Enhancing and Restoring Safety & Quality Cultures - Dave Litwiller - May 2024...
Evaluation Activity 1
1. Evaluation question 1
In what ways does your media product
use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
(i.e. of film openings)
2. Screen shot 1
The beginning of our opening sequence starts with a close up of a characters
legs entering a dark room. This creates mystery of who he is and where is he
going.
The titles that were used in
this scene is blended into the
concrete floor. With a very
bold font, this goes well with
our sequence as it is a
thriller and they are hard
and fast paced films.
From what we can see of the character, they are wearing all black which can show that
they are a very dark and careless person. Being a thriller this could mean that the
character could turn violent or do something very careless.
When we was
filming this shot
we made sure
that there was
very little light
coming into the
room and you
couldn't’t see
anything except
the characters
legs. This
enphasises the
character and
also creates
mystery as to
who he is.
3. Screen shot 2
The beginning of our opening sequence is not where a typical thriller would be as
they are usually in a city. However because it is a abandoned dark room it still gives it
a mysterious feel.
The title on this shot is
blended into the wall
and made to look like it
is stood up on the table
this is so you can still see
what is going on.
However is has been
animated to make it look
more professional.
The lighting and colour of this
shot is similar to the first one as
it is trying to emphasise the
mysterious character and run
down room of which he
operation from.
We decided to have a midshot of the table where you
can only the torso of the character keeping his face out
of the scenes to create the enigma codes.
4. Screen shot 3
We chose not to put a title
on this scene as we didn’t
want to risk the viewer
getting distracted. As it
plays a very big part of
building up the sequence.
It is common in thrillers to not show the villains face. Either at all or at the
very end this is because it keeps the audience guessing and creates enigma
codes. We chose not to show the face because he is a dark character meaning
that it becomes tense when he put the bomb in the bag and his identity
remains hidden.
The foley sound in this
shot is the male
zipping up the bag.
This is supported with
a classical soundtrack
which is used in a lot
of thrillers. Together
they work well and
crated enigma codes
such as ‘what is he
going to do with the
bomb‘
Lighting staying very low key with a little ray of light
beaming on the bomb. This gives the audience a clue as to
what is going to happen and tells them that the character
is very dangerous.
5. Screen shot 4
A close up of the villains face (still hidden). Used by many thriller films
close up show that the character is very dominant and is going to be
involved in the conflict as they are powerful.
This shot was used
to not only show
the characters
power but to also
keep the audience
interested as they
are looking at the
person that is going
to do something
devastating but
they don’t quite
know who it is.
The sound track then
stops when he is
looking at the screen
this makes the scene
tense and supports
the character being
mysterious and
eerie. As he is
looking straight at
you is also suggests
that he not scared of
confrontation.
The male is still wearing all black suggesting
that he is secretive and is hiding something.
6. Screen shot 5
In this shot is shows the character travelling by train towards London. As
big cities are where thrillers are based this fits in with the genre. And
also shows the area he is going to place the bomb.
The POV shot of the
character travelling to
London suggests that
he just a normal
person. And hasn’t got
any higher authority
than anyone else just a
plan of destroying
something big.
The foley sounds that
were used in this shot
was the train going
along the tracks and
conversations in the
background as it is rush
hour and the train is
busy.
The location that he is travelling through looks quite run
down and dirty, suggesting he lives on the outskirts of
London and is heading there for a bigger impact.
7. Screen shot 6
We used a establishing shot to show the area of London where
the male character is planning his attack. This is a good area
fore him as it is a very crowded place.
We shot this as a POV
at an high angle to
represent the power he
has over London. The
dark lighting to the
right of the shot where
the terrorist is standing
represents his dark
persona that is
spreading over London,
it also foreshadows the
horror of the upcoming
events.
The title is blended
into the sky on this
clip to not only make
it look more
professional but so it
doesn’t take to much
attention away from
the shot.
8. Screen shot 7
The shard represents the power and wealth that is associated with London, this is
shown through the phallic imagery of the building, as masculinity provides power.
Which is what the terrorist wants to destabilize.
The title animated to
go up the building was
used to emphasize
how powerful the
building really is.
However is was also
blended into the sky to
not only look more
professional but to not
take to much attention
away from the shard.
This is a suitable
location for our
thriller as most
thrillers are
based in big
cities, where it is
very busy.
9. Screen shot 8
This is a medium shot of the male character walking towards the shard. Still in
black with his identity still hidden. This creates enigma codes such as who is that
male attacking the building.
The soundtrack this
point start to slow
down with a sound
of a clock becoming
louder as he gets
closer. This creates
suspense and
tension for the
audience as they
know what is about
to happen.
The title in this shot is blended into the ground because
thrillers are usually associated with being hard and fast
paced so this font and placement supports that.
10. Screen shot 9
The final POV shot of him walking towards
the building indicates that there is about to
be some conflict.
The soundtrack is hardly playing this point
with the clock ticking even harder and faster.
By doing this it builds tension and prepares
the audience for what is about to happen.
The lighting is
very dark as the
character walks
towards the
shard doors. This
shows that he is
a careless person
and attacking it
because of a
personal issue.
Going back through our opening sequence it has it similarities with all the
others as it is set in a big city and the villains identity remains hidden
through the whole of it. This will keep the audience interested and keen to
watch the whole film.
