1. The study examined microcystin accumulation in fish in the tidal fresh James River.
2. Results showed that pelagic filter-feeding fish consumed higher amounts of phytoplankton containing microcystin compared to benthic fish.
3. Microcystin was found to accumulate in the livers and muscles of fish at levels that could cause physiological impairments. Further work is needed to understand the impacts on higher trophic levels and geographic spread of the toxin.
