Adding Whole Numbers
Objectives
 6C1a – Students will be able to add whole
numbers ( use up to three addends with
no more than 4 digits in each addend and
 whole numbers)
Addends
 Definition:
addends- a number to be added

Example:
          245
         +786

     This problem has two addends
Addends
How many addends are in these problems?
                               527
                               681
                             +786

                 This problem has three addends

                              183
                              517
                               21
                             + 5

                 This problem has four addends
Adding Whole Numbers
 How do we add whole numbers with two
 or more addends?

                 2864
                  345
                 +436
                   ?
Adding Whole Numbers
 One way to solve this problem is to use the associative property.
o Associative property: when adding numbers, the grouping of
numbers does not affect the result.
This addition problem could be solved like this:
                                 2864
                                  345
                                 +436

                             Or like this:
                                 436
                                2864
                                +345

No matter which way you solve the problem you will end up with the
                             same sum.
Adding Whole Numbers
 The associative property can be used in order to find the sum of the
numbers. Let’s take a closer look:
                                  2864
                                   345
                                  +436

                      First add the ones column:
                                6+4=10
                                 5+0=5
                               10+5=15

Since the answer is 15 we will have to regroup by putting the 5 in the
ones place and carrying the 1 to the ten column.
Adding Whole Numbers
 Next we move to the tens column:
                                   1
                                 2864
                                  345
                                 +346
                                     5

                               6+4=10
                                4+1=5
                               10+5=15

In this case we need to regroup. We will put the 5 in the tens place and
                               carry the 1.
Adding Whole Numbers
 After the tens we move to the hundreds place:
                                1
                               2864
                                345
                               +436
                                  55

                              4+1=5
                             8+3=11
                             11+5=16

Once again we need to regroup. We will put the 6 in the hundreds
place and carry the 1 to the thousands place.
Adding Whole Numbers
 Now we move to the thousands place:
                                   1
                                   2864
                                     345
                                   +436
                                     655

                                  2+1=3

Now we put the 3 in the thousands place and we have solved the problem.

                                   2864
                                    345
                                   +436
                                   3655
Try This:

     7121
     +321
     7442

   ones:1+1=2
   tens:2+2=4
 hundreds:3+1=4
thousands:7+0=7
Try This:
  4562
   421
  + 20
  5003

  5813
  1270
  +532
  7615
