John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress uses allegory to represent a Christian's spiritual journey. It describes the journey of the protagonists Christian and Christiana as they travel from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City. Along the way, they encounter obstacles that symbolize religious and moral concepts such as Mr. Worldly Wiseman representing worldly temptation, Doubting Castle representing despair, and Vanity Fair representing sinful pleasures. The story conveys the message that through perseverance and faith, one can overcome life's difficulties and attain salvation.

Dryden was the first practitioner of comparison and analysis in the history of criticism. And therefore, it is not an exaggeration to say that English criticism evolved from Dryden.

Various concepts in the play "The Hairy Ape"Kaushal Desai
There are many things and concepts one can come across while reading of the play "The Hairy Ape". Here, I have tried to take major concepts in consideration with explanation through the play.
Disgrace is a trailblazing novel by J.M. Coetzee sets in the background of the post-apartheid situation won Booker Prize and honours. The present ppt aimed to throw light on the power subversion in the novel Disgrace through the protagonist David Lurie
:-“Mac Flecknoe; or, A satyr upon the True-Blew-Protestant Poet, T.S.” was a lampoon by John Dryden against the poet laureate Thomas Shadwell who superseded him in 1669.
Mac means ‘son of’. So, MacFlecknoe means ‘Son of Flecknoe’, while the word ‘True-Blew’ means an extreme ‘Whig Blue’ which was the colour of the Tories.
Richard Flecknoe (c. 1600 – 1678) was an English dramatist and poet. His works were praised by some critics and derided by others. Why John Dryden used his name to ridicule and satirize Thomas Shadwell, his contemporary and one time friend who later became an enemy, is not clear. Flecknoe was a minor poet having religious inclinations and most of his writings were private writings. So, Dryden calling him ‘the monarch of absolute nonsense’ was similar to Iago’s ‘motive hunting of a motiveless malignity’. Thomas Shadwell was called the ‘son and successor’ of Flecknoe’.

This is "allegory" in an over- simplified nutshell. You will need to find a copy of the scorpion and the frog tale to start this out. (It's the one where the scorpion talks a frog into helping him cross the river and stings the frog half way over because it is his nature to kill.)

Comic Scenes of Dr. Faustus (Scene: VI & VII)
Tragedy generally emphasizes human suffering but ends with rigid finality. It also criticizes hubris, self-delusion, and complacency. However, sometimes comic scenes must be included in a tragedy with a dramatic purpose. Dr. Faustus is a tragic play with the mood of dark and serious play, but there were also comic scenes. It is very difficult to hold an audience's attention with hours of serious, deep and emotional content without also having something to lighten the mood. That’s why Marlowe added comic scenes in it. Still, many critics say that Christopher Marlowe did not even write these scenes but instead say that they were written later by other playwrights. Many critics are of the opinion that the comic elements in these scenes are low and vulgar.
The literary term for such comic interludes is known as comic relief. A tragedy is bound to create tension in the mind of the audience and if this tension is not relaxed from time to time, it creates some sort of emotional weakness in the mind of the audience. Hence, comic scenes are a necessity to ease the tension and refresh the mind. There was a pressing demand from the side of Elizabethan audience for such interludes. Hence, playwrights had to introduce such comic scenes as the producers also demanded them for a successful run of the play.
In scene VI and VII, we find only three comic scenes. Science, the beginning of Scene VI, Faustus is alone in his study. Then, Mephistophilis appears and a bond is signed with the blood of Faustus. Mephistophilis gives Faustus a book of magic which contains all the knowledge that Faustus. After that Lucifer orders seven deadly sins (pride, covetousness, wrath, envy, gluttony, sloth and Lechery) to entertain Faustus. Faustus questions each of the seven sins who describe themselves. This situation provides comic relief to the audiences. This scene all along is in a serious tone. But Marlowe is converted the serious scene to comic scene.
At the end of scene VI, Dick and Robin once again provide comic relief. Robin has stolen one of Faustus’ conjuring books and wants to make all the girls in the village dance for him. He also wants to use the book to get drunk. Dick and Robin have no connection with the main theme of the play. But they have importance in this play.
Scene VI, prepares us for Faustus' entry into the comic world by telling us to observe him and Mephistophilis as they stand invisible in the court of the Pope. The Pope is mocked and struck on the head, food is snatched from his hands, eating utensils and serving vessels are dashed to the floor. Bewildered and desperately using his occult powers to save himself from the demon in his presence, the Pope stands duped, busily making the sign of the cross, lacking even the wit of Robin. This scene culminates in the mock incantation of the Friars as they; attempt to appease the ghost "crept out of Purgatory."
Doctor Faustus is not comical and poorly

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.
2. Allegory…
A story in which the characters, settings, and events
stand for abstract or moral concepts.
Allegories have two meanings: literal and symbolic
John Bunyan’s “Pilgrim’s Progress” is an example of
spiritual allegory.

"Celestial City.
Part II tells of the journey of Christian's wife
Christiana and their children to Celestial City.

foolish of him to continue his
pilgrimage.
He suggests Christian to settle
down in the village.
But then came Evangelist.

if he truly wants to save his soul
then he must return to the path
which he was walking before.
5. Wicket Gate
When Christian reaches the

by the watchman named
Good-Will, it is in a deeper
sight a symbol of Christ’s grace
to grant him salvation through
difficulties, strives and trials.

The palace beautiful stands for a resting place for the
Pilgrims who are on the way to Celestial City. From
this place Pilgrims founds inspiration, exact
directions & training to reach to the God...
The devil in the Valley of Humiliation in the form
of Appolyon is his method to symbolize the worldly
temptations offered by the devil to make an
allegiance with him rather than with God.
Christian finally conquered Appolyon by the sword
which represents faith.
This scene conveys the victory of faith over
temptations.
8. Vanity Fair(Cristian)….
This fair was initiated by Beelzebub & Apollyon. There
will is to imprison people's mind by surrounding
them by Fear, Superstition & Envy…

Barbarians & they were brought to the court
because they tried to speak truth.
Court executed Faithful but Christian succeeded to
flee.
9. Doubting Castle & Giant Despair….
Despair instigated by his wife to kill the pilgrims
The Giant couldn’t kill Christian because of
‘Sunshine’
Christian used a key to escape named “Promise to
open the gate”
The six men defeated the Giant & the pilgrims
destroyed the castle.
10. Dark River….
Dark Water symbolizes Earthly
Obstruction.
Christian & Hopeful attempts to cross
the river.
An angel appears & tells them to
cross the river by swimming.
While swimming, the river tried to
swallow Christian.
Christian regained his hope and
crossed the river.
11. Christiana…
Christiana has great intelligence.
She proceeds more carefully to cross the slough.
Christiana escaped the party when they find
themselves obstructed by a Giant called “Grim”.
Christiana shows her responsibility by promising
to do what she advices to do.
Because of her strong personality Christiana was
able to enter into the heaven.
