This document discusses the management of acute seizures. It defines acute seizures and status epilepticus. It outlines the different types of seizures and various causes including underlying brain issues, biochemical imbalances, drugs, fever and hypoxia.
The management of acute seizures follows the ABCDE approach. If seizures continue, benzodiazepines are given which enhance GABA inhibition. If seizures persist, phenytoin is given which blocks sodium channels. If seizures are still not controlled, paralysis and ventilation in the ICU may be needed. Complications like brain injury, physical injury and SUDEP are discussed. Three clinical cases of patients presenting with seizures are presented.
