- Soviet Union invades Afghanistan … discuss to students that we are again seeing it come back to 1979 Big defeat to the U.S. in the cold war because now the SU has another area rich in oil … remember containment and the domino theory – have students define each.

- The US stepped in a secretly gave the Afghans $40 billion to fight the Soviet Union … we gave them guns and training and aid. We had to do it in secret to not give the SU a direct reason to fight us. Mujahedeen – a very religious anti-soviet group. The longer the war went on the more extreme their ideas became. We didn’t do any real research … just wanted to kill some RussiansMovement started by Charlie Wilson – Congressman from Texas … really did feel for the ppl and tried to support rebuilding.

- Was in the area fighting against the Russian … a big believer that the west needs to stay out of the middle east or any Islamic area. He loved to fight!He wants his Muslim army idea to spread around the world … provides justification for terrorism … msg greatly appeals to poor young men … feel the world has betrayed them and needs an enemy Al Qaeda Many reports that we used Bin Laden to fight against the Russians … that we personally trained him and his soldiers … the US government has denied this but organizations like the BBC have printed reports saying that this is true.Either way, he does get the training and goes back to Saudi Arabia and he wants more fight and start Al Qaeda

- After the war, the US does not stay and supports the area, a lesson that we are trying to learn from today. Ppl were poor and desperate and they would listen to anyone. A civil war occurred because both the US and Russia left the area without a stable government. The Mujahedeen came out victories and these ppl become the Taliban … they turned against us and become a terrorist organization that supported other terrorist. They never liked the West, even before we gave them the money, and most didn’t know we gave it to them.Supported Bin Laden and helped to harbor them after September 11th … this is why we go to war
