As World War II was ending, the film industry saw a surge in the production of combat films
depicting what unfolded in the war. These films usually displayed the fighting as either patriotic
or anti war. However, some movies were produced which took a more neutral stance on the
violence and focused more on historical accuracy. In The Longest Day, directed by Darryl F.
Zanuck, the Allies plan and execute landings on several beaches in France such as Normandy to
enter the European theater at the start of the second World War. It also shows the events of D Day

Longest Day asserted itself as an extremely successful film because of the more neutral approach

William Morris novel News from Nowhere is portrayed as a utopic vision of a world that not
only abolishes the class system, but is created through the transition from working in order to
survive to working for the pleasure of it. Consequently, his novel may seem only as a vision due
to its idealistic reasoning as to how his portrayed world dependant on nature and people s nature
could possibly exist and support itself. Even though this is merely theory on his part, his essay
Useful Work versus Useless Toil supports a better understanding of Morris conceptualization of
enjoyable labour within his ideal future society in his novel News from Nowhere because it
suggests how finding pleasure in doing work leads to a better and enlightened society.
Morris clearly separates labour between pre and post revolution by highlighting and redefining the
terms civilization and society in which a true society is only possible once the class system is

anthem to protest by turning their backs on the American flag, so they can influence the people.
People responded negatively when this happened and angrily taunted the athletes who were
