The Akshaya Patra Foundation provides mid-day meals to over 1.3 million children across 9,000 schools in 9 Indian states. It began in 2000 serving 1,500 children and aims to ensure no child is deprived of education due to hunger. The Vasanthapura kitchen in Bangalore has a cooking capacity of 50,000 meals per day, delivered to around 530 schools using a fleet of 35 vehicles. Cooking starts at 4 AM and food must be delivered to schools before 1 PM, covering around 1,400 km per day across 26 routes with 16-20 schools each. Vehicles include owned and hired trucks customized with racks to carry small, medium, and large serving vessels.
