A word wall is a display of relevant words in a classroom that is used to build students' phonemic awareness and vocabulary skills. Words can be related to any subject area and should be large enough for students to read from anywhere in the classroom. Teachers are advised to add no more than five new words per week and use color when creating word walls, as color helps with retention. While the original origin of word walls is unknown, they have been effectively supporting student learning for a long time.
