Amputations and hemipelvectomies involve the surgical removal of all or part of a limb or pelvis. Amputations have been performed since ancient times and are now commonly done to treat peripheral vascular disease, trauma, infection, tumors, or burns. The procedure involves creating skin and muscle flaps, controlling nerves and bleeding, and sometimes removing bone. Postoperative care requires a multidisciplinary approach including pain management, wound care, drains, and addressing psychological needs to prevent complications like hematoma, infection, or contractures. Hemipelvectomies can be external or internal and are indicated for certain tumors or sarcomas.
