- #5 The next 30 minutes is packed with useful tips and insights. Before we get into that, let me take a few steps back to talk about what Cloudflare does. As you can see from our Mission Statement, Cloudflare is helping build a better internet. How do we do that? What is it that we do? In simple terms we help build a better internet by making your websites more secure, faster, and more reliable And why are these so important? Because if your website got hacked, goes down, or it’s slow to load, for any reason, it will have a negative impact to not only your brand but also your business as it causes revenue loss for your organisation. - #11 Digital transformation is not so much of a buzzword anymore, but it’s still very much relevant here in the APAC region. Many organizations are in varying stages of their transformation. The type of transformation we’re referring to here, was aptly described the Chief Operations Officer at MyRepublic, a Singaporean Internet telecom service provider; who is also a Cloudflare customer. This quote was pulled from an article on ComputerWeekly.com.. Yeo essentially describes digital transformation as transformation how you do business using technologies that lead to greater efficiencies and agility. In addition to the modern consumer becoming far more digital savvy in the region - the fact that the costs of Internet service and smartphones are decreasing, this is leading to larger portions of the population becoming digitally enabled.
- #12 From the same source, the key drivers for digital transformation in the APAC region are cited around improving employee productivity, streamlining operations and improving customer experience. One could argue that these aspirations would be a key focus for any organization, independent of any digital transformation initiatives - but what we’re beginning to see is that technology, and the tools made available both to the enterprise and consumers are accelerating these efforts to meet the needs of the modern digital consumer..
- #13 At Cloudflare, we support over 20 million Internet properties for organizations of various sizes, large and small. The challenges that we continue to see for our customers, particularly some of the larger more established customers in the region center around three areas: Managing complexity. This is less of an issue for many new Cloud native startups, but for organizations that are in the midst of transformation from legacy on-prem infrastructure in tandem with growing public cloud infrastructure investments - managing hybrid infrastructures are an ongoing struggle Agility. DevOps methodologies have become pervasive industry wide, and many traditional IT Operations teams are under increasing pressures to pivot move to more agile workstyles. Again, cloud native, developer centric organizations already have this discipline ingrained in their DNA - larger more established IT Ops teams are the ones that are having to adapt to these shifts. Security. Security is an ongoing battle, irrespective of any transformation efforts. As hybrid and multi-cloud environments become more complex - staying a step ahead of potential cyber threats and attacks is an area that many organizations are investing in heavily. So when the digital economy becomes increasingly dependent on applications that drive the lifeline of businesses, we find many of the above challenges converge in the following areas:
- #14 The Internet has become the lifeblood for business and the primary vehicle of commerce and communication for humanity. But Internet was not designed to deliver the security, millisecond performance, and reliability required now. Now Organizations have to constantly worry about protecting their applications from DDoS attacks, malicious bots, network congestion, and service disruptions. Businesses relying on the Internet must meet customer expectations for always-on access to their services, low latency, total reliability, and high levels of security and privacy. Businesses are accountable for the delivery of these requirements end-to-end, to every customer and employee’s desktop or mobile device, forcing them to address security, performance, and reliability globally and well beyond what they once thought of as the perimeter of their own infrastructure.
- #15 To meet evolving expectations and navigate the limitations of the Internet, businesses have traditionally relied on a broad array of hardware devices deployed in on-premise data centers to deliver functions such as VPN, firewall, routing, traffic optimization, load balancing, and other network services. These band-aid boxes were meant to patch the Internet and address its core limitations. While the band-aid boxes added some security, performance, and reliability benefits, they contributed to massive complexity, cost, technical debt, and a tangled web of dependencies. Band-Aid boxes are expensive - it cost a lot in terms of the CAPEX. On one hand, there is the hardware cost from deploying specialized hardware, it actually costs a lot in terms of the people who have to manage these solutions. In spite of the drawbacks, the band-aid boxes were sufficient to ensure the safety, functionality, and resilience required by businesses that could afford them in the on-premise paradigm, but these band-aid boxes were never designed to work in the cloud. The network hardware boxes worked for a while in on-premises deployment and in the early days of the Internet, but the problem is the application deployment is changing.
- #16 The technology industry has been undergoing a transition from on-premise hardware and software that customers buy, to services in the cloud that they rent. Applications, storage and compute have already moved to the cloud and the network layer is now transitioning to the Cloud. What used to be primarily an on-premises deployment for application is rapidly moving to the cloud - multi-cloud, hybrid-cloud, or in SaaS. Forrester Consulting did a survey of global IT leaders and the results show that 75% of organizations use at least one cloud provider and 54% have already adopted multi-cloud or hybrid-cloud environments. You can’t put those “band-aid” boxes in the cloud.
- #17 Cloudflare is taking the “band-aid” boxes and turning it into a service, so that it can be available to anyone in a way that's easy to use flexible scale able across a platform. - #18 Cloudflare is a globally distributed network that sits in front of your Internet application that is deployed in the cloud, on-premises, or SaaS. When a good visitor visits a web property, we can quickly recognize that it is a good visitor and we provide accelerated performance to the end user. Bots and crawlers can both be good and bad. We can recognize a good vs a bad bot at the edge and allow access or deny access based on the nature of the bot or crawler. Attackers are blocked at the edge, so your web properties are protected at all times. We are building a network and putting the functions of acceleration and security in the network. - #20 Now I’ll spend some time reviewing the need for improving the speed and performance of digital properties, and how Cloudflare approaches these challenges..
- #21 First and foremost, when we think about speed and web page load times - how fast, is fast enough. And does it really matter if web pages don’t load that fast? According to Google, in their New Industry Benchmarks for Mobile Page Speed - mobile pages should load in less than 3 seconds. In a related blog post from Google AdManager, their studies have revealed that a little more than half of website visits are abandoned if a site takes more than 3 seconds to load..
- #22 So performance matters. In addition to meeting the expectations of your digital consumers, and fostering better engagement and conversions - better performance can also correlate with your SEO ranking. Site crawlers from Google will limit the length of time they spend assessing URLs on your site if they are not super responsive. This will inevitably impact how Google ranks your site in terms of content richness and relevance based on specific keywords.
- #23 Improving web performance is not rocket science. Delivering the best performance includes the fastest, most efficient way of getting content from point A (your server/host) to B (the consumer in the browser). This entails - Improving the response of your host server Reducing any obstacles along the network path Ensuring that your web assets and code are highly optimized for best performance
- #24 So let’s decode web performance and provide some practical guidance on how you can address each of these: Optimized web assets and code Compress files. Reduce the size of image, JavaScript, HTML and CSS files. Minify code. Remove bloated code that can drag load times. Reduce redirects. Too many redirects add lag and deteriorate the user experience. Remove render blocking scripts. Render blocking scripts consumer processing time and negatively impact perceived page load times. Enable browser caching. Optimize images. Use the right image format Minimize network latency and congestion Modern protocols. New web protocols like HTTP/2, TLS 1.3 and soon HTTP/3 will help you get a performance boost - by default. Resolve any inherent network latency at a host level. Deploy a CDN. CDNs can significantly combat network latency and provide broad global coverage. Improve server responsiveness In addition to building host servers and instances with adequate resourcing, ensuring that no single instance or host is overwhelmed or potentially taken down to load limitations is always recommended Protecting your server hosts from attack Implement rate limiting that throttles high volumes of traffic requests in a short period of time to maintain server integrity and responsiveness
- #25 In APAC we’re beginning to see high growth in customers adopting CDNs as a key fixture of improving web performance. But in the new digital economy, we’re also beginning to see the emergence of highly API centric application environments that many organizations want to proxy using their CDN, and to seamlessly integrate the extended services provided by a CDN via API to automate service delivery.
- #26 This gives rise to new challenges we find our customers experiencing, even after they’ve implemented a caching layer with a CDN. Our customers cite issues with their incumbent CDN provider that include extended delays in getting configuration changes to populate (up to an hour in some instances), increasing costs over the lifecycle of their usage and difficulties in obtaining real time analytics. As businesses move to more agile workflows, they also encounter usability issues either with clunky APIs or being forced to rely on costly professional services. Lastly, with the increasing requirements around security and compliance some of the more established CDN players have introduced these solutions by acquiring standalone security offerings, which have not been fully integrated into their core offerings resulting in additional latencies in the event of an attack.
- #27 Three things make Cloudflare unique. Simple - Every Cloudflare product is designed to solve complex problems for the customers but from a simple, yet powerful, approach. Through our intuitive dashboard we make onboarding easy - which in legacy cases used to take months or weeks, is now down in hours and minutes. As our customers undergo their respective digital transformation journeys, they need to be able to easily integrate and deploy the services we offer without requiring professional services. Intelligent: With an ever-growing global network, which today spans over 190 cities, Cloudflare has a unique vantage view on diverse and global traffic and trends. Our sheer scale allows us to identify the fastest network paths and routes that avoid congestion and potential outages that can degrade the performance of your digital properties. Integrated: We have built every product on our own. All of our products are built from a single stack, and leverage our expansive network to deploy every service at the network edge. We didn’t stop with just integration among Cloudflare’s product suite. We also created rich 3rd party API integrations to deliver an Out-of-the-Box experience for our customers.

- #29 Cloudflare’s network serves as a global caching layer that spans over 200 cities in over 90 countries, where every Cloudflare data center resides within 100 ms of 99% of the Internet-connected developed world. In addition to offering an easy to use interface, all of Cloudflare’s services can be configured and deployed via API. Cloudflare as a security provider, provides native DDoS and Layer 7 protection without sacrificing performance. Lastly, Cloudflare is the founding partner of the Bandwidth Alliance, such as Tencent, where we’ve negotiated rates with a variety of hosting providers that have either discounted or eliminated data egress charges to Cloudflare’s edge.
- #30 For images and video, Cloudflare offers Stream; an all-in-one online video platform that simplifies video streaming, and future proofs your infrastructure for supporting the latest video codecs. Images are compressed and resized for optimal viewing on a variety of screen sizes, eliminating the need to store multiple versions of the same image for desktop and mobile. Cloudflare is also the only provider to offer parallel streaming for progressive images. This leverages the advances we’ve made with HTTP/2 prioritization and can significantly improve the perceived load time for a page.
- #31 Cloudflare Workers is our answer for deploying serverless logic at scale on our network. Many of our customers are deploying Workers on our network to either replace functions that were being hosted at their origins, letting them not only reduce server and instance buildout at the origin, but also reduce bandwidth utilization overall by having these decisions served at the network edge on Cloudflare.
