1. Students’ Attitude Towards Learning English
Language as Second Language Among KPTM-
UiTM Students.
Ahmad Faizul Shah Bin Mohd Sirat
2. Introduction
• It is widely accepted that an important predictor of success in learning English is
the students’ attitude (Gajalakshmi, 2013)
• It has been observed that many students are not able to become proficient in the
English language regardless of the number of hours of instruction they received
(Adi Afzal Ahmad, 2011)
• Student’s attitude is an integral part of learning and that it should, therefore
become an essential component of second language learning pedagogy
(Gajalakshmi, 2009).
3. Background of Research
• Identifying Positive or Negative Attitude
• Extrinsic or Intrinsic Learners
• Attitude will be measured by using Likert Scale
• Improve teaching method, improve students’ attitude?
4. Problem Statement
• The respondents’ obvious negative attitude towards English may lead to conclude
that they are not well aware of the importance of English and learn it as a
compulsory subject (Dr. Mohamad Jafre Zainol Abidin, Majid Pour-Mohammadi
Hanan Alzwari, 2012)
• Most students still do not acknowledge the importance of the purpose of
learning English as Second Language (Samsiah Bidin, Kamaruzaman Jusoff,
Nurazila Abdul Aziz, Musdiana Mohamad Salleh, Taniza Tajudin, 2009) .
• Students learn English because it is required in the system (Samsiah Bidin,
Kamaruzaman Jusoff, Nurazila Abdul Aziz, Musdiana Mohamad Salleh, Taniza
Tajudin, 2009).
