deal with diploma and associate degree nurses being intensely encouraged to obtain their bachelors? In situations similar to the push towards nurses having their bachelors, there is always going to be negativity and conflict. Although most will agree that individuals should have the right to choose what kind of education they want to acquire, does a profession like nursing run into opposition? The profession of nursing is held to high standards. Patients depend on their nurse to give them the best care possible. Through the online research this week it's been interesting to learn the true importance behind the achievement of a Bachelor of Science in nursing. Through this debate on the educational requirements for entry level registered nurse and advanced nurse practitioners; it would be best to at least have a Bachelor of Science in nursing to provide patients with the best care. Registered Nurses As a nurse the patients are top priority. Nurses are around the patient more than any other health care worker. The nurse acts as a patient advocate, communicates with the rest of the healthcare team, and so much more. Whether it's recognized or not, nurses are responsible for more than just clinical skills taught in nursing school. Patients are not just ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 63. Advanced Practice Nurses Paper The American Association of Colleges of Nursing has identified nine essentials that are incorporated into master's nursing programs to help direct the practice of advanced practice nurses (APN's). Essential II outlines how an APN can utilize organizational and systems leadership to promote safer and more cost effective care. By incorporating effective leadership skills, APN's can help transform healthcare and make quality improvements for the patient, the institution, and the community. According to the American Association of College of Nursing (2011), an effective leader assumes and applies "the skills of communication, collaboration, negotiation, delegation, and coordination" (p. 11). • 67. Credentialing for Advanced Practice Nurses Three issues or trends I see that are important with regard to credentialing are reimbursement, malpractice and education. Within each issue are opportunities for the advance practice nurse (APN) to grow in knowledge and participate in change. It is important to understand why each one effects credentialing for the APN. Reimbursement for the advanced practice nurse (APN) is improving but how they fit into reimbursement systems is vey important. One question that arises is if the APN should be paid the same fee for service as a physician or should only a percentage of the payment be received. Most third–party reimburses, which include a few large insurance companies are now reimbursing APNs and more states are getting on board with reimbursements by developing reimbursement models for APNs (Hamric, 2009). For example, Aetna US Healthcare, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kentucky, Medicare and Medicate all credential NPs as primary care providers and pay at 85% of the physician rate. Tricare of Kentucky credentials NPs and pays 100%. A second issue is malpractice. Malpractice issues are always present in an unstable environment where patients will seek to remedy an incident if they feel they have been harmed (Hamric, 2009). It is important to always act in a reasonable way as a health care clinician but unfortunately there are always those who are negligent in their actions as practitioners. Education is another issue. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The purpose of this paper is to develop and APN professional development plan. APN Scope of practice The term scope of practice is used to illustrate the legal authority that is conferred upon a professional to provide health services and be reimbursed for providing such services (Hamric, Hanson, Tracy, &, O'Grady, 2014). The scope of practice for the advanced practice nurse illustrates the requirements and responsibilities that accompany the position. The scope of practice nurse provides regulations and guidelines for the advanced practice nurse to ensure that they maintain professionalism and conform to ethical standards whenever they provide services. The APN practice is founded in scientific evidence and entails many aspects that foster the enhancement of the nursing practice such as health education, research, mentorship, and leadership. Just like laws, the APN scope of practice is closely knitted to state and national statuses, and, therefore, it varies from country to country and from state to state. In Maryland, the scope of advanced practice nursing is set and regulated by the Maryland Board of Nursing (Maryland. gov, 2016). The board is mandated with regulating the practice, offering certification for eligible members, ensure that APN's strictly adhere to laws that have been set to govern their performance, and that the act regulating the profession is aptly followed. • 71. Role Of An Advanced Practice Nurse The role of an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) is evolving as the shortage of primary care providers occurs as a result of an aging population and the implementation of Affordable Care Act (ACA) (Laurant, 2014). The advancement in medical technology, increasing aging population, and the prevalence of chronic diseases increase the expectation of public in healthcare system. In order to meet those needs various nursing roles evolved, and all those fall under the umbrella of APN (Ramis, Wu, & Pearson, 2012). Evidences support the role of APN in reducing patient length of stay, subsequent hospital costs, and functions as a recruitment strategy to encourage nurses to stay within the profession (Bauer, 2010). In order to be a successful APN, a nurse needs to have the advanced knowledge and expertise in the designated area. The APN is one who has advanced knowledge and skills in meeting the needs of a population with complex and unpredictable health needs. The skills needed to be successful as an APN is critical thinking, leadership skills, and clinical judgment in addition to the mastering of core competencies required by the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculty (NONPF). • 75. The Role Of Advanced Practice Registered Nurse This paper will focus on the role of the advanced practice registered nurse (APRN), specifically highlighting the family practitioner and the integral role played with the underserved. The focus will be on a San Diego nurse's journey to become an APRN and her work in giving back to underserved communities throughout the county. Mary Baker, MSN, RN, CNS, FNP–BC, APHN–BC continues to contribute to nursing as part of her dedication to serving the underserved. Historical Perspective According to the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (N.D.), the progression of the advanced practice nurse (APN) began nearly 50 years ago. From the advent of the first APN program to the over 350 accredited programs and over 222,000 certified nurse practitioners in the United States, the role of the APN has significantly increased and expanded a profession to better improve healthcare for Americans (American Association of Nurse Practitioners, N.D., American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, 2016). Of these, more than half are in the field of family practitioners (American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, 2016). One such family pracitioner began her journey nearly a decade ago. Following a career in information technology, Mary Baker completed her nursing degree at California State University San Marcos in 2009 and continued to pursue her advanced practice nursing degree as a family nurse practitioner. In 2014, she obtained her national certification as a family nurse practitioner as well as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

"They are also more likely to provide disease–prevention counseling, health education, and health– promotion activities, as well as to know about and use community resources, such as nutrition programs, self–help or group therapy, and parenting and stress–reduction programs" (Mandelblatt 1993). Clinical Nurse Specialists are also proving that high–quality, cost–effective care can be given in place of medical care of inpatients who are stable (Knickman 1992). The role of Advanced Practice Nursing continues to change and develop. In the past few years, state legislatures authorized Nurse Practitioners to receive direct payment and write prescriptions. These changes have increased the Nurse Practitioner 's independence. This has resulted in Nurse Practitioners establishing independent practices that provide the same health care of primary care physicians, or they can also work in practices where the Nurse Practitioner and the doctor care for patients together (Spitzer 1974). "Many states are increasing the level of authority and reimbursement for Nurse Practitioners. Most private insurance companies and health maintenance organizations cover the services of Nurse Practitioners (Pearson 1993). Some blame the nursing shortage partly on Advanced Practice Fields.
