This document describes a method for detecting vehicles in dense urban areas using aerial images. The method uses Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HoG) features and disparity maps from at least two subsequent images along with exterior orientation data, a digital elevation model, and a road database. Road segments from the database are projected onto the images. Disparity maps are used to exclude elevated objects like buildings and vegetation. Region growing excludes homogeneous areas. Remaining areas are classified using HoG features. The approach was tested on images of Munich, achieving up to 70% accuracy in vehicle detection.
