Acid mine drainage (AMD) is the process resulting from the oxidation of sulfides exposed to the action of oxygen and water. The characterization of the minerals likely the formation and neutralization of AMD is important for the follow and evaluation of environmental impact. The analysis of X-ray diffraction (XRD) together with the Rietveld method is presented as a promising alternative to favor the identification and quantification of mineral phases. The results of the static test ANC achieved by accounting for carbonates consumed during the test, were correlated with the results obtained by the characterization techniques of X-ray diffraction (XRD) combined with the Rietveld method. The highest concentration of carbonate buffering found in AM2E, which may explain the static test results to be neutralizing for the sample. The major phases identified for both samples were aluminosilicates and quartz, with greater than 70% by weight levels.

Abstract— The water quality was studied for selected samples from groundwater and network water-supply. The values of NH3, NO3-, pH, TDS, alkalinity, hardness, Pb, Cd, Fe3+ and Mn2+ were estimated. Ammonia values ranged between 0.07-0.7 ppm. Nitrate values ranged between 2.4 and 0.35 ppm. The TDS was between 645 ppm and 480 ppm. For Fe3+ and Mn2+ the values are below the limits of WHO except for well 9; and manganese in wells 6-10. Several wells showed values of Cd above the Saudi STD. The network water-supply in Tabuk city was investigated. The TDS values for these samples were between 500-600 ppm. The hardness values exceed the Saudi STD limit. When ammonia was tested, only one sample showed high value. Chloride level was below 158 ppm, but sulfate values for most samples were 128-222 ppm. For iron only one sample (well no. 9) was above the permissible limit.

Concrete can deteriorate as a result of alkali aggregate reaction, an interaction between alkalis present in
alkaline pore solution originating from the Portland cement and reactive minerals in certain types of aggregates.
Potential reactivity of aggregates with regard to alkalis present in concrete mix can be determined by Mortar Bar
method, Chemical Method and Petrographic analysis. Of these the chemical method though is quick and does
not require a large quantity of material for testing yet have its own inherent limitations. It does not ensure
completion of reaction as the observations are limited to 24hour only and also does not assess the effect of
varying the combination of coarse and fine aggregates. A study on chemical method by allowing the reaction for
a prolonged time up to 96 hours and also on different grain size ranged matrix was carried at Central Soil and
Materials Research Station, New Delhi. Simultaneously the test results of the modified method are compared to
the existing Mortar Bar method, Chemical Method and Petrographic analysis The outcome of the studies clearly
reflects that the grain size play an important role in the reaction, the reaction time has a demarked impact on
reactivity, in the cases having a high value of silica release the choice of reduction in alkalinity as an indicator
of degree of reaction is not reliable, instead measuring remaining Na2O concentration in Sodium hydroxide
solution after the reaction seems to be much more meaningful in justifying the silica release.

Natural and synthesis apatites represent a cost effective soil amendment, which can be used for in situ reduction of lead bioavailability and mobility. In our previous work, we selected Tunisian Phosphate Rock (TPR) and Hydroxyapatite (CaHAp) as promising minerals for the removal of lead from aqueous solutions. X-ray powder diffraction patterns (DRX), Infra Red (IR), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize TPR and CaHAp. CaHAp was prepared from TPR and employed for the removal of Pb2+ ions at different concentrations from aqueous solution to determine the adsorption properties of CaHAp and compare them with those of a TPR. The kinetic data obtained indicated that the adsorption performances of the adsorbents depended both on their specific surface area and crystallinity. Complexation of lead ion on the adsorbent surface favoured the dissolution of hydroxyapatites characterized by a Ca/Pb molar ratio of 1.69. The maximum adsorption capacity of CaHAp for Pb2+ ions at 25 °C was 1.806 mmol /g relative to 1.035 mmol /g for TPR at the same temperature. The higher capacity of CaHAp was explained in terms of its porosity and crystallinity. The Pb2+ ions sorption results could be modelled by the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The simulations of adsorption isotherms of Pb2+ on CaHAp allow us to conclude that there is a good correlation between the experimental data and the Langmuir model. On TPR, we show a good correlation between the experimental data and the Langmuir and Freundlich model.

ABSTRACT: La2O3-SiO2-supported nickel catalysts were evaluated in glycerol steam reforming. The samples (30wt% La and 5, 10 and 15wt% of Ni on 70wt% commercial SiO2), prepared by the simultaneous impregnation method, were characterized by EDX, nitrogen physisorption, XRD, in-situ XRD, XANES and TPR. The analyses revealed NiO species weakly interact with the support and the different metallic surface areas of the catalysts. Catalytic tests were performed in a fixed bed reactor at 600oC and 15Ni catalyst, which showed the best performance, was also evaluated at 500oC and 700oC. According to the results, the Ni content on the catalyst surface interferes in the distribution of gaseous products H2, CO, CO2 and CH4. The increase in the Ni content increases the carbon formation during reaction. The reaction temperature affected the catalytic performance and the best results were obtained with the 15Ni catalyst at 600oC, which was also tested for 20 hours for the analysis of its stability.

The present work deals with the formation, morphology and photophysical activity of the 2-aminocyclopent-1-ene-1-carbodithioic acid (ACA) Capped Silver nanoparticles via chemical reduction method. The method utilizes a simple chemical reaction of silver idodide and sodium borohydride. The advantages of this method are ease of preparation, convenience in use and especially, that the obtained silver nano particles are uniform in their shapes and sizes. This is important for fluorescence & bio-evolution measurements. Furthermore, UV-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy is employed to monitor the formation process of the nano particles and to determine the optimum conditions for the preparation of stable and highly fluorescence-active silver colloids. Specifically, we observed changes in the shapes of the silver nano particles during the formation. This may be helpful in understanding the growth of the nano particles and creates a new dimension in controlling the shapes of the nano particles.SEM, TEM and XRD studies are carried out. The suitability of ACA capped Ag-NPs as Biomarkers is also Tested by Fluorescence study.

SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERIZATION OF KAOLINITE COATED WITH CU-OXIDE AND ITS EFFE...Premier Publishers
In this paper, a novel copper oxide coated kaolinite was prepared as an adsorbent of Hg(II) ions from aqueous media. The materials used for this study were synthesized, characterised and the product tested for mercury ion removal using standard laboratory procedures. Reactivity and removal kinetic models derived from Freundlich isotherm were used to investigate contact time and pH effects on the coefficient of protonation and rate of mass transfer of Hg(II) ions to the reactive sites, Proton coefficient of 0.89 indicated a decrease in proton consumption function when compared with uncoated kaolinite. At the 12th h reaction time, a maximum adsorption capacity of 85% was achieved. Mass transfer rates of 0.9359h-1 and 0.0748h-1 for the first and second reaction phases indicated a reduction when compared with uncoated kaolinite. These changes may be ascribed to masking of reaction sites and exposed surface area of the Cu-Oxide coated kaolinite.

In this paper, the effect of copper oxide coated kaolinite on mercury (II) removal based on initial metal concentration, particle concentration, and prolonged residence time have been investigated. Experimental methods involved batch mode techniques at ambient temperature. The content was analysed for Hg(II) adsorbed, using standard laboratory procedures. Here, using empirical models derived from Freundlich isotherm, adsorption capacity increased from 300 to 400 mg/kg over the range of initial metal concentration investigated. The complex behavior of existing reactive sites and the generation of new active sites accounted for these changes in adsorption capacity. Increase in particle concentration led to decrease in adsorption. This was over the range of 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 gL-1 solid concentration. Higher Cp reduced the specific surface area for adsorption. Hg(II) ions removal increased with increase in residence time. The most efficient ratio of Cu-Oxide coated kaolinite was at 0.002kgL-1 at 40mgL-1 mercury concentration. Values of between 600 to 900 mg/kg for Cu-Oxide coated kaolinite was higher when compared with the uncoated kaolinite. As ageing was increased, hydroxylation probably increased thus leading to the formation of new reactive sites.

Synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) was achieved by a simple green procedure using Tinospora Cordifolia leaf extract as stabilizer/reducing agents. Ag-NPs in the size range of 2–19 nm is obtained by the treatment of aqueous silver ions with leaf extracts of Tinospora Cordifolia. This eco-friendly approach is simple, amenable for large scale commercial production and technical applications. Further, photoluminiscence studies of these Ag-NPs were recorded & suggested that the present particles were suitable for fluorescence emitting probes. These red emitting Ag-NPs exhibited distinct fluorescence properties (both emission and stokeshift).

Three new ternary copper(II) complexes formulated as [Cu(HIda)(bipy)] 1; [Cu(HIda)(phen)] 2; [Cu(HIda)(dmp)] 3; where HIda =N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2- iminodiacetic acid ; bipy = 2, 2’- bipyridine; phen = 1,10- phenanthroline; dmp = 2,9-dimethyl 1,10-phenanthroline, have been synthesized and characterized by partial elemental analysis, FAB-mass (m/z), EPR, UV-visible and CV measurements. The magnetic and spectroscopic data of all these complexes 1-3 indicate distorted octahedral geometry. The EPR spectra of these complexes in frozen DMSO solutions showed a single at g ca. 2. The trend in g-value (g||>g>2.0023) suggests that the unpaired electron on copper (II) has dx2–y2 character. The SOD activities of the complexes have been investigated. Antibacterial and antifungal activity of these complexes were also measured and discussed.

Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.

Abstract:
Acid mine drainage (AMD) is the process resulting from the oxidation of sulfides exposed to
the action of oxygen and water. The characterization of the minerals likely the formation and
neutralization of AMD is important for the follow and evaluation of environmental impact.
The analysis of X-ray diffraction (XRD) together with the Rietveld method is presented as a
promising alternative to favor the identification and quantification of mineral phases. The
results of the static test ANC achieved by accounting for carbonates consumed during the test,
were correlated with the results obtained by the characterization techniques of X-ray
diffraction (XRD) combined with the Rietveld method. The highest concentration of
carbonate buffering found in AM2E, which may explain the static test results to be
neutralizing for the sample. The major phases identified for both samples were
aluminosilicates and quartz, with greater than 70% by weight levels.

Introduction
The characterization of samples of sterile and wastes from mining favors the chemical
identification and quantification of the analyzed material, which may contribute to the
prediction of the potential for generation of AMD, it also aids in improving techniques used
for such. With that associated with the XRD Rietveld method has shown to be effective to
fulfill the needs for quantifying the mineral phases of the samples. The knowledge of the
mineralogical composition of the material contributes to the planning of actions in order to
prevent environmental degradation caused by mining activity. The ANC test is designed to
evaluate the potential acidity (AP) formation and neutralization potential (NP) of acidity of
the samples. This study was done to characterize two sulfide samples by means of XRD /
Rietveld tests to evaluate the speciation of carbonated phases of the samples and then
correlated with the neutralization and acidity potential obtained by the static test ANC.
Experimental Procedure
Natural samples are from Minas Gerais, in which AM1R is a sample of sulfide waste from
mineral processing and AM2E is a sample of sterile of rock. The XRD analyzes, the powder
method, were carried out under the following conditions: Cu Ka radiation (35KV / 40mA),
2. speed of goniometer 0.02 ° in 2θ per step, with counting time of 5 seconds per step and
collected in the range angle of 5 ° to 85 ° 2θ. The interpretation of the spectrum was
performed by comparison with standards contained in the database of ICDD. For the Rietveld
refinement, the GSAS program and EXPGUI interface profile function pseudo-Voigt
Thompson-Cox-Hastings and the background radiation adjusted by polynomial Chebyschev
was used. The procedure for the ANC test is described in detail in the study Stewart et al.
(2003). The test involves digesting 2 g of the sample pulverized in HCl, in this step the mix is
heated with HCl. After digestion, the solution is titrated with NaOH and then added two drops
of H2O2. After this procedure, the titration goes on to determine the amount of HCl consumed.
Results and Discussion
The criterion for evaluating the results of NP and AP is the ratio between the neutralization
and acidity potential, named of potential neutralization ratio (NPR) and the other criterion is
the NNP, which is the subtraction between NP and AP. A value less than 1 NPR implies a
sample acid-generating and greater than 2, acid-neutralizing. For the index NNP values <20
kg CaCO3/ton of material indicated that the sample is acid-generating and values > 20
CaCO3 kg/ton material indicates that the material is acid-neutralizing. The results of the
acidity potential (AP), neutralization potential (NP) of the sample are in TAB. 1.

The TAB. 1 showed the AM1R sample presents a value of NNP in the range of uncertainty
about the potential to generate acidity. On the other hand, the value of the NPR classified as
potentially generating acidity. For AM2E sample, the value of NNP points to the range that
classifies it as potentially neutralizing. However, NPR value is found within the uncertainty
zone. Figure 1A and 1B showed that the two samples were similar phases.

These minerals are characteristic of rocks and soils that make up the sulfide gold ore coming
from MG. The presence of pyrite in these two samples is indicative that this material presents

3. the potential to form acid drainage. In contrast, the presence of carbonates, calcite in AM1R
and calcite and ankerite in AM2E may contribute to the natural neutralization of the acidity.
As verified in Tab. 2, the main minerals of the samples are quartz and muscovite. Carbonates
have been found in proportions greater than 7 wt% for both samples. However the siderite
does not contribute to the neutralization of generated acid and was found in AM1R. Pyrite
was found in low concentrations, about 1 wt%. The AM2E sample showed higher
concentration of carbonates calcite and ankerite.

The quality index refinement of the samples AM1R were X2
=3,7; Rwp = 6,8; RBragg = 2,9 and
for AM2E were X2
= 4,3; Rwp = 7,5; RBragg = 3,8, indicating that the refinements were
performed properly to enable reliable analysis of crystal structures.
Conclusions
Applying the technique of XRD associated with Rietveld method was essential to know the
mineralogy of the material, which compared with the results of static tests allowed to evaluate
the potential formation of AMD, providing grants for actions to prevent possible
environmental damage.
