The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Editor's Notes
My advert is focusing on the abuse but mainly emotional abuse. Abuse is a common problem within relationships. The organisation that I am going to be working with is the NSPCC.
They are the leading children’s charity who help children who've been abused to rebuild their lives, protect those at risk, and find the best ways of preventing abuse from ever happening. NSPCC is helping people who need support and guidance to get over what they have gone through. NSPCC
These type of people can be both male and female as statistically both male and females suffer abuse. Social economic class can be any as abuse can relate to anyone. Some values and ideologies in which the audience are very vulnerable, and insecure within themselves. People who doesn’t like to be alone and like to fit in the with groups and other people.
The target audience in which my advert is aimed at is 17- 19 years old. This will fit in the ages as people may be reflecting the same issues which involves abuse. For example, people may know someone who has been involved with abuse or was abused which could relate to my advert. Also the abuser who has been abusing the person as the secondary audience.
This questionnaire help me with the idea of my advert as it showed me the answers in which people responded to my question, highlighting to me what I need to put in my advert which the audience is not aware of. One question which I decided to put in my questionnaire was some statistic that mention if they believed that
Focus group help me understand the bases of the audience reaction to the questions and their opinions on what I needed to further more information. One question which I took from the questionnaire which needed to be
The focus group pointed out how emotional abuse is not seen as a massive issue compared to other forms of abuse highlighting to me that emotional abuse should be the main focus on my advert.
Some of them are a YouTube clip which shares a video of a person story which is about sexual abuse. They tell the story of their experience and reflect on what happened to them showing the audience the signs and the awareness of sexual abuse. But as result when conducting the focus group I realised that there is not enough knowledge about emotional abuse which is why I want to focus my advert on emotional abuse.
Primary Audience:
The victim will also be a woman which shows that’s who I am targeting it at.
I am targeting at female because it would relate more to them and it would make more sense that if the target primary audience is females.
Secondary Audience:
They can recognise the signs and help raise awareness for victims or for people who feel like they know someone who is being abused.
My specific message has two meanings I want to educate the audience as I want them to know how serious this is and how much it occurs in people’s everyday life. In addition, I want to raise awareness to people who does not have the knowledge of emotional abuse and want them to know the signs of emotional abuse.
Realism is a form of advert which I be using for my advert as I want my advert to come across to the audience as a serious advert which is making the audience aware of how emotional abuse can effect people even without realising it.
The story behind the advert is where there is a story about a couple who at the beginning look like an ordinary couple, loved up and is happy with each other. The stories progresses into the girl wanted to go out with her mates but is told that she has to wear a dress which she does not want to wear. The story will then cut into the girls having a good time but a girl who looks miserable and is constantly on the phone as the boy is constantly calling and texting her.
The shot will then cut back to the boy who is on the girls Facebook and is deleting boys which shows him controlling.
The advert will then have a voice which is speaking over the actions making the advert very appealing to the audience.
Spilt screens will be used to show the contrast of the good times and the bad of the couples relationship and shows the change in behaviour.
Also to help get the message across to the audience that emotional abuse effects many people.
Shock tactics will be used to show the realism of the advert as the subject of the advert is focusing on real life advents.
Simple code and conventions which be used as I want my advert to be appealing and eye catching towards the audience.
I am going to use both online and TV to distribute my advert. Firstly, I am going to use T.V channels such as E4 and MTV. Reason for this is because when I received my questionnaire back, most people watch channels such as E4 and MTV. Furthermore, most young teens usually watch these channels as they have programmes such as dramas which relate to the young teens.
With regards to my advert being online I chose to have it on YouTube as i know a lot of young teens do tend to visit YouTube and uses YouTube a lot highlighting that my advert will be seen by a variety of audience.
