Types of Sentences according to their purpose
A declarative sentence makes a statement. Since we usually make statements that declare something, most of your sentences are declarative. All declarative sentences are ended with a period.
Examples:
The dodgers won the first inning.
The tallest animal in the world is a giraffe.
Words and Their Context
You have now explored in a practical way a number of different aspects of language and learning, including the difference between implicit and explicit knowledge of rules, rule discovery, the grammar of spoken and written English, phonology, and linguistic and communicative competence. I now want to turn to the significance of grammatical and communicative contexts for understanding words and grammatical structures. For example, in this unit you will study not only the grammar of the passive, but also the contexts in which it is used.
The unit begins with a look at what we can find out about a word in a dictionary and includes an activity to test your knowledge of grammar terminology. It finishes with a look at some of the reasons why words and patterns change over time and the question of what we consider to be 'correct' modern English.
Dictionaries can give teachers and learners an overall view of a word, with information about its many different aspects. So it's a good idea to get to enjoy using dictionaries. I'm therefore starting this unit with an activity to test your knowledge of what a dictionary can tell you about a word.
1. What information might a dictionary give about a word you look up (for example, its pronunciation)? Make a note of your ideas.
2. Now look up the word kneel in a dictionary and see what information is given. Summarize what you found.

how it is pronounced
that it is a verb
that it is intransitive (see below)
that it has alternative past tense forms: knelt or kneeled
that kneeled is used particularly in the United States
that kneel down is a phrasal verb
that it means fall or rest on the knees or a knee
that it comes from an old English word, cneowlian.
In a dictionary like Cobuild or The Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, you will also find examples showing you how the word can be used: for example, He kneels beside the girl or Lottie knelt down to pray. We are also given the -ing form of the verb and an example: The kneeling figure was Mary Darling.
Transitive and intransitive verbs
A dictionary always tells you whether a verb is transitive or intransitive, that is, whether it can be followed by an object or not.
The verb 'lost' is transitive because we can put a noun after it. The verb yawned is intransitive because we can't put a noun after it.
Active and passive sentences
Sentences in English are either active or passive. Teachers of English need to understand the grammar of each of them and to be clear under what circumstances it is appropriate to use either the passive or the active. Let's start with the grammar.

- 2. STRUCTURE OF SENTENCES The sentences in Active voice and Passive voice are different from each other in many ways. They also differ in their structure. Let us see the differentiation in their structure.
- 3. ACTIVE VOICE The structure of Active voice is : Subject + Verb + Object (SVO)
- 4. TYPE - I The verb is along with –ing form (or) comes alone.
- 5. ACTIVE VOICE (Eg) : He is writing a letter. Subject : He Verb : is writing Object : a letter
- 6. TYPE - II The verb in the sentence is auxiliary verb.
- 7. ACTIVE VOICE (Eg) : She is Sita. Subject : She Verb : is Object : Sita
- 8. PASSIVE VOICE The structure of Passive voice is : Object + Verb (V3) + Subject (OVS)
- 9. TYPE - I The V3 form of the verb in the sentence changes when the sentence is converted into Passive from Active.
- 10. PASSIVE VOICE Base Sentence : He wrote a letter. (Eg) : The letter was written by him. Object : The letter Verb : was written (V3) Subject : by him
- 11. TYPE - II The V3 form of the verb in the sentence does not change even when the sentence is converted into Passive from Active.
- 12. PASSIVE VOICE (Eg) : I read a book. = Active A book was read by me. = Passive •The base verb in both cases is ‘read’. •It remains same, in both the cases.
- 13. Convert the following into Passive voice : 1. He read a novel. 2. He does not obey his teachers. 3. Why do you waste time ? 4. Who teaches you English ? 5. He did not help me.
- 14. Convert the following into Passive voice : 6. I told her a story. 7. What did he buy ? 8. Whom did you meet ? 9. Did you read this novel ? 10. I shall help him.
- 15. Convert the following into Active voice : 1. Will this house be sold by you ? 2. By whom will the bill be paid ? 3. I shall not disturb you. 4. We are being waited by her. 5. A letter was being written by him.
- 16. Convert the following into Passive voice : 6. My work was not being done by me. 7. This book has been read by her. 8. I have not been helped by him. 9. The food has already cooked by him. 10. The pack has been received by him.
- 17. Differentiation between Active voice and Passive Voice Sentences.
- 18. Active Voice Passive Voice Subject performs the action expressed by the verb. The subject receives the action expressed by the verb. More clarity and straight forward sentence. Less clarity and does not express the meaning straight forward. Subject + Verb + Object Object + Verb + Subject
