The document describes a project to design an electronic alcohol detection system to avoid accidents. It uses an MQ3 alcohol sensor to detect if a driver has consumed alcohol. If alcohol is detected, 10 LEDs light up on an LM3914 integrated circuit to indicate the alcohol level. The system is intended to help enforce drunk driving laws and increase road safety.

2. The main aim of this project is to design an electronic system for
implementing an efficient alcohol detection system that will be useful
to avoid accidents. There are many different types of accidents which
occur in daily life. Accidents may cause due to many reasons it may be
due to brake fail. Most often accidents occur due to over drunken
person. Though there are laws to punish drunken drivers they
cannot be fully implemented because traffic police cannot stand on
every road to check each and every car driver whether he/she has
drunk or not. This can be a major reason for accidents. So there is a
need for an effective system to check drunken drivers. Therefore in
order to avoid these accidents we have implemented a prototype
project. In our project, initially we check whether the person has
drunken or not by using the MQ3 alcohol sensor. In this system, sensor
circuit is used to detect whether the alcohol was consumed by driver or
not.

4. In this project, Alcohol Detection is designed which indicates the levels
of alcohol through a set of 10 LEDs. MQ-3 is the main module in the
project. It is an alcohol sensor whose conductivity changes according to
the concentration of the alcohol.
The output is given to the signal pin (pin 5) of LM3914, which is an
analog voltage sensing IC. According to the value at pin 5, the outputs
are activated. For voltages between 0 and 5V, the outputs are activated
from 1 to 10.
MQ-3 has 6 pins and the data pins can be interchanged. The heater
terminals of the sensor are connected to supply and ground
respectively.
Two similar data pins (A or B) are connected to supply and other two
similar data pins are given to one end of voltage divider network. The
other end of voltage divider consists of a 470Ω resistor and 20 KΩ
POT. The common point is given to pin 5 of LM3914.

6. MQ-3 is an alcohol sensor that can be used to measure or detect
breath alcohol concentration. It is a highly sensitive sensor with
fast response time.
MQ-3 can also detect Benzene, Methane, LPG, Carbon monoxide
and Hexane.
MQ-3 alcohol sensor is a 6 pin device out of which 4 pins are
used to fetch signals and other 2 are used to provide current to
heater coil.

7. LM3914 is a dot/bar display driver IC. It senses the analog
voltage levels and drives 10 LEDs accordingly. It can be used
to drive LEDs, LCDs and vacuum fluorescent displays.
It can also drive low current incandescent lamps. Several
LM3914 ICs can be chained to form 20 to 100 segments.

8. “Alcohol Detector” can be used in the various
vehicles for detecting whether the driver has
consumed alcohol or not.
This project can also be used in various companies
or organization to detect alcohol consumption of
employees. Alcohol detection system in an
automobile is a must feature which every car or bus
should have.
“Alcohol Detection System in Cars” provides an
automatic safety system for cars and other vehicles
as well.

9. •To develop a system supporting a wider range of
signs and language modes.
• It can replace the traditional peripheral devices
like mouse and keyboards with the data glove
with the help of gestures.
• To control machine activity at sites which are not
easily accessible by using a Robot control system.
• Making the system wireless giving it portability and
commercial viability.
