The document discusses how technology is rapidly advancing and changing the way people communicate and do business. It emphasizes that organizations need to reimagine their strategies and operations to take advantage of new technologies like mobile, cloud computing, and social media. Specifically, it suggests that companies think mobile-first, embrace bring-your-own-device policies, invest in unified communications, and move IT's focus from infrastructure to strategic analysis and vendor management. The Social Enterprise In A Cloud First And Mobile First World - SPTechConRichard Harbridge
Organizations today need to be more responsive. People are more connected than ever before. The world has become a giant network, with people sharing, learning, and making decisions on the go at every second. What if you, and every person in your company could work together, like a network? What might that look like and how might social enterprise technology play a role?
While many organizations understand the benefits social technology can provide it’s often not as clear how we can go about implementing these technologies in a way that complements our organizations investments in powerful collaborative technologies like SharePoint. SharePoint is used as an enterprise collaboration platform in almost every organization, yet many organizations are still in the process of deciding why and when they should implement some of the new social capabilities or how best to leverage Social technologies like Yammer with their current investments.
Join Richard Harbridge as he shares Microsoft’s vision for Enterprise Social and the future of work. Richard will explain how and where customers are investing in social, what is changing and important to understand, and what technology investments have been made and are being made by Microsoft to help customers connect and work in a cloud first and mobile first world.
In our latest seminar we looked at how crucial it is for organisations to continuously adjust their business model in order to keep up with the fast pace of digital advancement, keep ahead of the curve and to ensure that digital is fully embedded and delivering the best possible results across all aspects of your business.
We discussed the challenges and tangible benefits that go hand in hand with “digital transformation”, including both good and bad customer service, data capture, improving efficiencies and using digital to help deliver a new improved business model.

Application Modernization is the hottest buzzword in the IT world today. For many, it means the migration and
transformation of an old application to a modern platform and emerging technologies. With Digital Experience solutions, means much more. Application Modernization is about taking what consumers expect from cutting edge mobile experiences, websites and applications – Slick User Experience, Modern Workflow, Mobile Support, Social and Cloud, and applying it to the enterprise space. This session will look at these five areas and apply them to WebSphere Portal and the
IBM Digital Experience solutions. Examples will highlight how and why focusing each of these areas can have a positive impact and upside inside your organization and recommendations on how to apply Application Modernization.

Each CIO post description includes something resembling the 12 roles and requirements. This list outlines what CEOs are currently looking for in their CIOs. However, it's not necessarily what CEOs really need from their CIOs.
In the current data-driven economy, in which analytics and software have become the main factors in business, executives must reconsider the hierarchies and silos that fueled the business in the past. There is no longer a need for "technology people" who work independently of "data people" who work in isolation from "sales" people or from "finance." Instead, they need to manage organizations where every employee is embraced by technology and data as integral to their work.
They also require CIOs to guide them there. In this regard, redefining the business to accommodate the new data economy is the primary task executives have to today's top-of-the-line CIOs.
Here's how:
from Software and the Business to Software is the Business
When Cargill began to put IoT sensors in shrimp ponds, Chief Information Officer Justin Kershaw realised that the $130 billion agriculture business was evolving into a digital enterprise. To determine the point at which IT should stop and where IoT technology engineering needs to begin, Kershaw did not call CIOs from other food and agricultural companies to discuss their experiences. He contacted the CIOs of SAP and Microsoft as well as various other companies that use software. He was thinking about reimagining the world's biggest agricultural business as a software business.
Modern Delivery
Moving software from a supporting role to leading position is the why is the issue, then modern delivery is the way to do it. Modern delivery involves an approach to product (rather as project) management rapid development and small teams of cross-functional experts which co-create, as well as continuous integration and delivery, all with a brand new financial model that supports "value" not "projects."
However, don't try to build an modern SDLC. Instead, build a software development cycle (SDLC) on an industrial infrastructure. The architecture that is intended for this data-driven economy relies on platforms and cloud-connected, makes use of APIs that connect with an ecosystem outside and splits monolithic applications into microservices.
"A platforms model encompasses more than just an architecture. It's a mental model that allows us to consider how vertically we can provide the vet, farmer, or pet's owners, then expand to think horizontally about ways to make solutions adaptable, scalable and secure" claims Wafaa Mamilli Chief Information Officer and Digital Officer of global animal health firm Zoetis. "Platforms can be flexible, intelligent and run algorithms that let us rapidly change. If we did not adopt the platform model and approach, we'd be funding these massive programs."

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Cloud Strategy

Mobile Strategy
9. What is an
app?
self-contained program or piece of software
designed to fulfill a particular purpose; an
application, esp. as downloaded by a user to
a mobile device.
10. So what should I be doing?
Take Advantage of Mobile
•
THINK MOBILE FIRST!
•
Your current website and its structure are not useful on
a mobile device. Responsive design is a must, but it will
be just the cost of entry in the future. Rethink your
offerings in the "mobile context".
•
When designing the mobile experience, think task not
brand. Think convenience store, not supermarket.
•
Mobile devices give us the unique opportunity to be
"Present at the Point of Need!"
•
REIMAGINE STUFF!!
21. The Mobile Mindset
Mobile First = User Needs First!
When designing for mobile, consider the
“mobile context”. Where will the user
most likely be, what might they be doing,
how long will they most likely have, etc.
vs.

23. Embrace "Bring Your Own Stuff"
• 70% of firms who deployed BYOD
programs achieved increased
bottom line revenues
• Device replacement and
reimbursement expenses decline,
because employees take better care
of personally owned devices
• More than 80% of enterprises stated
that worker productivity increased

24. Embrace "Bring Your Own Stuff"
BYO?
Most of the work tools I use
today come from an App Store,

Cloud
Apps
25. So what should I be doing?
Mobile Device Management
• Mobile Device Management (MDM) software
secures, monitors, manages and supports mobile
devices deployed in the enterprise.
• MDM functionality typically includes over-the-air
distribution of applications, data and configuration
settings for all types of mobile devices, including
mobile phones, smartphones, tablet computers.
27. The cloud is here to stay...
and that's a good thing!
Here's why...
28. The main advantage of cloud computing is
mobility. Using cloud-based technologies means
that you can work wherever you have Internet
access...and increasingly on whatever device you
want to!
29. Better Security?
Yes, Much Better Security!!
One of the top concerns of cloud skeptics is
data security. Well according to
SuccessFactors, security is actually
increased when using cloud solutions due to
strict ISO security standards that
cloud providers must adhere to, in
addition to the regular security audits.
Most cloud services – especially those
targeting enterprise use – employ protection
and security far exceeding that of most
Fortune 500 companies and government
agencies—and absolutely beyond the
security capacity of any small or midsized
business or nonprofit.
30. Business Agility!!
Capacity and location
planning are no longer
in your hands, but are
the responsibility of the
cloud vendor.
That means you can
respond quickly to any
business changes that
may arise unexpectedly
because operations are
handled by the cloud
vendors.
31. Most of the work tools I use today come from an App Store,
not my IT department. They are delivered via an "App Store"
in a cloud-based model.
32. Transition to the IT department structure of the future
Because of technology, the IT department will have a different makeup in 2020
than it does today.
• Internally, the viability of what we currently call cloud services will force IT to focus less on infrastructure and applications,
and more on vendor management and high-level business analysis (see below)
• Externally, IT will rely on a stable of services and specialists that do not need to be hired internally. Research firms, valueadded resellers (VARs), and systems integrators are examples of external resources that core IT will rely on.
• Many jobs will disappear. It’s not only that many jobs will be outsourced; many will be directly replaced with technology.
Tasks will be automated to the point that a person is not required to accomplish them. In the same way that machines have
taken over many physical labor positions, they will soon take over many intellectual labor positions. In their place, different
jobs will emerge, requiring redeployment of resources and skills. Those who can’t adjust will find themselves without a job.

34. Benefits of Cloud Computing
Reduction in the cost and
time of INNOVATION!
• Don't buy servers, lease
them!
• Servers can be up and configured
in hours or minutes not days or
weeks
• Technology can be commissioned
and decommissioned as needed

leveraging the latest technologies not managing
them
• We need IT staff that can add value to the
business, not manage and patch servers
36. So what should I be doing?
- Don't buy another server!

communicate differently. They have
always communicated differently.

entirely) defined by generation, who
communicate differently. They have
always communicated differently.
They’re not used to getting “spray and
pray” types of marketing and other
communications from organizations,
they’re used to choosing or “following”
people and content streams.

Rethink Taxonomy and
Content Delivery!!
48. Develop Connected Content!!
What if I land here and it’s
too complicated?
What’s it about?
Who wrote it?
When was it written?
What’s the source?
What if its WAYYYY too
complicated?
What if I land here and and I
need deeper information?

Unorganized Content
“How do I” linked content?

51. Big Data....or Big Perspective?
What does a member's
(customers) "profile"
really look like?
Where are they
creating value that
goes unnoticed, or
worse, unrewarded?

Intelligence
"Business Intelligence is a set of
methodologies, processes,
architectures, and technologies
that transform raw data into
meaningful and useful information
used to enable more effective
strategic, tactical, and operational
insights and decision-making."
The amount of fundamental change to our basic understanding of what “computing” means, how “computing” happens, and who and what drives innovation in that space, is staggering. It demands a shift, a significant shift, in how we think about technology today. Examples – mobile, social networking, location awareness, cloud computing, etc.

Mobile Design = Small and Targeted
To have a successful mobile site or app, the obvious guideline is to design for the small screen. Sadly, some don't, and we still see users struggle to hit tiny areas that are much smaller than their fingers.
The second point is more conceptual — and harder for some people to accept: When you have a smaller screen, you must limit the number of features to those that matter the most for the mobile use case.
