Stanford and MIT transition to green investments ENGLISH
More universities are deciding to divest from fossil fuel companies and invest in renewable energy as concerns about climate change grow. Stanford was the first major university to announce it would sell $18.7 million in coal stock, followed by MIT which will sell $12.4 billion in stocks from fossil fuel, coal, and tar sand companies. However, some argue divestment may not have a big financial impact and could reduce universities' ability to influence fossil fuel companies to change. Nonetheless, investing in renewable energy like solar could be strategic for universities as prices drop and these industries grow rapidly in the coming decades.

David Ockwell and Robert Byrne (University of Sussex/ STEPS Centre) gave this presentation at King's College London on 25 February 2014 as part of the Environment, Politics and Development Research Group seminar series.
Despite the potential development benefits of low carbon energy technologies, existing international policy has failed to deliver against the needs of low income countries or poor and marginalised people therein. This seminar presents (and seeks feedback on) preliminary findings from a CDKN-funded project on off-grid solar electrical services in Kenya (see http://steps-centre.org/project/low_carbon_development/ ). Utilising the STEPS Centre’s Pathways Approach, it is argued that the failure of existing policy stems from its tendency to frame low carbon development as a problem of financing low carbon hardware transfer to developing countries. Alternative conceptual framings, building on insights from innovation studies and socio-technical transitions, applied to in-depth historical analysis of the successful adoption of off-grid solar in Kenya, suggest neither hardware financing policies nor the free market are likely to result in widespread uptake of low carbon energy technologies amongst poor countries and poor people therein. Instead, interventions should seek to act as “innovation system builders” with an explicit focus on building inclusive innovation systems via a range of specific capacity building approaches.
Dr David Ockwell is a Senior Lecturer in the Dept of Geography at the University of Sussex and co-convenes the STEPS Centre’s energy and climate domain. He’s also affiliated to the Sussex Energy Group and the Tyndall Centre. David’s research focuses on low carbon development with particular recent emphasis on the implications of international policy in terms of poverty and social justice.
Dr Rob Byrne is a Research Fellow in SPRU (Science and Technology Policy Research) at the University of Sussex. He co-convenes the STEPS Centre’s energy and climate domain with David and is also affiliated to the Sussex Energy Group and the Tyndall Centre. Rob’s research focuses on low carbon development with a particular empirical focus on off-grid solar electrical services in East Africa where he has worked both as a practitioner installing solar home systems as well as conducting academic research on this issue
Science And Innovation Policy
Science policy is concerned with creating an environment that promotes discovery and innovation to best serve the public interest, requiring value judgments. Federal science funding competes with other priorities like defense, infrastructure, and entitlement programs. In 2004, the US government provided 30% of public and private R&D funds, with energy R&D receiving $2.5 billion. Research can have both commercial and non-commercial aims, following multiple models, with tough choices around balancing basic and applied research investment levels among national laboratories, universities, and industry.
The future of climate science advice for policy
The document discusses three main challenges relating to climate change: mitigating climate change through reducing emissions, adapting to impacts that are inevitable, and communicating complex climate science information to the public. Chapter 4 - The finance and economics of the Special Report on 1.5°C
This document discusses the investments needed for a 1.5°C pathway compared to current baselines and 2°C pathways. It finds that additional annual energy-related investments of $830 billion to $1700 billion will be needed between 2016-2050. Global abatement costs will be 3-4 times higher than in a 2°C scenario. Infrastructure investments of 0.6% of global GDP or $2.5 trillion annually will also be required to redirect investments towards low-carbon technologies and efficiency. International cooperation on financial reforms, technology, trade and development aid will be critical to enable this transition.

David’s research focuses on low carbon development with particular recent emphasis on the implications of international policy in terms of poverty and social justice.
Dr Rob Byrne is a Research Fellow in SPRU (Science and Technology Policy Research) at the University of Sussex. He co-convenes the STEPS Centre’s energy and climate domain with David and is also affiliated to the Sussex Energy Group and the Tyndall Centre. Rob’s research focuses on low carbon development with a particular empirical focus on off-grid solar electrical services in East Africa where he has worked both as a practitioner installing solar home systems as well as conducting academic research on this issue
Science And Innovation Policy
Science policy is concerned with creating an environment that promotes discovery and innovation to best serve the public interest, requiring value judgments. Federal science funding competes with other priorities like defense, infrastructure, and entitlement programs. In 2004, the US government provided 30% of public and private R&D funds, with energy R&D receiving $2.5 billion. Research can have both commercial and non-commercial aims, following multiple models, with tough choices around balancing basic and applied research investment levels among national laboratories, universities, and industry.
The future of climate science advice for policy
The document discusses three main challenges relating to climate change: mitigating climate change through reducing emissions, adapting to impacts that are inevitable, and communicating complex climate science information to the public. Chapter 4 - The finance and economics of the Special Report on 1.5°C
This document discusses the investments needed for a 1.5°C pathway compared to current baselines and 2°C pathways. It finds that additional annual energy-related investments of $830 billion to $1700 billion will be needed between 2016-2050. Global abatement costs will be 3-4 times higher than in a 2°C scenario. Infrastructure investments of 0.6% of global GDP or $2.5 trillion annually will also be required to redirect investments towards low-carbon technologies and efficiency. International cooperation on financial reforms, technology, trade and development aid will be critical to enable this transition.

However, China faces issues of potential industrial overcapacity in renewable energy and pollution risks from solar panel usage and recycling if maintenance and dumping processes are not properly managed.

This document summarizes The Climate Institute's Global Climate Leadership Review 2013 report. The challenges they face in accessing clean energy are numerous, often dangerous and unsustainable, particularly during complex emergencies and protracted crises.
Safe and sustainable access to energy is being increasingly recognized as a human right — essential for the safety, well-being, and productivity of the people the humanitarian community serves. It is also essential for social and economic development, offering opportunities for improved lives and economic progress.
The series of webinars will present how Safe Access to Fuel and Energy (SAFE) and similar initiatives address this multi-sectoral issue by working to ensure access to fuel and energy for cooking, heating, lighting, and powering for crisis-affected populations. The events will also highlight the synergies and multi-stakeholder approach of these initiatives by inviting key partners to present their role and experience in addressing energy access in emergencies and protracted crises.
The first SAFE webinar will present key concepts and terms related to energy in emergencies and protracted crises, the multi-sectoral risks and challenges associated with the collection and use of traditional biomass fuels and how organizations are coordinating and working together to build resilience by responding to the energy needs of affected populations.
The webinar covers:
• The linkages between energy and food security, nutrition, environment, gender, women’s protection, health and livelihoods as well as other aspects;
• The research and pilot projects implemented through the Moving Energy Initiative led by Chatham House and DFID to help ensure safe and sustainable energy access for displaced populations;
