2018 - Using Honeypots for Network Security Monitoringchrissanders88
A strong detection and response capability is required for the success of security program because prevention eventually fails and a motivated attacker can always find a way in. However, economics are not in favor of network security monitoring (NSM). Due to the hardware, software, and labor required it's expensive to deploy an NSM capability and hire qualified analysts to maintain and investigate the high volume of alerts, especially at scale.
In this presentation I'll discuss how honeypots are re-emerging as a practical solution for driving down the cost of network security monitoring. These aren't your traditional honeypots meant to sit outside the firewall to research automated malware. These are focused, use case specific honeypots that are designed to provide detection with a favorable signal to noise ratio. By integrating honeypots into your NSM strategy and taking a targeted approach, a grid of honeypots can realistically become your most cost effective detection tool. I'll make the case for honeypots like these and discuss implementation strategies that I've seen work. You should come away from this presentation with a unique perspective on honeypots and an actionable plan you can use to start evaluating and deploying tactical honeypots in your network.

It’s all over the news that data breaches occur daily! I asked WHY these hackers can download terabytes of data in timespans of months without being noticed. What are these companies paying their SOC team millions of dollars for? How come all the money is going to devices to prevent breaches and little to none in detecting when they occur? Don’t people know there are only two types of companies “those that been hacked, and those that don’t know they been hacked”. What can I do to detect a breach within seconds on any network scale? I think I figured it out. In my talk you’ll learn how you and your clients can benefit by applying my exclusive techniques, which I’ve successfully deployed. So the next time you get hacked the hacker would not be able to steal all those credit cards and photos of that Halloween party.

How to Detect a Cryptolocker Infection with AlienVault USMAlienVault
As an IT security pro, unless you've been hiding under a rock, you've heard about ransomware threats like Cryptolocker. These threats are typically delivered via an e-mail with a malicious attachment, or by directing a user to a malicious website. Once the Cryptolocker file executes and connects to the command and control server, it begins to encrypt files and demands payment to unlock them. As a result, detecting infection quickly is key to limiting the damage.
AlienVault USM uses several built-in security controls working in unison to detect ransomware like Cryptolocker, usually as soon as it attempts to connect to the command and control server. Join us for a live demo showing how AlienVault USM detects these threats quickly, saving you valuable time in limiting the damage from the attack.
You'll learn:
How AlienVault USM detects communications with the command and control server
How the behavior is correlated with other signs of trouble to alert you of the threat
Immediate steps you need to take to stop the threat and limit the damage
AlienVault Threat Alerts are a simple yet powerful tool that comes built-in with Spiceworks. When a device on your network has been interacting with a known malicious host or suspicious IP, you’ll immediately get an alert in your feed and you’ll get an alert email.
Burning Down the Haystack to Find the Needle: Security Analytics in ActionJosh Sokol
Your network is already compromised, but do you know how and by whom? Can you find them, remove them, and prevent them from getting back in again? In this presentation, we will examine actual attacks and indicators of compromise and show how, using some basic network flow pattern analysis, we can detect and prevent contemporary malware, advanced persistent threats (APTs), zero-day exploits and more. In addition, we will discuss how to feed this data into a security analytics program to create a new, broader perspective on the threats that your organization faces.
Over the past four years at National Instruments, we have been collecting tools to work cohesively as part of a larger security analytics platform. The goal of this presentation is to provide the attendee with the basic information that they need in order to build a security analytics program of their own. We will begin by talking about the problem of a lack of visibility within the enterprise environment. From there, we will talk about the traits that characterize a tool as being good for security analytics. Next, we will talk about the types of data that exists in the different tool sets and what types of questions they are good at answering. From there, we will talk about what it means to create patterns and analyze your data to find those specific patterns. Then, we will look at some specific analytics that are useful to run on a regular basis to find malware, misconfigured systems, APTs, and more. Lastly, we will talk about actionable (and even automated) next steps once we discover the patterns that we are looking for.
This talk will encourage audience participation by encouraging them to share what they are doing to perform security analytics and is appropriate for both novice and experienced security professionals.

Hiding In Plain Sight – Protect Against Bad HashesTripwire
Why check for a hash? Cyber criminals, hacktivists & malware engineers create malicious software disguised with known and expected good filenames. One exploited attack method is to insert malware into patch updates where no integrity check is made of the patch identity.
Unless a security check is done to validate the integrity of the hash value against a known good repository, there could be malware hiding within.
Join David Meltzer, Chief Research Officer, and Dayne Cantu, Sr. Systems Engineer, to learn about:
Key Takeaways:
-Current attack methods that may use filenames you already trust
-How to validate integrity and identity of files and patches in your environment
-Identifying indicators of compromise faster with threat intelligence

Improve threat detection with hids and alien vault usmAlienVault
Host-based intrusion dection systems (HIDS) work by monitoring activity that is occurring internally on a host. HIDS look for unusual or nefarious activity by examining logs created by the operating system, looking for changes made to key system files, tracking installed software, and sometimes examining the network connections a host makes. AlienVault USM integrates HIDS with other key security controls to help you get the most out of HIDS, including:
Analyzing system behavior and configuration status to track user access and activity
Detecting system compromise, modification of critical configuration files (e.g. registry settings, /etc/passwd), common rootkits, and rogue processes
Correlating HIDS data with known IP reputation, vulnerability scans and more
Logging and reporting for PCI compliance
The State of Incident Response - INFOGRAPHICAlienVault
Incident Response (IR) teams are designed to detect, investigate and, when necessary, perform remediation in the event of a critical incident. The results of the 2015 SANS Incident Response Survey provides a picture of what IR teams are up against today—the types of attacks they see, what defenses they have in place to detect and respond to these threats, and their perceived effectiveness and obstacles to incident handling.
Some key challenges reported by responders to the survey were:
66% cited a skills shortage as being an impediment to effective IR:
54% cited budgetary shortages for tools and technology
45% noted lack of visibility into system or domain events
41% noted a lack of procedural reviews and practice
37% have trouble distinguishing malicious events from nonevents

With malware accounting for at least 40% of all breaches, knowing how malware works can be an extremely valuable asset in your threat detection cache – especially for the incident responder. According to Verizon’s 2013 Data Breach Investigations Report, “Malware and hacking still rank as the most common [threat] actions”. In general, malware can range from being simple annoyances like pop-up advertising to causing serious damage like stealing passwords and data or infecting other machines on the network.
Malware is as old as software itself and although there are new types of malware constantly under development, they generally fall into a few broad categories. Check out this SlideShare to learn how malware works, and what we believe are the most common types of malware you should be prepared for.
By learning how malware works and recognizing its different types, you’ll understand:
- How they find their way into your network
- How attackers control them remotely
- How they use your systems for nefarious purposes
- And most importantly, the security controls you need to effectively defend against and detect malware infections. (Hint: you need more than antivirus!)

With more IT environments moving data and applications to AWS, the motivation for hackers to target AWS environments is also increasing. We believe these AWS Security Best Practices will be a valuable addition to every security practitioner’s playbook.
We'll finish up with a demo of NEW AlienVault USM for AWS, which delivers all of the above capabilities, plus log management & event correlation to help you detect threats quickly and comply with regulatory requirements.
Improve Threat Detection with OSSEC and AlienVault USMAlienVault
Host-based IDS systems, or HIDS, work by monitoring activity that is occurring internally on a host. HIDS look for unusual or nefarious activity by examining logs created by the operating system, looking for changes made to key system files, tracking installed software, and sometimes examining the network connections a host makes. AlienVault USM features a complete integration of OSSEC, one of the most popular and effective open source HIDS tools.
In this live demo, we'll show you how USM helps you get more out of OSSEC with:
Remote agent deployment, configuration and management
Behavioral monitoring of OSSEC clients
Logging and reporting for PCI compliance
Data correlation with IP reputation data, vulnerability scans and more
We'll finish up by showing a demo of how OSSEC alert correlation can be used to detect brute force attacks with USM

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.
