ABRAHAM MASLOW
MASLOW’S HIERARCHY OF NEEDS
His hierarchy of needs focuses on the stages of the
growth in humans. Maslow use the terms
Physiological, Safety, Belongingness and
Love, Esteem, and Self-Actualization needs to
describe the pattern that human motivations move
through.
The pyramid represents the lowest stage being the
most fundamental with the basic needs up to the
most highest being self actualization and aiming for
the top. Maslow's theory suggests that the most basic
level of needs must be met before the individual will
strongly desire the higher level needs.
PHYSIOLOGICAL NEEDS
These are the requirements for survival. The body
would not be able to function without them.
Animals, including humans all need air, food and water
as well as shelter is necessary to survive. Sex is also
involved with a normal requirement as it seen as a
necessity like breathing or eating.

Safety needs
This level is most likely to be found in
children because they need to feel safe.
Safety and Security needs include:
Personal security
Financial security
Health and well-being
Safety net against accidents/illness and their adverse impacts

LOVE AND BELONGING
The third layer of the pyramid is interpersonal.
Deficiencies (neglect etc) can impact individual's
ability to form and maintain emotionally significant
relationships in general, like: friendship, family and
intimacy. Humans want to feel accepted and feel like
they belong. It could be from a culture, social group or
even religious groups. Humans feel the need to love
whether this be sexually or non sexually. Although if
these are not found, illnesses such as depression or
loneliness can impact on the strength of a person. An
anorexic will ignore the fact that they do need to eat
lacking all sense of control and belonging.
ESTEEM
The next stage is having self esteem, respecting
yourself and others. Feeling self valued can be from
an interest or hobby as it will also be an achievement.
This is on a higher level to esteem because they are
independent and strong headed. The lower level
would be seeking fame, attention or status. If
someone however fails to not have self esteem, they
want to seek for the respect from others. If a human
cannot accept themselves for who they are, it is
difficult to reach the ability to be confident within the
world and yourself.
SELF ACTUALIZATION
The top of the pyramid is self actualization. This is
when an individual has realized their own potential. A
person can now identify what they are capable of
becoming. Other people’s desires vary as some want
to raise a family whereas others have career driven
potentials. You must be able to reach all the other
needs before reaching self actualization.
Morality, creativity, spontaneity, problem solving, lack
of prejudice and acceptance of facts.
