2. INTRODUCTION
• In any language classroom, the ultimate goal would be to guide the students
into achieving communicative competence
• The only way to assess the students’ understanding of the language is by
evaluating their ability to communicate
3. BACKGROUND OF THE RESEARCH
• Communicative competence among students in a classroom has always been
a matter
• This issue occurs even in ESL classes
• This research focuses on the students’ communicative competence in
classroom
4. PROBLEM STATEMENT
• Due to the quite a big number of students in most classes, lecturers find that
several students are still having some issues when they need to converse in
English and this research has been conducted to look on a perspective of the
possible reasons of this matter.
5. RESEARCH OBJECTIVES
• To find the effectiveness of the communicative competence in a small group
discussion.
• To study the changes of communicative competence on a different scale of
group discussion.
• To propose solutions to the problems of communicative competence in a
classroom.

• What are the effects of communicative competence on a small group
discussion?
• What changes occur on communicative competence with a different scale of
group discussion?
• Why does the changes of communicative competence occur with different
scale of group discussion?
• How does small group discussion effect the student’s communicative
competence in a classroom?
8. RESEARCH DESIGN
• Qualitative method is used in this research
• Fully structured interview
• Interviews has been conducted to both students and lecturers population
9. RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS
• A set of questions that that will aim to answer all 4 Research Questions
• The questions are divided into 4 different parts to make it easier to analyse
• The effects of communicative competence on a small group discussion.
• The changes occurred on communicative competence with a different scale of group discussion
• The cause of the changes of communicative competence occur with different scale of group
discussion
• The relationship between small group discussion and the student’s communicative competence in a
classroom
• The results collected were from the students and lecturers from KPTM Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia
