1) Uganda's health system generates significant amounts of hazardous healthcare waste that contributes to the spread of infectious diseases like HIV and hepatitis. 2) A 2010 assessment found that hospitals generate an average of 92kg of waste per day, of which 40% is hazardous, while lower level health centers generate 20-42kg daily. Open burning is commonly used for disposal. 3) Current healthcare waste management practices in Uganda are inadequate and do not ensure occupational and public health safety, posing risks of disease transmission through unsafe waste handling and disposal. Urgent intervention is needed to address this issue.
