Patrons, such as popes and merchants, financially supported artists during the Renaissance so they could focus on their craft. This allowed art to become more realistic as artists like Michelangelo, Donatello, and Masaccio focused on accurately depicting the human body and three-dimensional space. Writers also moved away from religious topics and toward real-life subjects, politics, and satire, with famous Renaissance authors including Petrarch, Machiavelli, Dante, and Boccaccio.
