Immunity to Change, they write,
“. . . the change challenges that today’s leaders and their
subordinates face are not, for the most part, a problem
of will.
The problem is the inability to close the gap between
what we genuinely, even passionately, want and what we
are able to do. Closing this gap is a central learning
problem of the twenty-first century.”

• Festinger concluded that cognitive dissonance, or at least the avoidance of
it, makes a man of strong conviction unlikely to change his opinion in the
face of contradiction; he is immune to evidence and rational argument.
• As Festinger explains: “Tell him you disagree and he turns away. Show him
facts or figures and he questions your sources. Appeal to logic and he fails to
see your point.”
