Alligator Harm
In a breakthrough study that contradict decades of understanding, Louisiana state university researchers has concluded that a person's drunkenness does
not impair the ancient reptiles ability too inflict enormous physical harm. "Our data indicates that human intoxication do not transform an alligator into
a docile creature that enjoys wrestling" said professor Ryder Strong, chair of LSU's prestigious Center for Bullying and Hazing Studies. "Despite it's
slow witted demeanor and tendency to bask motionlessly in the hot sun, its a mistake to believe that an alligator will passively tolerate a half nelson, no
matter how much Southern Comfort is fueling it". Strong said that the study yielded statistics that speak for themselves. "In 10 out of... Show more

Even when armed with an empty tequila bottle. "At best, the bottles bounced harmlessly off the alligator's snout said LSU research assistant Tracy
Sawyer. Also, Sawyer noted that when placed in water, the drunken volunteers fared even worse, while the alligator performed markedly better in
addition, the alligators far outperformed their inebriated human counterparts in the following areas lunging, biting, crushing, dismembering, and
swallowing. According to the study, an alligators characteristic grin should not be interpreted as a lighthearted reaction to the outrageous nerve of an
inebriated human. "Don't let an alligator's easygoing appearance fool you," Sawyer says. "These creatures has no sympathy for drunken pranksters
looking for fun. They are not like black bears." An expert in the field, alligator wrestling is something Strong suggests should be undertaken only by
professionals. For drunkards interested in proving there mettle with alligators, the researchers proposed certain guidelines. Instead of baiting an
alligator, they suggest seeking another form of drunken recreation, such as: attending a strip club, burning a pile of tires, calling an ex–girlfriend, or

Self Harmers
Self–Harmers Should Have to See a State Ordered Therapist Self–Harmers Should Have to See a State Ordered Therapist
Did you know that 1 in 12 teenagers will engage in some form of self harm. We have noticed these stats have been on the incline for many years
now. We are able to handle only when the person is willing to admit that they themselves have a problem. My Stance on this topic is. Self Harmers
should have to seek therapy from a state ordered therapist and if their behavior continues see about being put in a mental ward.
Most self harmers start at the age of 12–14. Most of the people that are female with one out of every five females will commit to self harm, while one
out of every seven males will commit to self harming themselves. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some of these disorders are eating disorders, depression, anxiety and addiction. We often shun people who have these disorders, but in reality they
are the people who need to most support. If we checked in on these people the chances of them self harming would in my opinion decrease. Like I
mentioned before in paragraph 3 most people will not self harm with the intention of suicide when they start, but some people get addicted to the minor
pain and the endorphins that are released from the pain that makes people relaxed and happy. We can compare this to a runners high when you have the
most energy. At this point if they are addicted for this reason this is the perfect time to start a treatment

This paper will discuss the principles and position of harm reduction. It will also examine the public perception of the user, which has created an
ineffective philosophy. Most importantly, my paper seeks to recognize the harm ofharm reduction. This discussion will highlight the lack of hope it
creates in the user. Harm reduction needs to be addressed so that a long–term solution for the user can be implemented, not just a quick fix Band–Aid
solution. If caregivers, counselors and the general public do not hold more of an abstinence position on recovery they will eventually do users a
disservice. I will touch on needle exchange, safe injection sites, wet ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The idea behind the creation of safe injection sites is that society can't cure or get rid of the drug problem. While harm reduction may work for those
not effected directly with the damages of drug use, it encourages out of sight, out of mind compartmentalization of people who unconsciously don't
want to help the addict. This results in the addict staying in his addiction. It seems to me that such an approach is much like facilitating drug use,
which is illogical. The fact is we can't stop rape either but we don't resort to lowering the consequences and give ways to do it. There is a concern
that the users sharing straws to snort cocaine will spread Hep "C". So, should we also create a straw exchange program? There will always be
something that will cause harm with drug use.
We also have to ask if we are in line with Canada's Drug Strategy definition of harm reduction, which, in general, is to lower sickness, death, social
misery, crime, violence and economic costs. Has it reduced the harms associated with alcohol and drugs to individuals, families and communities or is
the drug still in control? Some effects of drugs are too powerful to manage. Paranoia, a common effect of cocaine use, can cause violent and erratic
behavior. Sometimes users experience 'coke bugs': imaginary bugs crawling over their skin. Heroin causes euphoria, which is followed quickly by
sadness,

John Stuart Mill The Harm Principle
John Stuart Mill was an English philosopher and a progressive in British politics during the 17th century. He lived during a time of political
transformation in England caused by the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution brought social mobility to the middle and lower class, along
with more political participation. With this newfound freedom, the people of England felt their liberties were being diminished because they had the
ability to accomplish all the more but in some cases, could not. This was just one question of liberty brought up during the time Mill was developing
intellectually (Sparks 186). Mill wrote many works that trifled with the idea of gender equality, government structure, and economic principles, to name

The largest and arguably most influential point Mill makes in his essay is that the harm principle does not only apply to the government anymore but
to all of society. In making this argument he is defining societal values in that it shaped areas in which society must respect personal liberties. He
constructs his statement on how the harm principle is applied to society in three parts. His first assertion pertains to the liberty of one's own mind.
He states, "the inward domain of consciousness; demanding liberty of conscience, in the most comprehensive sense; liberty of thought and feeling;
absolute freedom of opinion and sentiment on all subjects, practical or speculative, scientific, moral, or theological" (Mill 20). In saying this, Mill
means that a person's liberty cannot be persecuted if they never act on them. Any thoughts a man may have are his own thoughts and he may think
whatever he would like to think. This has shaped societal values because no one is truly obligated to share what they think today, nor is it a societal
norm to criticize one's opinions if they differ from your own but it does happen. His second statement addresses the control one individual can have
over another. He claims that an individual can plan their life as they please, and should not be met with the pressure of what others may see as being
abnormal (Mill 20). By saying this, Mill expresses the

John Stuart Mill's Work
John Stuart Mill's work provides a valuable insight to the issue of medicine that harm people in the classical utilitarian. Many people consider that
prescription for medical marijuana as a moral sin or something that should be given to help the patients to improve his/her bad condition. As a majority
of people and federal consider prescription for medical marijuana is immoral and it is restricted in many states including Texas. In the section on liberty,
John Stuart Mill introduces the harm principle. Mill believes that "The only legitimate ground for social coercion is to prevent someone from doing
harm to others". (John Stuart Mill handout, Principle 1). It means that everyone should have their own individual liberty to think as they satisfy
unless their actions or decisions may not cause harm to others. I am cancer patients, in first stage. Doctor can cure my disease; doctor gave
prescription for medical marijuana. However, I live in a Texas, where medicine is legal but federal government do not give permission to use medical
marijuana, which is somewhat unfair to me and other cancer patients. Here people are minority group and majority people do not to listens minority
group. Federal government has a reason behind to make Marijuana medicine illegal but according to Mill, if that medicine does not harm others and
helpful to cancer patients, then it should not be illegal. Mills also believe that a person should be given the freedom to form

John Stuart Mill Harm Principle
A central belief of the liberal atmosphere on which western legal systems are fundamentally based is that of negative freedom, to do as one wills,
provided that it causes no harm to others. But a question which goes to the heart of the ethics of allowing total individual freedom with minimal
intervention from society can be characterized like so; where to draw the line between freedom and condemnation? When is interference with
individuals and their private morality justified? The harm principle, which seeks to introduce personal liberty and its coexistence with society, appears in
John Stuart Mill's "On Liberty", first published in 1859. However, the idea is not black and white – the harm principle can be criticized for its
excessive paternalism, lack of clarity, and incomplete handling of certain situations. In this essay, I will argue that Mill thoroughly justifies his theory
for the harm principle. To make this argument, I will examine the harm principle, evaluate possible counterarguments, then apply the Harm Principle to
a real–life scenario.
I will first examine Mill's "Harm Principle", as well as his reasoning for it. The principle itself reads as follows:
"The sole end for which mankind are warranted, individually or collectively, in interfering with the liberty of action of any of their number, is
self–protection. That the only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to

Social Harm
Explain how the notion of social harm is connected with ideas of social justice. Support your answer with evidence from two study weeks in Block 2,
including at least one chapter from Book 1.
This essay aims to explain social harm and its connections to social justice. The concept of social harm is difficult to define, Social harm occurs
when problems not only affect an individual but for cause harm to society as a whole. World issues such as discrimination, racism and poverty are
classed as social harm, and are also easily linked to the concept of social justice.
Social justice refers to the distribution of wealth and resources and is a concept which has often lead to mobilisation. Often, occurrences such as natural
disasters whilst causing their own harm to society highlight hidden social harm such as poverty and discrimination, it is once these underlying issues
have been highlighted that moblisation occurs and social justice becomes linked with social harm.
Harm can be an ambiguous term, creating an entanglement between harm and crime; crimes such as rape and domestic violence cause harm to
individuals, whereas psychological harm such as race, discrimination or hate crimes, when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Self Harm In Canada
Self harm is an mental health issue that not a lot of people know about. Self harm is "...the act of deliberately harming your own body, such as cutting
or burning yourself" (www.mayoclinic.org). It is an issue that people do not like to talk about and especially in schools. Statistics showed that in
2014, 110% of teen girls per 100,000 self–harmed; and it has increased from 23% to 35% that teen boys self–harm (Michelle). Overall, about 15% of
Canadian teenagers self harm (Kids Help Phone). Although many teenagers self harm, people do not think about if adults self harm. Statistics showed
that in 2006, 54% of adults between the ages of 30 and 64 self harmed (Public Agency Of Canada). Those who self harm may be suicidal, but they do

People who self harm just want to escape from reality and they do not want to face their depression or anxiety; it is a way for them to cope with
stress. Self harm is not considered to be its own mental health condition and doctors believe it is to be caused by depression and/or other mental health
illnesses such as obsessive compulsive disorder. Many things can cause someone to self harm such as self–anger, self–hatred, cope with negative
feelings, and to even just feel better (Canadian Mental Health Association). Although those who hurt themselves do not want to end their lives, it can
be a sign of a suicidal attempt in the future. It is hard to tell if some self harms and family/friends are surprised when they find out that their loved
one hurts themselves. Some of the many symptoms of self harm include scars on their body, wearing long sleeved clothing in the summer or hot
weather, and spending much of their time alone (Mayo Clinic). There are other symptoms of self harm that do not involve hurting one's self with a
razor or blade (Help Guide). Self harm does not only affect the one who is doing it, but also the family and the ones around the self

While not every client will use self–harming behaviors to deal with emotional pain, I feel that the knowledge of these behaviors will be important in
the field of helper that I am aspiring to work in. Self–harm can also be called self–injury, self–inflicted violence, or self–injurious behaviors. These
names refer to a spectrum of behaviors where injuries are self inflicted. Self–mutilation can also be used to describe these behaviors but this term can
be offensive. In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders self–harm is a symptom of borderline personality disorder only and does not
have a diagnostic criteria. Not everyone who self–harms suffers from a recognized form of mental disorder, but many people who have been diagnosed
have a higher risk of self harming. Whether I chose to work in the field of social work or go on and work in a psychiatry field I will have clients who
suffer from mental illnesses and the more I can know about their suffering and symptoms will help me to be better in my chosen field. I want to be
able to do whatever I can to empathize and understand about the ways my clients are suffering. Suicide is not the intention of people who self–harm, but

Should the government only restrict an individual’s...
In a democratic society, it is generally considered the Government's role to promote morality and justice within its citizens and seek to restrict
supposedly immoral and unjust acts. Thus if an act is to be considered immoral, it seems obvious to suggest that the government is justified in
restricting it regardless of whether it is harmful to others. However, since everybody has a different understanding of morality and freedom, no
Government could legitimately restrict an act on the basis of it being 'immoral'. Thus it seems more plausible to suggest that the Government should
only restrict actions which everybody can agree should be restricted. However it's not clear where the line should be drawn or how a consensus on the

While Mill is clear that offence is not sufficient to be considered 'harm', he does seek to ban some things which may merely be offensive such as
public indecency. He doesn't give explicit examples in this instance, merely that there are some things which are acceptable in private, but when
performed in public go against the general concept of 'good manners'. While this notion may be agreeable to some, it's difficult to justify given
Mill's other beliefs surrounding harm. There are many acts which may be accepted in public by some and not others, for many there is little wrong
with homosexuality being exhibited in public, but for others even the mere thought of it being practised in private causes them great distress.
Although it's not obvious where the line should be drawn in terms of public indecency, it seems obvious that everybody has a limit as highlighted by
Joel Feinberg (offence to others). Feinberg used a thought experiment concerning a ride on a bus in which the people around you begin to perform
slowly more intolerable acts beginning with mere horrible smells and concluding with sexual acts being performed on an animal. This demonstrates
that if we wish to accept making sex acts with an animal on a bus illegal, we may not be able to argue for it without also legitimising a restriction on
other more mundane acts of public indecency such as picking your nose. Although Mill didn't explicitly state where he would have drawn the line in

Personal Statement On Self Harm
Self–harm patients are at a risk for suicide whether this is an intended outcome or a result of self–harm gone wrong. 25% of people who commit
suicide will have been seen in a hospital setting for a self harm injury in the past 12 months (Emerson, 2010). As well, 72% of suicide victims under
the age of 25 have had a history or self–harm behavior (as sited in Cook, Clency, Sanderson, 2004). These statists provide a strong argument for the
importance of vigilance and ongoing monitoring when providing care for clients who display self–harm behavior. This paper will argue the importance
for close monitoring when caring for self harm but not necessarily the prevention of self harm itself. Vigilance and monitoring are important However
there is evidence that complete preventions is not necessarily the best approach to self–harm (Duffin, 2006).
The Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders fifth edition (DSM–5) uses the term non suicidal self–injury. Self–injury is defined as
"intentional self inflicted damage to the surface of his or her body of a sort likely to induce bleeding, bruising, or pain, with the expectation that the
injury will lead to only minor or moderate physical harm"(American psychiatric Association, 2013,p803). There must be an absence of suicidal intent;
this is either stated by the patient, or determined by the fact that the method of harm is not likely to result in death. Although often misunderstood and

Bleeding out. Scarred from head to toe. These are a couple of side effects of self–harm inflicted by adolescents. Some mental causes for self–harm are
depression, anxiety, and mood disorders. Self–harm is currently a major concern, and there have been many moves recently to combat it. Two of the
more significant treatments developed that assist adolescents with their self–harming behaviors are Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical
Behavior Therapy (DBT) (Laye–Gindhu & Schonert–Reichl, 2005). Before discussing these treatment options, an understanding of what self–harm
truly means is crucial. "Self–harm, [is] defined here as deliberate and voluntary physical self–injury that is not life–threatening and is without any
conscious suicidal intent" (Laye–Gindhu & Schonert–Reichl, 2005, p. 447). "According to population studies, between 5% and 10 % of adolescents
report past–year self–harm" (Mehlum, et al. 2016, p. 1082). Some of the more well–known forms of self–harm are "cutting, hitting, biting,"
(Laye–Gindhu & Schonert–Reichl, 2005, p. 453) and other non–suicidal actions – scarifications are among more publicly–recognized type. Adolescents
hurt themselves in these ways because it gives them a way to physically deal with the emotions they experience; this makes sense, since inflicting

personality, substance use, and sense of relatedness" (Courtney & Flament, 2015, p. 538) would result in a predicted response to the treatment

Harm Principles
In order to begin discussing how lawmakers can legitimately draw a line between permitted and criminal activity there are two principles which
need to be defined and acknowledged, the harm principle and the offense principle. The harm principle, initially created by John Stuart Mill in his
essay On Liberty , is heavily centred around the protection of society. According to Mill, the only sufficient reason to criminalise certain behaviours
and activities is if it causes harm to members of the society or society as a whole, harm to oneself is not a strong reason to criminalise behaviours as
we have a right to individual autonomy. The modern harm principle used now is Joel Feinberg's adaptation of Mill's ideas, he stated that 'the need to

The fact that it is a psychological disorder that causes individuals to want to amputate their limbs may be a sufficient reason to criminalise those who
carry out the procedure of amputating a person's healthy limbs as in essence they are not actually able to give an informed consent particularly if one is
following the guidelines laid out in the Mental Capacity Act 2005 meaning that it can be concluded as the bodily harm of mentally ill patients. Muller
raises a case against amputation based on the principle of autonomy. On the one hand autonomy can be used to argue for the rights of body
modifications like for plastic surgery for aesthetic or sexual purposes but on the other hand the autonomy of BIID patients is heavily doubted.
Autonomy requires insight, free will and rationality, those suffering from a neuropsychological condition cannot be classified as autonomous and thus
performing an amputation on them should be prohibited. This then turns the attention to those who do not suffer from a medical

The Inclination of Today’s Youths Towards Self-Harm
Many teenagers are suffering a hidden pain in the privacy of their homes. They secretly cut, burn, scratch, pull hair, and bruise their bodies. The
psychosis is termed non–suicidal self–injury (NSSI).Teenagers are feeling pressures from typical insecurities of low self–esteem, body image, fashion
trends, bullying, pressures from friends, and family issues. As a result, teens are turning to the internet for strategies of how to deal with the pressures
of life, making this topic more of a public enigma, than a private suffering issue. NSSI is a growing phenomenon and parents and psychologists should
advocate safe internet sites, and force social media outlets to provide links for teens to access healthier ways to manage their emotions.
NSSI behavior is on the rise and is more prevalent among our youth today; due to images, other teens upload on the internet. Today many teens are
accessing self–harm images and content on the World Wide Web
, through YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram. The images are of the cuts and burns
that others have inflicted on themselves, while others are of diagrams depicting where to cut, that parents and teachers will not notice. Some teens will
use self–injury to try to relieve their feelings of anxiety and pressures they are feeling in their lives. According to Caitlin Dewey, in an article from The
Washington Post, an issue with internet sites is that they promote the activity as normal and healthy, therefore encouraging teens to continue injuring

John Stuart Mill The Harm Principle
This essay will discuss John Stuart Mill's Harm Principle and his views about paternalism in relation to whether the New Zealand government should
prohibit the non–therapeutic use of cannabis in New Zealand. Taking advantage of available research, along with discussion of the Harm Principle, this
essay will argue that non therapeutic use of cannabis in New Zealand should not be prohibited.
John Stuart Mill's Harm Principle is the idea that, "The only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized
community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others.'' 1 In other words, the state or society at large may only interfere in an individual's life if that

It is not meant to be applied to children or individuals "in a state of excitement or drunkenness unable to reflect such competency at that moment".1
John Stuart Mill's position on paternalism is an aspect of the Harm Principle. Weak paternalism concerns the intervention in individuals' lives who do
not meet the requirements to be considered autonomous or competent. In essence, the Harm Principle and weak paternalism are aimed at two different
parts of society.
In New Zealand, the government is currently interfering in its citizen's lives by prohibiting the recreational use of cannabis. This interference largely
affects mature and rational decision makers. In this case the Harm Principle does apply. We need to ask, what is the alleged/predicted harm from the
recreational use of cannabis? Is it probable or certain and is there any physiological and or psychological

Society may use public opinion to monitor conduct that "may be hurtful to others or wanting in due consideration for their welfare, without going to

The harm principle can work affectively if private harm, doesn't involve self–harm or future harm to oneself or others on any level. The harm principle
also addresses to "inactions" or "omissions" resulting in society having a duty to get people to perform actions that can prevent harm to others. For
instances helping others under certain circumstances, saving someone from drowning, rescuing someone from dangers that possible wont harm
yourself in the process. Harm and morality go hand in, Mill argues that many of the rules of morality are based on the principle of utility. We allow
some actions that harm other people but those are in general interests are morally permissible for example, economic competition. Some are harmed by
the loss of money of a business. Morality to an extent helps us decide whether or not to allow harmful action. On the other hand, if the action harms
others but is not categorized as immoral then it shouldn't be interfered with. There are actions that are immoral that can't harm others, e.g masturbating
laws, sexual preferences, being promiscuous within a marriage. There are other personal traits of character that can only harm the person, such as being
selfish, argumentative, disloyal etc. The public can have personal opinions towards that certain individual but that all together is a different situation.

not show any compassion or even attempt to understand what those who self–harm are truly going through, because in their eye's it's just a cry for
attention. And if someone is so willing to cause themselves harm, just to receive attention, they might have a mental disorder that has yet to be treated.

Harm Reduction Essay examples
"Harm reduction is based on the premise that people are responsible for their behaviour, that they maker personal choices that affect their health and
well–being, and that they can make safer and better decisions if given useful and honest information" (Mathre, 2002, p. 106). Harm reduction
recognizes people's unhealthy choices while also attempting to reduce the harmful effects that come from these unhealthy behaviours (Marlatt, 1998 as
cited in Brown, Luna, Ramirez, Vail, and Williams, 2005). Using aharm reduction approach has a positive effect on drug users, as it helps to reduce the
negative consequences that come from using drugs. Although harm reduction aims to reduce the harm from illegal drug using, it is viewed as ... Show

Although these clients will still be abusing illegal substances, Sheon (2004) indicated that any reduction of harm is a step in the right direction, and the
amount of success is measured by the client's quality of life and well–being (as cited in Brown et al., 2005). "Harm reduction is about being respectful
in somebody else's world" (Georgina Perry, Service manager and co–author, England as cited in Cusick et al., 2010). By not respecting somebody else's
choices, the clients feel they must lie about their unhealthy lifestyles, which prevents the clients from getting assistance because they were trying to
protect themselves from the real situation (Georgina Perry, Service manager and co–author, England as cited in Cusick et al., 2010). A way to reduce
the harm from illegal substance abuse is clean needle exchange, and teaching clients how to properly inject themselves (Brown et al., 2005). The
needle exchange is a program where clients exchange their used needles for clean ones, which helps reduce the spread of diseases such as HIV/AIDS
(Brown et al., 2005). With continuation of these programs the harm from abusing illegal substances is reduced and the spread of life threatening
diseases, such as HIV,

Do No Harm
An article from The New York Times, "On Assisted Suicide, Going Beyond 'Do No Harm'," addresses the issue of physician assisted suicide. This is
an issue that affects the entire world, and there are a vast difference of opinions on it. Physician assisted suicide involves a doctor knowingly and
deliberately providing a person with the information or means, or both, essential to commit suicide. This includes counseling about lethal doses of
medications, prescribing lethal doses and/or supplying the medications. However, even as assisted suicide has gained broader support, the ones most
strongly opposed to it hasn't shifted: doctors. So what is meant by "do no harm?" This is a huge topic of debate in the United States.

Many believe legalization of assisted suicide would eventually lead to acts reminiscent of Nazi Germany. So far this has not been noted in any of the
countries where it has been legalized. We are also told that assisted suicide laws will allow physicians and nurses to avoid providing quality palliative
care to patients, which also remains to be seen.
The article states that with the right safety measures in place, assisted suicide can help give terminally ill patients a sense of control over their lives as
extreme pain and illness torture them. It suggests that instead of using our energies to convince patients who might want to end their lives while
terminally ill or suffering horribly, physicians need to reassess how they can help patients achieve their goals when the end is near. We should be able
to offer options for those who wish for assisted suicide, so that they can take control of their own death.
The author of the article feels that instead of looking for guidance from ancient proclamations, we need to re–evaluate what patients face in modern
times. Even if it is a path we personally wouldn't recommend, we should allow patients suffering from painful and debilitating disease the

The Despairing Act of Self Harm Essay
Have you ever, coincidentally, walked passed somebody with deep, open cuts on his/her wrist and wondered what happened? Maybe, you thought it
was a simple, harmless scratch caused by obnoxious pets at home. Or maybe, you considered it as mild accidents, preferably caused by doing arts and
crafts at home or school. But, have you ever pondered thoroughly and have the idea that those sad scarring were actually made by him/herself?
Creating scars on your skin is actually the action of self–harm; the intentional hurting of one's self, direct to the body tissue, with or without the
intention of suicide. There are several types of self–harm, such as hair pulling, banging body parts, scratching, burning, ingestion of toxin, and the most

Though, there are several motives of self–harm, a person who self–harms by any means seeks the same personal effects: a sense of relief, a diversion
from hurtful emotion by expressing it externally, or to simply sense something when feeling numb and empty. Adolescents and teenagers expects
self–harm as an escape, as a way out of struggles. However, self–harm bears great consequences to those who practice it. As a matter of fact, it has
never been a solution to complications. The truth is, self–harm only gives temporary satisfaction, and provokes to further misery and discomfort.
Self–harm brings several damages; it affects both one's mind and physical features. Damages of self–harm involves:
Permanent, painful scars
Inability to bring an end to it or addiction
Feeling useless
Self–hatred or low self–esteem
Permanent numbness in hand or wrist
Broken bones and bruises
Stress to hide the self–injury from others
Anxiety that someone will discover it
Secluded from society
Although there are a number of after effects, the worst that could happen to one's life is death. When a person became too dependent on self–harm, he
/she could have the desire to take his/her own life. Regardless its familiarity in the midst of teenagers today, God has always ruled against self–harm.
Believe it or not, self–harm has been around for centuries. The false worshippers of Baal in the Old Testament cut themselves as an

Self–harm is a growing and troubling trend. It's a frightening disorder, most common among women, where hurt and alienation are expressed by
injuring oneself. There are several kinds of self–harm. Self–mutilation and various eating disorders are among the most common forms of
self–destruction. These forms of self–harm often lead to suicide. There are three types of self–mutilation. The rarest and most extreme form is Major
self–mutilation. This form usually results in permanent disfigurement, such as castration or limb amputation. Another form is Stereo–typical
self–mutilation. This usually consists of head banging, eyeball pressing, and biting. The third and most common form is Superficial self–mutilation.

Meaning Of Harm
To have a genuine of the meaning of "harm", it is simply something that causes someone to be hurt. Although, the harm created that is usually harmful
to people, can very likely be harmful to the environment, as well. The principle that prevents harming others is linked to the idea of environmental
protection and the safety of people involved. Despite the fact, in both environmental protection, and product and worker safety cases, there is often the
possibility of people justifiably accepting some harm for greater good, and especially of accepting the risk of some possible harm for the attainment of
some assured good. (DeGeorge, 272) Harm is undeniably something to pay close attention to but it can vary between countries, times and conditions....

Liability for one's actions means that one can rightly be made to pay for the adverse effects of one's actions on others. (DeGeorge, 104) Liability
does not necessarily involve moral responsibility for the action taking place, although. "Strict liability" stresses that there is no excusing conditions
that are accepted or applicable. It is the responsibility placed on somebody who did not act negligently. For example, consider selling a product that
has defective problems. You did not intentionally make it defective but you are held liable for it, even though the seller did not intend to have it
defective. Corporate liability is different because it is formed to limit the liability of shareholders. It determines the extent to how much they are liable
for, unlike strict liability. The corporation can be punished or prosecuted if actions were done for benefits, results from negligence, or due to lack of

Self-Harm, Self Injury, And Nonsuicidal Self Suicide
Self–harm, self–injury, and nonsuicidal self–injury (NSSI) are all terms that describe the act of intentional infliction of tissue damage or pain to oneself
without the intent of dying by suicide (Briere & Gill, 1998; Andover et al., 2005; Nock & Favazza, 2009; Klonsky, 2011; Young & Stark, 2011;
Makowska et al., 2016). The cases of self–injury has doubled over the past ten years in adolescents (Makowska et al., 2016). Self–injury is
experienced by 4% of the general population, however, self–harm was reported by 21% of individuals in clinical settings, and those individuals
reported the behavior is often done compulsively or repetitively (Briere & Gill, 1998).
Studies have found that individuals with severe mental illnesses are more likely to engage in dangerous behavior including self–injury and suicide
attempts;, and people diagnosed with schizophrenia and mood disorders have the highest rates of suicide among all mental illnesses (Klonsky, 2011;
Victor & Klonsky, 2014; O'Hare et al., 2015). The DSM–5 classifies Nonsuicidal Self–Injury as a separate diagnostic criteria (American Psychiatric
Association, 2013; Klonsky, 2011), suggesting that self–injury itself is considered a mental illness.
Although most individuals who self–injure do not have the intent to die by suicide, some experience suicide ideation; and instances of self–harm in
individuals contemplating suicide could be a trial of self–destructive behavior, which could lead to attempting suicide (Briere & Gill,

The study provides evidence that several of the hypothesized risk factors for self–harm (sexual abuse, child separation, etc.) warrant further
consideration. Most researchers have examined the relationship between childhood trauma and self–harm behavior, concluding that early trauma is a
factor within the development of self–harm. It is said discussing info regarding frequency, age, areas of the body injured and degrees of relief are
crucial to discuss. Predictors of self–harm are said to be: insecure attachment, childhood separation, emotional neglect, sexual abuse, and dissociation.
133 undergraduate students were included in this study, 67% being female and the rest male. The study involved multiple self–report questionnaires
such as the deliberate self–harm inventory to assess various aspects of DSH as well as abuse frequency.
Results displayed very shocking findings, where 38% of the sample reported a history of DSH with 18% of the group harming themselves more than
10 times in the past. Majority of the risk factors the authors hypothesized for self–harm were significantly correlated with the frequency of DSH.
Women were shown to have high levels of insecure parental attachment, whereas the men had childhood separation issues. The DSH inventory showed
the frequency of self–harm being positively skewed. Physical abuse and childhood separation were the two variables that stood out on the API
inventory, with 35 people reporting physical abuse and 41 reporting childhood separation.
Lack of parental emotional neglect may show a history of emotional overinvolvement, which is a factor that could also increase the risk for self–harm.
Gratz et al., (2012) failed to go into further detail of how emotional neglect could correlate with self–harm at a later age. But besides that, one limitation
of this study is about the methods used; it offers no way to validate the actual rate of any of these speculations. Other limitations involve problems in
examining the relationship between separations and self–harm. Considering most of the study involved females, would it be beneficial to examine the
same amount of males when developing etiological models relating to self–harm? Examination of such items may help explain the

Is Harm Reduction a Desirable National Drug Control Policy Goal?
There are many differing viewpoints in the United States when dealing with drug policy. Within the political arena, drug policy is a platform that many
politicians base their entire campaigns upon, thus showing its importance to our society in general. Some of these modes within which drug policy is
studied are in terms of harm reduction, and supply reduction. When studying the harmful effects of drugs, we must first to attempt to determine if
drug abuse harms on an individual level of if it is a major cause of many societal problems that we face today. In drawing a preliminary conclusion to
this question we are then able to outline the avenues of approach in dealing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Those that are opposed to harm reduction feel that its advocates are hypocrites that call for tougher policies in dealing with alcohol and tobacco
yet in the same breath call for reductions in the penalties for illegal drug use. Opponents also believe that initiating a harm reduction policy may in
fact increase the use of illegal drugs as well as the people that are seeking drug treatment. Robert J. MacCoun, is an associate professor in the
Graduate School of Public policy at the University of California and author of Toward a Psychology of Harm Reduction. Professor MacCoun also
supports the movement towards a harm reduction approach to drugs. He explains how the harm reduction movement emerged in Amsterdam in the
1980's in response to mounting heath issues directly related to the use of drugs. Professor MacCoun illustrates that harm reduction is not a program
that has been proven effective in the war on drugs, being constantly rejected as a viable option to present drug enforcement policy by the United
States government. Professor MacCoun illustrates however that the policies that the U.S. presently has in place has failed in its ability to eliminate
drug use thus causing the major harms of drug use in place. Professor MacCoun believes that many of the drug related problems we have today are a
result of poor legislation as well as the

residents are forced to turn to contaminated sources." (Klein196) The government officials seem to have lost their way. The reason for doing
politics is to make a change and make the lives of others something great. Now it is just who can pay out the most money. Turning good and clean
public resources into a business is forcing others into doing some horrendous things. Forcing the people that can barely afford a decent pair of shoes

Harm reduction can be defined as an approach that aims to reduce the consequences of high risk behaviours such as injection drug use on the individual
and on society as a whole. Harm reduction programs provide injection drug users with access to a clean injection environment, sterile injections,
drug–preparation equipment and safe disposal of contaminated material at the time of injection. Staff members in harm reduction facilities provide
health teaching, anonymous HIV testing, information on addiction treatment, condoms and assist in connecting clients to social and health services

infections outside sub–Saharan Africa (Ball, 2007). Various studies support that blood–borne disease transmission and contraction are strongly linked to
injection drug use. A study conducted by Semaan et al. that analyzed data of 10,301 persons who inject drugs in revealed that 32% had shared

Deliberate Self-Harm Paper
Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and its functions, especially those affecting behavior. Past occurrences may cause someone to act
in a certain way, especially within social situations. Deliberate Self–Harm (DSH) is a behavior in which a person commits an act with the purpose of
physically harming themselves with or without real suicidal intent. Self–harm is most often related to going through trauma in childhood rather than as
an adult. There are many reasons why people are known to self–harm; a lot of the time it is to help feel the pain they are feeling on the inside in
another way. One of the reasons a person may self–harm is due to a high rate of childhood sexual or physical abuse within their past. Despite people's
beliefs, people who suffer from a self–harm disorder are not doing it for attention. If someone sees cuts or scars on someone's wrists or legs, their
immediate reaction is that it is from attention. In reality people who self–harm are not doing it for attention and a lot of the time these people take
every precaution to hide the cuts to not be questioned about it. There has been research conducted on many aspects that tie into this behavior; research
that involves both men and women, the outcomes of childhood abuse, and more. Together, these articles of research... Show more content on

It is just an alternative perspective to drug abuse because the American society's prohibitionist ideologies pushed people to believe that abstinence was
the only way to solving the problems of drug abuse. For example, Benedikt Fischer talks about the benefits of the adoption of harm reduction in
Germany, in his article "Drugs, Communities, and Harm Reduction in Germany: The New Relevance of Public Health Principles in Local
Responses." Similar to America, Germany dealt with drug issues by applying the idea of abstinence. However, in the early 1980s, they have
"modified their approach to drug controls from a strategy of repression and stigmatization of drug users to a policy of what is currently discussed
under the umbrella of harm reduction" (Fischer 1995: 393). After employing the harm reduction approach, registered drug users, deaths related to
drugs, and drug–related crime has declined significantly. Although drug abuse and drug–related issues exist, one of the main goals of harm reduction
was accomplished; reducing the harm and risk of drugs. Fischer concluded that "one is especially startled by how these relatively dramatic changes
and results could be accomplished in a political–ideological environment of a nation and culture characterized by a strong sense of prohibition and
repression" (Fischer 1995: 406). Therefore, due to the similar past policies on drugs, America will experience beneficial changes if it

John Stuart Mill's Harm Principle Essay
John Stuart Mill discusses the conception of liberty in many ways. I'd like to focus of his ideas of the harm principle and a touch a little on his

conception on liberty. Not only do I plan to discuss and explain each of these parts on the conception of liberty, but I also plan to discuss my thoughts
and feelings. I have a few disagreements with Mill on the harm principle; they will be stated and explained. My thoughts and feelings on Mill vary but

The government's main duty according to the Harm Principle is to keep society functional and civil.
My main disagreement with Mill's Harm Principle is that indirect harm does not apply. Mill writes, "In many cases, an individual, in pursuing a
legitimate object, necessarily and therefore legitimately causes pain or loss to others, or intercepts a good which they had a reasonable hope of
obtaining (1009)." Who is he to say that while pursuing an object pain or loss is necessary at all? The definition of necessary, according to
Webster's Dictionary, is absolutely essential or needed to achieve a certain result or affect. I do not think that in any way it would be necessary to
cause harm while trying to achieve a goal. There are so many ways to go about to achieve a goal without causing harm to someone. However, if for
example, you and a coworker are in position for a promotion, you are both fighting against each other for the position, you receive the promotion and
unintentionally hurt the other worker, and this harm caused does not put you at fault. If you did something evil or something that would purposely
cause the individual to not get the promotion this is intentional and you should be placed at fault. In summary Mill believes that consequential harm
will not apply to the harm principle; however I believe that the circumstances of the situation are very important in be able to consider whether or

Adults who work in an education based setting sometimes feel uncomfortable dealing with young teens who self harm. Whether this is because of
personal reasons or ignorance, self harm is a common subject in schools. When interviewed for an artical, one teacher said that she, "couldn't deal
with the emotional aspect, and couldn't think of any reason why someone would want to physically harm themselves." Another teacher, at the same
school, stated that he "hadn't had the experience or training necessary to help the child. This appeared to make the child uncomfortable and regret
asking for help." Should asking for help really be such a difficult task? Schools have classes designed to educate teens about how to grow up and
take charge, and deal with problems; staff should have the option to take similar classes. If self harm was discussed more in these classes, and
appropriate coping methods were taught, there would be less of a problem in schools. Medical officials have much of the same experiences as
educators. While they are certified to clean and help with the healing of a self inflicted wound, they have no mandatory obligation to help the patient.
Some hospitals have reported that medical staff feels that the patient "deserves to feel the pain" as they purposely harmed themselves. Nurses will use

the national MLDA of 21 may be preventing as many as 600 suicides and 600 homicides annually in the United States." Numbers like these prove
just how big of a difference the minimum drinking age can have on people. Not many people take into consideration the psychological effects of
drinking on people. With the MLDA kept at 21, lives are being saved. Hence, America has not gone back to the lower drinking age since 1984. With

controversy in regards to how far a practitioner should go to protect a patient's well–being, whilst trying to adhere to their rights and consent of
treatment methods (Feldman, 1990, p. 261). The most ethical solution is to only resort to extreme methods of treatments if the patient is clearly seen

Research by Kellner et al. has also shown how ETC can be effective for behavioural disorders, but in this case, for severe depression. Kellner defends
this treatment explaining that many controversies have arose regarding ECT because of misrepresentations of it in the media and lack of knowledge of
the logistics of its mechanisms. Patient, "Ms. A.", a 72–year–old woman became seriously depressed and was not responding to any psychotherapy or
drugs pertaining to clinical depression. She was barely able to function properly, and after a course of eight ECT sessions of "unilateral ultrabrief
pulse treatments", her score on the Hamilton Depression Rating scale, ranked out of 24, went from 38 to 6. She was soon able to continue her usual
daily activities (Kellner, 2012, p. 1–2). Miss. A's results from ETC showed that this method of treatment greatly improved her previously severe
depression. Depression can lead to attempts at suicide as well as self–harming ones' self, so extreme punitive treatments are better to pursue than
allowing the chance of a patient taking ones' own life.(Feldman 1990, p. 263). It is emphasized that consent of patients that are legally incompetent
for medical decision making should have a legal guardian to decide for them (Kellner 2012, p. 5). Thus, ETC has shown to be

Essay on Self Harm
Introduction Deliberate self–harm is a term that covers a wide range of behaviours some of which are directly related to suicide and some are not.
This is a relatively common behaviour that is little understood. This essay provides an overview of the nature and extent of those most at risk of
self–harm, including causes and risk factors. Examining some of the stereotyping that surrounds self –harm, and looking at ways in which self–harm
can be prevented.
A useful definition of self–harm is from Professor Keith Hawton (Hawton et al., 2006. p29). An act with a non–fatal outcome in which an individual

three times more vulnerable to self–harm than their non–Asian counterparts. Research revealed a complex range of disturbing issues, isolation, despair,
many forms of family abuse, conflicts between generations, with many reporting unrealistic pressures of rigid matrimonial roles and duties in

Adolescent Self-Harm
Self–harm in Adolescents
The objective of the research paper was to determine the prevalence of self–harm in adolescents. The research was conducted using a survey with a
self–report questionnaire. This research took place in a total of forty–one schools in England. Six thousand and twenty students participated in the
research; most of those students were ages fifteen through sixteen. The main outcome of the research was deliberate self–harm. Results showed that
self–harm was more common in females than it was in males (eleven point two percent vs three point two percent). Females reported the factors to
deliberately self–harming to be recent self–harm by friend and/or family members, misuse of drugs, depression, anxiety, low self–esteem and
impulsivity. Factors in males self–harming were suicidal behavior in friends and/or family members, drug use and low self–esteem. Based on all the
statistics, researchers concluded that deliberate self–harm is quite common in adolescents, especially in females. They concluded that schools should
integrate mental health awareness and educate the students about mental health problems along with screening for those at risk. Deliberate self–harm,
self–poisoning, or self–injury in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Alligator Harm

  • 1. Alligator Harm In a breakthrough study that contradict decades of understanding, Louisiana state university researchers has concluded that a person's drunkenness does not impair the ancient reptiles ability too inflict enormous physical harm. "Our data indicates that human intoxication do not transform an alligator into a docile creature that enjoys wrestling" said professor Ryder Strong, chair of LSU's prestigious Center for Bullying and Hazing Studies. "Despite it's slow witted demeanor and tendency to bask motionlessly in the hot sun, its a mistake to believe that an alligator will passively tolerate a half nelson, no matter how much Southern Comfort is fueling it". Strong said that the study yielded statistics that speak for themselves. "In 10 out of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even when armed with an empty tequila bottle. "At best, the bottles bounced harmlessly off the alligator's snout said LSU research assistant Tracy Sawyer. Also, Sawyer noted that when placed in water, the drunken volunteers fared even worse, while the alligator performed markedly better in addition, the alligators far outperformed their inebriated human counterparts in the following areas lunging, biting, crushing, dismembering, and swallowing. According to the study, an alligators characteristic grin should not be interpreted as a lighthearted reaction to the outrageous nerve of an inebriated human. "Don't let an alligator's easygoing appearance fool you," Sawyer says. "These creatures has no sympathy for drunken pranksters looking for fun. They are not like black bears." An expert in the field, alligator wrestling is something Strong suggests should be undertaken only by professionals. For drunkards interested in proving there mettle with alligators, the researchers proposed certain guidelines. Instead of baiting an alligator, they suggest seeking another form of drunken recreation, such as: attending a strip club, burning a pile of tires, calling an ex–girlfriend, or paint one's rear end with a funny face and videotape ... Self Harmers Self–Harmers Should Have to See a State Ordered Therapist Self–Harmers Should Have to See a State Ordered Therapist Did you know that 1 in 12 teenagers will engage in some form of self harm. We have noticed these stats have been on the incline for many years now. We are able to handle only when the person is willing to admit that they themselves have a problem. My Stance on this topic is. Self Harmers should have to seek therapy from a state ordered therapist and if their behavior continues see about being put in a mental ward. Most self harmers start at the age of 12–14. Most of the people that are female with one out of every five females will commit to self harm, while one out of every seven males will commit to self harming themselves. ... Like I mentioned before in paragraph 3 most people will not self harm with the intention of suicide when they start, but some people get addicted to the minor pain and the endorphins that are released from the pain that makes people relaxed and happy. We can compare this to a runners high when you have the most energy. At this point if they are addicted for this reason this is the perfect time to start a treatment ... It will also examine the public perception of the user, which has created an ineffective philosophy. Most importantly, my paper seeks to recognize the harm ofharm reduction. This discussion will highlight the lack of hope it creates in the user. Harm reduction needs to be addressed so that a long–term solution for the user can be implemented, not just a quick fix Band–Aid solution. If caregivers, counselors and the general public do not hold more of an abstinence position on recovery they will eventually do users a disservice. I will touch on needle exchange, safe injection sites, wet ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The idea behind the creation of safe injection sites is that society can't cure or get rid of the drug problem. While harm reduction may work for those not effected directly with the damages of drug use, it encourages out of sight, out of mind compartmentalization of people who unconsciously don't want to help the addict. This results in the addict staying in his addiction. It seems to me that such an approach is much like facilitating drug use, which is illogical. The fact is we can't stop rape either but we don't resort to lowering the consequences and give ways to do it. There is a concern that the users sharing straws to snort cocaine will spread Hep "C". So, should we also create a straw exchange program? There will always be something that will cause harm with drug use. We also have to ask if we are in line with Canada's Drug Strategy definition of harm reduction, which, in general, is to lower sickness, death, social misery, crime, violence and economic costs. Has it reduced the harms associated with alcohol and drugs to individuals, families and communities or is the drug still in control? Some effects of drugs are too powerful to manage. Paranoia, a common effect of cocaine use, can cause violent and erratic behavior. Sometimes users experience 'coke bugs': imaginary bugs crawling over their skin. Heroin causes euphoria, which is followed quickly by sadness,

  • 5. John Stuart Mill The Harm Principle John Stuart Mill was an English philosopher and a progressive in British politics during the 17th century. He lived during a time of political transformation in England caused by the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution brought social mobility to the middle and lower class, along with more political participation. With this newfound freedom, the people of England felt their liberties were being diminished because they had the ability to accomplish all the more but in some cases, could not. This was just one question of liberty brought up during the time Mill was developing intellectually (Sparks 186). Mill wrote many works that trifled with the idea of gender equality, government structure, and economic principles, to name a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The largest and arguably most influential point Mill makes in his essay is that the harm principle does not only apply to the government anymore but to all of society. In making this argument he is defining societal values in that it shaped areas in which society must respect personal liberties. He constructs his statement on how the harm principle is applied to society in three parts. His first assertion pertains to the liberty of one's own mind. He states, "the inward domain of consciousness; demanding liberty of conscience, in the most comprehensive sense; liberty of thought and feeling; absolute freedom of opinion and sentiment on all subjects, practical or speculative, scientific, moral, or theological" (Mill 20). In saying this, Mill means that a person's liberty cannot be persecuted if they never act on them. Any thoughts a man may have are his own thoughts and he may think whatever he would like to think. This has shaped societal values because no one is truly obligated to share what they think today, nor is it a societal norm to criticize one's opinions if they differ from your own but it does happen. His second statement addresses the control one individual can have over another. He claims that an individual can plan their life as they please, and should not be met with the pressure of what others may see as being abnormal (Mill 20). By saying this, Mill expresses the ... Many people consider that prescription for medical marijuana as a moral sin or something that should be given to help the patients to improve his/her bad condition. As a majority of people and federal consider prescription for medical marijuana is immoral and it is restricted in many states including Texas. In the section on liberty, John Stuart Mill introduces the harm principle. Mill believes that "The only legitimate ground for social coercion is to prevent someone from doing harm to others". (John Stuart Mill handout, Principle 1). It means that everyone should have their own individual liberty to think as they satisfy unless their actions or decisions may not cause harm to others. I am cancer patients, in first stage. Doctor can cure my disease; doctor gave prescription for medical marijuana. However, I live in a Texas, where medicine is legal but federal government do not give permission to use medical marijuana, which is somewhat unfair to me and other cancer patients. Here people are minority group and majority people do not to listens minority group. Federal government has a reason behind to make Marijuana medicine illegal but according to Mill, if that medicine does not harm others and helpful to cancer patients, then it should not be illegal. • 7. John Stuart Mill Harm Principle A central belief of the liberal atmosphere on which western legal systems are fundamentally based is that of negative freedom, to do as one wills, provided that it causes no harm to others. But a question which goes to the heart of the ethics of allowing total individual freedom with minimal intervention from society can be characterized like so; where to draw the line between freedom and condemnation? When is interference with individuals and their private morality justified? The harm principle, which seeks to introduce personal liberty and its coexistence with society, appears in John Stuart Mill's "On Liberty", first published in 1859. However, the idea is not black and white – the harm principle can be criticized for its excessive paternalism, lack of clarity, and incomplete handling of certain situations. In this essay, I will argue that Mill thoroughly justifies his theory for the harm principle. To make this argument, I will examine the harm principle, evaluate possible counterarguments, then apply the Harm Principle to a real–life scenario. I will first examine Mill's "Harm Principle", as well as his reasoning for it. The principle itself reads as follows: "The sole end for which mankind are warranted, individually or collectively, in interfering with the liberty of action of any of their number, is self–protection. That the only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Support your answer with evidence from two study weeks in Block 2, including at least one chapter from Book 1. This essay aims to explain social harm and its connections to social justice. The concept of social harm is difficult to define, Social harm occurs when problems not only affect an individual but for cause harm to society as a whole. World issues such as discrimination, racism and poverty are classed as social harm, and are also easily linked to the concept of social justice. Social justice refers to the distribution of wealth and resources and is a concept which has often lead to mobilisation. Often, occurrences such as natural disasters whilst causing their own harm to society highlight hidden social harm such as poverty and discrimination, it is once these underlying issues have been highlighted that moblisation occurs and social justice becomes linked with social harm. Self harm is "...the act of deliberately harming your own body, such as cutting or burning yourself" (www.mayoclinic.org). Many things can cause someone to self harm such as self–anger, self–hatred, cope with negative feelings, and to even just feel better (Canadian Mental Health Association). Self–harm can also be called self–injury, self–inflicted violence, or self–injurious behaviors. These names refer to a spectrum of behaviors where injuries are self inflicted. Self–mutilation can also be used to describe these behaviors but this term can be offensive. In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders self–harm is a symptom of borderline personality disorder only and does not have a diagnostic criteria. • 11. Should the government only restrict an individual’s... In a democratic society, it is generally considered the Government's role to promote morality and justice within its citizens and seek to restrict supposedly immoral and unjust acts. Thus if an act is to be considered immoral, it seems obvious to suggest that the government is justified in restricting it regardless of whether it is harmful to others. However, since everybody has a different understanding of morality and freedom, no Government could legitimately restrict an act on the basis of it being 'immoral'. Thus it seems more plausible to suggest that the Government should only restrict actions which everybody can agree should be restricted. However it's not clear where the line should be drawn or how a consensus on the issue could be... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While Mill is clear that offence is not sufficient to be considered 'harm', he does seek to ban some things which may merely be offensive such as public indecency. He doesn't give explicit examples in this instance, merely that there are some things which are acceptable in private, but when performed in public go against the general concept of 'good manners'. While this notion may be agreeable to some, it's difficult to justify given Mill's other beliefs surrounding harm. There are many acts which may be accepted in public by some and not others, for many there is little wrong with homosexuality being exhibited in public, but for others even the mere thought of it being practised in private causes them great distress. Although it's not obvious where the line should be drawn in terms of public indecency, it seems obvious that everybody has a limit as highlighted by Joel Feinberg (offence to others). Feinberg used a thought experiment concerning a ride on a bus in which the people around you begin to perform slowly more intolerable acts beginning with mere horrible smells and concluding with sexual acts being performed on an animal. This demonstrates that if we wish to accept making sex acts with an animal on a bus illegal, we may not be able to argue for it without also legitimising a restriction on other more mundane acts of public indecency such as picking your nose. • 12. Personal Statement On Self Harm Self–harm patients are at a risk for suicide whether this is an intended outcome or a result of self–harm gone wrong. 25% of people who commit suicide will have been seen in a hospital setting for a self harm injury in the past 12 months (Emerson, 2010). As well, 72% of suicide victims under the age of 25 have had a history or self–harm behavior (as sited in Cook, Clency, Sanderson, 2004). These statists provide a strong argument for the importance of vigilance and ongoing monitoring when providing care for clients who display self–harm behavior. This paper will argue the importance for close monitoring when caring for self harm but not necessarily the prevention of self harm itself. Vigilance and monitoring are important However there is evidence that complete preventions is not necessarily the best approach to self–harm (Duffin, 2006). The Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders fifth edition (DSM–5) uses the term non suicidal self–injury. Self–injury is defined as "intentional self inflicted damage to the surface of his or her body of a sort likely to induce bleeding, bruising, or pain, with the expectation that the injury will lead to only minor or moderate physical harm"(American psychiatric Association, 2013,p803). • 13. Side Effects Of Self-Harm Research Paper Bleeding out. Scarred from head to toe. These are a couple of side effects of self–harm inflicted by adolescents. Some mental causes for self–harm are depression, anxiety, and mood disorders. Self–harm is currently a major concern, and there have been many moves recently to combat it. Two of the more significant treatments developed that assist adolescents with their self–harming behaviors are Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) (Laye–Gindhu & Schonert–Reichl, 2005). Before discussing these treatment options, an understanding of what self–harm truly means is crucial. "Self–harm, [is] defined here as deliberate and voluntary physical self–injury that is not life–threatening and is without any conscious suicidal intent" (Laye–Gindhu & Schonert–Reichl, 2005, p. 447). "According to population studies, between 5% and 10 % of adolescents report past–year self–harm" (Mehlum, et al. 2016, p. 1082). Some of the more well–known forms of self–harm are "cutting, hitting, biting," (Laye–Gindhu & Schonert–Reichl, 2005, p. 453) and other non–suicidal actions – scarifications are among more publicly–recognized type. Harm Principles In order to begin discussing how lawmakers can legitimately draw a line between permitted and criminal activity there are two principles which need to be defined and acknowledged, the harm principle and the offense principle. The harm principle, initially created by John Stuart Mill in his essay On Liberty , is heavily centred around the protection of society. According to Mill, the only sufficient reason to criminalise certain behaviours and activities is if it causes harm to members of the society or society as a whole, harm to oneself is not a strong reason to criminalise behaviours as we have a right to individual autonomy. Muller raises a case against amputation based on the principle of autonomy. On the one hand autonomy can be used to argue for the rights of body modifications like for plastic surgery for aesthetic or sexual purposes but on the other hand the autonomy of BIID patients is heavily doubted. Autonomy requires insight, free will and rationality, those suffering from a neuropsychological condition cannot be classified as autonomous and thus performing an amputation on them should be prohibited. • 16. The Inclination of Today’s Youths Towards Self-Harm Many teenagers are suffering a hidden pain in the privacy of their homes. They secretly cut, burn, scratch, pull hair, and bruise their bodies. The psychosis is termed non–suicidal self–injury (NSSI).Teenagers are feeling pressures from typical insecurities of low self–esteem, body image, fashion trends, bullying, pressures from friends, and family issues. As a result, teens are turning to the internet for strategies of how to deal with the pressures of life, making this topic more of a public enigma, than a private suffering issue. NSSI is a growing phenomenon and parents and psychologists should advocate safe internet sites, and force social media outlets to provide links for teens to access healthier ways to manage their emotions. NSSI behavior is on the rise and is more prevalent among our youth today; due to images, other teens upload on the internet. Today many teens are accessing self–harm images and content on the World Wide Web , through YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram. The images are of the cuts and burns that others have inflicted on themselves, while others are of diagrams depicting where to cut, that parents and teachers will not notice. Some teens will use self–injury to try to relieve their feelings of anxiety and pressures they are feeling in their lives. Self-Harm, Self Injury, And Nonsuicidal Self Suicide Self–harm, self–injury, and nonsuicidal self–injury (NSSI) are all terms that describe the act of intentional infliction of tissue damage or pain to oneself without the intent of dying by suicide (Briere & Gill, 1998; Andover et al., 2005; Nock & Favazza, 2009; Klonsky, 2011; Young & Stark, 2011; Makowska et al., 2016). The cases of self–injury has doubled over the past ten years in adolescents (Makowska et al., 2016). Self–injury is experienced by 4% of the general population, however, self–harm was reported by 21% of individuals in clinical settings, and those individuals reported the behavior is often done compulsively or repetitively (Briere & Gill, 1998). Studies have found that individuals with severe mental illnesses are more likely to engage in dangerous behavior including self–injury and suicide attempts;, and people diagnosed with schizophrenia and mood disorders have the highest rates of suicide among all mental illnesses (Klonsky, 2011; Victor & Klonsky, 2014; O'Hare et al., 2015). The DSM–5 classifies Nonsuicidal Self–Injury as a separate diagnostic criteria (American Psychiatric Association, 2013; Klonsky, 2011), suggesting that self–injury itself is considered a mental illness. Most researchers have examined the relationship between childhood trauma and self–harm behavior, concluding that early trauma is a factor within the development of self–harm. It is said discussing info regarding frequency, age, areas of the body injured and degrees of relief are crucial to discuss. Predictors of self–harm are said to be: insecure attachment, childhood separation, emotional neglect, sexual abuse, and dissociation. 133 undergraduate students were included in this study, 67% being female and the rest male. The study involved multiple self–report questionnaires such as the deliberate self–harm inventory to assess various aspects of DSH as well as abuse frequency. Results displayed very shocking findings, where 38% of the sample reported a history of DSH with 18% of the group harming themselves more than 10 times in the past. Majority of the risk factors the authors hypothesized for self–harm were significantly correlated with the frequency of DSH. Women were shown to have high levels of insecure parental attachment, whereas the men had childhood separation issues. The DSH inventory showed the frequency of self–harm being positively skewed. Physical abuse and childhood separation were the two variables that stood out on the API inventory, with 35 people reporting physical abuse and 41 reporting childhood separation. Lack of parental emotional neglect may show a history of emotional overinvolvement, which is a factor that could also increase the risk for self–harm. Gratz et al., (2012) failed to go into further detail of how emotional neglect could correlate with self–harm at a later age. But besides that, one limitation of this study is about the methods used; it offers no way to validate the actual rate of any of these speculations. Harm Reduction" "Drug policy regarding the control of the traditional illicit substances (opiates, cocaine, cannabis) is currently moving through upbeat times in almost all Western countries. Prohibition on the basis of repressive law enforcement not only seems to fail on a large scale, but also to create vast additional costs, problems, and harm for drug consumers, who often find themselves in extreme social, economic, and health conditions" (Fischer 1995: 389). Western countries struggle with the control of drug abuse. America, for example, has been failing with eliminating or reducing the chronic issues of drug abuse and crimes associated with drugs. America's goal around these problems consistently has been complete ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is just an alternative perspective to drug abuse because the American society's prohibitionist ideologies pushed people to believe that abstinence was the only way to solving the problems of drug abuse. For example, Benedikt Fischer talks about the benefits of the adoption of harm reduction in Germany, in his article "Drugs, Communities, and Harm Reduction in Germany: The New Relevance of Public Health Principles in Local Responses." Similar to America, Germany dealt with drug issues by applying the idea of abstinence. However, in the early 1980s, they have "modified their approach to drug controls from a strategy of repression and stigmatization of drug users to a policy of what is currently discussed under the umbrella of harm reduction" (Fischer 1995: 393). After employing the harm reduction approach, registered drug users, deaths related to drugs, and drug–related crime has declined significantly. Although drug abuse and drug–related issues exist, one of the main goals of harm reduction was accomplished; reducing the harm and risk of drugs. Fischer concluded that "one is especially startled by how these relatively dramatic changes and results could be accomplished in a political–ideological environment of a nation and culture characterized by a strong sense of prohibition and repression" (Fischer 1995: 406). Therefore, due to the similar past policies on drugs, America will experience beneficial changes if it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. John Stuart Mill's Harm Principle Essay John Stuart Mill discusses the conception of liberty in many ways. I'd like to focus of his ideas of the harm principle and a touch a little on his thoughts about the freedom of action. The harm principle and freedom on action are just two subtopics of Mill's extensive thoughts about the conception on liberty. Not only do I plan to discuss and explain each of these parts on the conception of liberty, but I also plan to discuss my thoughts and feelings. I have a few disagreements with Mill on the harm principle; they will be stated and explained. My thoughts and feelings on Mill vary but I'd like to share my negative opinion towards the principle and hope to put it in a different perspective. The harm principle was published in Mill's work ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The government's main duty according to the Harm Principle is to keep society functional and civil. My main disagreement with Mill's Harm Principle is that indirect harm does not apply. Mill writes, "In many cases, an individual, in pursuing a legitimate object, necessarily and therefore legitimately causes pain or loss to others, or intercepts a good which they had a reasonable hope of obtaining (1009)." Who is he to say that while pursuing an object pain or loss is necessary at all? The definition of necessary, according to Webster's Dictionary, is absolutely essential or needed to achieve a certain result or affect. I do not think that in any way it would be necessary to cause harm while trying to achieve a goal. There are so many ways to go about to achieve a goal without causing harm to someone. However, if for example, you and a coworker are in position for a promotion, you are both fighting against each other for the position, you receive the promotion and unintentionally hurt the other worker, and this harm caused does not put you at fault. If you did something evil or something that would purposely cause the individual to not get the promotion this is intentional and you should be placed at fault. In summary Mill believes that consequential harm will not apply to the harm principle; however I believe that the circumstances of the situation are very important in be able to consider whether or ... • 35. Essay on Self harm I used to be a cutter... but shh, don't tell. Society didn't allow me to express my pain that way...Today's society refuses to acknowledge many problems that teens deal with. People would rather believe in 'happily ever after' than face the truth, children are suffering. While it may seem to others that the problems are made up, its very real to the one dealing with them everyday. This suffering can leave permanent scars, and damage (if not ruin) their future. By remaining ignorant, self harm becomes more and more common, but at what cost? If educators and medical personnel were to be more educated on self harm and how to deal with it, teens and young adults would be more comfortable asking for help. Getttig rid of the stereotypes that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Adults who work in an education based setting sometimes feel uncomfortable dealing with young teens who self harm. Whether this is because of personal reasons or ignorance, self harm is a common subject in schools. When interviewed for an artical, one teacher said that she, "couldn't deal with the emotional aspect, and couldn't think of any reason why someone would want to physically harm themselves." Another teacher, at the same school, stated that he "hadn't had the experience or training necessary to help the child. This appeared to make the child uncomfortable and regret asking for help." Should asking for help really be such a difficult task? Schools have classes designed to educate teens about how to grow up and take charge, and deal with problems; staff should have the option to take similar classes. If self harm was discussed more in these classes, and appropriate coping methods were taught, there would be less of a problem in schools. Medical officials have much of the same experiences as educators. While they are certified to clean and help with the healing of a self inflicted wound, they have no mandatory obligation to help the patient. Some hospitals have reported that medical staff feels that the patient "deserves to feel the pain" as they purposely harmed themselves. Nurses will use little or no anesthesia on the patient, or will treat them last – no matter the severity of the wound. This goes against the Hippocratic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Psychological Harm Psychological Harm To begin, in the journal, Bierut et al are informing psychiatrists on the effect of lower drinking ages on people's mental health because it causes issues. This journal focuses on how in times of lower drinking ages, women especially are more likely to develop into suicidal or homicidal beings. With study grants from the National Institutes of Health, they were able to prove, "These researchers said their data suggest that the national MLDA of 21 may be preventing as many as 600 suicides and 600 homicides annually in the United States." Numbers like these prove just how big of a difference the minimum drinking age can have on people. Not many people take into consideration the psychological effects of drinking on people. With the MLDA kept at 21, lives are being saved. Hence, America has not gone back to the lower drinking age since 1984. With that, teen binge drinking has been on a constant decline since. Italy maintains their lower drinking age and has seen an increase of teen drinkers in their country. Additionally, in the journal, Kandel is informing sociologists on the drinking behavior in teens because it is a prevalent issue. The... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 37. ECT as an Effective Treatment for Self Harm ECT as an Effective Treatment for Self Harm in Extreme Cases of Mentally Unstable Patients who Cannot Give Informed Consent There is much controversy in regards to how far a practitioner should go to protect a patient's well–being, whilst trying to adhere to their rights and consent of treatment methods (Feldman, 1990, p. 261). The most ethical solution is to only resort to extreme methods of treatments if the patient is clearly seen as not being mentally stable enough to provide the right judgement call, and if they are in a life–threatening situation in which they could potentially harm themselves or others. In cases where patients are not mentally stable enough to give their consent, their family, guardians, partners, or an authorized... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Research by Kellner et al. has also shown how ETC can be effective for behavioural disorders, but in this case, for severe depression. Kellner defends this treatment explaining that many controversies have arose regarding ECT because of misrepresentations of it in the media and lack of knowledge of the logistics of its mechanisms. Patient, "Ms. A.", a 72–year–old woman became seriously depressed and was not responding to any psychotherapy or drugs pertaining to clinical depression. She was barely able to function properly, and after a course of eight ECT sessions of "unilateral ultrabrief pulse treatments", her score on the Hamilton Depression Rating scale, ranked out of 24, went from 38 to 6. She was soon able to continue her usual daily activities (Kellner, 2012, p. 1–2). Miss. A's results from ETC showed that this method of treatment greatly improved her previously severe depression. Depression can lead to attempts at suicide as well as self–harming ones' self, so extreme punitive treatments are better to pursue than allowing the chance of a patient taking ones' own life.(Feldman 1990, p. 263). It is emphasized that consent of patients that are legally incompetent for medical decision making should have a legal guardian to decide for them (Kellner 2012, p. 5). Thus, ETC has shown to be ... • 40. Essay on Self Harm Introduction Deliberate self–harm is a term that covers a wide range of behaviours some of which are directly related to suicide and some are not. This is a relatively common behaviour that is little understood. This essay provides an overview of the nature and extent of those most at risk of self–harm, including causes and risk factors. Examining some of the stereotyping that surrounds self –harm, and looking at ways in which self–harm can be prevented. A useful definition of self–harm is from Professor Keith Hawton (Hawton et al., 2006. p29). • 41. Adolescent Self-Harm Self–harm in Adolescents The objective of the research paper was to determine the prevalence of self–harm in adolescents. The research was conducted using a survey with a self–report questionnaire. This research took place in a total of forty–one schools in England. Six thousand and twenty students participated in the research; most of those students were ages fifteen through sixteen. The main outcome of the research was deliberate self–harm. Results showed that self–harm was more common in females than it was in males (eleven point two percent vs three point two percent). Females reported the factors to deliberately self–harming to be recent self–harm by friend and/or family members, misuse of drugs, depression, anxiety, low self–esteem and impulsivity. Factors in males self–harming were suicidal behavior in friends and/or family members, drug use and low self–esteem. Based on all the statistics, researchers concluded that deliberate self–harm is quite common in adolescents, especially in females. They concluded that schools should integrate mental health awareness and educate the students about mental health problems along with screening for those at risk.
