Alfonso X was the king of Castile and Leon from 1252-1284. He advanced the Reconquista through military campaigns and oversaw a period of cultural flourishing. Alfonso established the School of Translators of Toledo, which brought together Latin, Jewish, and Muslim scholars to translate important texts into Castilian or Latin. This institution had a lasting influence and established some of the first orthographic rules for the Spanish language. After his death, Alfonso was buried in Seville near his father and mother.
